Beer With A Purpose
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A beer meetup that feeds people sounds like a feel-good slogan, until you hear how it’s actually being run. We’re joined by Paul, who helped launch the Michigan chapter of Beer Drinkers of America, and he lays out a simple, surprisingly effective model: pick a slow night at a local bar or brewery, bring in a crowd that wouldn’t have been there, and have the venue donate a portion of that extra revenue directly to a local food pantry. No complicated fundraising, no passing the hat, just community showing up and letting the math do the work.
We talk through what he learned while volunteering, including the difference between a food bank and a food pantry, and why food insecurity is closer than many of us want to admit. Then we get into the practical details people actually care about: what membership costs, what’s expected of members, and where the next meetup is happening. If you love local taprooms, want to support restaurants that are trying to survive, and also want your happy hour to do something real, this is a blueprint you can copy.
And yes, we drink. Paul brings a perfect warm-weather curveball, the “Spaghett” beer cocktail (light lager, Campari, citrus), and we rate it live. From there we bounce into craft beer highs and closures, special bottle shares, and even a whiskey nerd detour into infinity bottles and budget bourbons that overdeliver.
Subscribe for more, share this with a friend who loves beer with a story, and leave a review with your go-to “drink for a cause” idea so we can try it.

Welcome Drinks And Job Quitting Jokes
August GitshlagGod's fucking diagnosis. Who's the other guy?
Jamie FlanaganIt's the machine, I think.
SPEAKER_00I said hey!
unknownHey!
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the Man Cave Happy Hour. I said hey! Hey! Welcome to the Man Cave Happy Hour. We're gonna drink a fine whiskey and smoke a really fine cigar.
Jamie FlanaganIt is time for Happy Hour. It is the Man Cave Happy Hour. Whiskey, cigars, spirits, the stories that go along with it. I'm Jamie Flanagan.
August GitshlagYes, he is, and that over there is August Kitchlag. It's so nice to stare across the table at your sexy face again, Matt Fox. Don't don't it's been a week.
Matt FoxDon't threaten me with a good time.
August GitshlagWow, too late. Yeah, baby.
Jamie FlanaganWe're drinking beer, baby. Yes, we are.
August GitshlagNot the conventional Man Cave happy hour. Well, we we're not actually drinking beer right now. We're drinking our welcome pocket.
Jamie FlanaganWe will still, yeah. But yeah, beer is on the agenda today. Beer is on the agenda. We got a bunch of quitters in the building. Barry's quitting his job. I'm quitting my job. That's right.
August Gitshlag12 days. 12 days for you, buddy.
Jamie FlanaganThey both like no, don't quit. Don't quit. Don't quit.
August GitshlagOh my god.
SPEAKER_03Don't quit quitting. A bunch of know-it-alls. Son of a bitch.
August GitshlagMan, I've are you jealous? I am. I'm I'm gonna retire once. I sat down with my financial planner, yeah, which uh is a hamster, and uh it told me that uh I can retire when I'm 80 for about three weeks.
SPEAKER_01Okay, well, there you go.
Matt FoxWelcome to Walmart.
August GitshlagAnd there you go. Yep, that's it. We have we have we have we have guests. Yeah, yeah, we do, we do. And it's it's rare that we have we I don't think we've ever had beer guests in here. We've had cider guests, we've had Diddy a couple times, yeah, had him in last week.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, but uh we did uh we did we were at we did meet we were at the very racist founders downtown. Oh hey, oh they got too soon they got too soon.
August GitshlagOh, I think we do have a certified beer nerd in Barry Mulsa, who is a gold medal winning beer maker.
Matt FoxI'm so excited to hear about what your next step is after these next two weeks, Barry.
Jamie FlanaganUh is it one of twelve? Unlikely.
August GitshlagThat's not the two weeks' notice he put in. That's my Twitters.
Matt FoxSo let me ask you a question, August. When you hold a Stein, how are you supposed to hold a Stein in your hand? Is there a certain etiquette that has to be done when holding a beer stein?
August GitshlagWhy are you asking me that? Because my name's August Gitchlag. Yeah. So you're just assuming that I know how to hold a fucking beer sign because I'm trying to do it.
Jamie FlanaganI'm making an hour out of you and me here. How are things up there in Frankenmooth, by the way? I have not checked in yet this year.
SPEAKER_06I need to go make my uh next weekend chicken dinners and beer stein. I gotta go.
August GitshlagThere's no way to hold a beer stein, however, you get the fluid to your mouth, unless Barry can prove me wrong.
SPEAKER_06Well, I think he's referring to the contest that you officiated at the Frutling Center.
August GitshlagOh, I don't think he's doing that either. Is that what you're talking about? The holding sale?
SPEAKER_06I think you might be.
August GitshlagOkay. I'm trying to segue.
Matt FoxI'm trying to segue.
August GitshlagHe almost won it here. Paul next to me, who I met during the dragon. I alright. I caught the I get it. You should have this is why we don't show prep, right?
SPEAKER_05You talked about it when you were getting your hat from the parking lot.
August GitshlagThanks for letting me in on it.
Matt FoxAppreciate it. Anyway. But who before we get into our our amazing guest, Paul. Paul. Hey, Paul. Hey, hi, welcome to the main. Hello. Jamie, who are we brought to you by?
Sponsors And Sharing The Show
Jamie FlanaganThat's right. You know, Paul, this wouldn't happen without our dear and kind sponsor.
August GitshlagIt would absolutely still happen.
Jamie FlanaganOur dear and kind sponsors. Today it's today, brought to you by uh WearingFunny.com. Yeah, wearing funny. It's uh great place to get the fun and funny rock and roll, amusing t-shirts.
August GitshlagStuff and things.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, stuffing things. Yeah, yeah. So, and then of course you could pick up your Man Cave Happy Hour t-shirt there. Yep. We got a nice little baseball jersey. Someone gifted me with that, didn't you, Mr. Flanagan? Yeah, I did. I did. It was lovely. The beer on the penguins t-shirts. Yeah.
Matt FoxBeers on the penguins.
Jamie FlanaganBeers on the penguins. And uh no, actually, the best-selling shirt was Todd's, the Todd's bar shirt. Yeah. And it was that was like during the pandemic. And we actually donated the proceeds to a local bartender who wasn't bartending because of the pandemic. So right, okay. So all the proceeds from those shirts went to a couple local bartenders. That was cool. And naturally, you can pick up your my Irish radio t-shirts on there, brought to you by Jesus Flat again with your Irish radio shit.
SPEAKER_02You gotta bring it up all the time. Irish Irish Irish radio. I love that hepts you got in you now, son. How many?
Jamie FlanaganNo, no.
SPEAKER_02How much Jameson you burping?
Jamie FlanaganMan, those Germans get creepy, don't they? I'm glad that there's Vedo World. Come on. There's foam right there.
SPEAKER_06How much Jameson are you burping?
Jamie FlanaganBut my Irish radio just started a show, and a guy from Dublin started a show. There's a guy in Australia just joined us this week as well. A real Australian Irishman? Uh-huh. Uh-yeah. Look at that. Yep, yep, yep. An export stuff.
August GitshlagYou're up your hair at like 3-4 in the morning, firing the audacity up for that one.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. No, it's all automated. So, but so yeah, so that's uh brought to you and uh and brought to you by uh everybody who listens and and shares and likes. The best thing you can do too.
August GitshlagWe do this for both of you.
Jamie FlanaganTell a friend. I know. Yeah, mom.
August GitshlagAnd they're listening, too. Thanks, mom.
Jamie FlanaganUh I tried, my mom wanted to watch, and I'm like, well, A, you really don't want to, and B, I don't know. We swear a lot. I can get it on for you, but uh you'll never see it again.
August GitshlagYeah, I always get nervous when I speak and just like pop in there watching, oh mom, guys.
Matt FoxYour mom says, You guys were talking about this one thing and someone said the F word. I mean, fuck.
August GitshlagI'll just get a text message that says August Robert.
SPEAKER_06Times do you need to say the F word. Before you get banned, several. I don't know.
August GitshlagNo, the only thing that gets us banned is talking about uh guys doing amazing charity work for sex traffic workers that have been saved and built houses for them. And they threw us off for talking about sex trafficking.
Jamie FlanaganAnd now we're on the now we're on the the the highly watched list and we get banned like every other week.
August GitshlagSo we're gonna get in trouble for that. We'll have to clip that, you know, just mute me there.
Jamie FlanaganRight. So but uh beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer. I went to Cuba Burp, I didn't have one. Yeah, it's uh beer drinkers of America. That's a thing. Yeah, I but he first told me about them like this. Is easy make if this is is this real? Is this a Facebook group? Um, yeah, no, it's a thing. It's uh yeah, it's uh it's it's it's uh the people who can't make it into Comic Con.
August GitshlagI don't know. But if they tried, they could. They probably just haven't tried.
Jamie FlanaganI'm sure they could. But Paul, there's uh you you helped launch the uh the Michigan chapter. Uh it started someplace else. I don't know if it was Texas in California or Oregon, Oregon.
SPEAKER_05It's a national organiz or organization, they have thousands of members. Yeah, you might have been fed all the information on the social media feeds and all that stuff. And I was getting attacked by all those ads for a while.
Jamie FlanaganOkay, slide that to the edge of the table. That way you don't have to lean in as much. There you go. And then when you're fine, now don't think about it again. You're you're fine.
Matt FoxWhat are you doing letting him talk? I well, I just I'm getting there. I'm getting there, Paul. Yes, before we uh I because I I'm really excited about what what you brought and what you're gonna have us try tonight. Sure. But Jamie has a really, really important question for you.
Jamie FlanaganI totally forgot. Yeah, I can see that. This is the most important question of the entire I was moving down the road because we want to know about the inception of the the the beer drinkers of America.
August GitshlagThe inception without hearing about the conception, and then yeah, and then how the Michigan started.
Jamie FlanaganI hope he gets a good reception. But Paul, before we get to all of that, and I'm so glad I got a welcome cocktail because it's taking way too fucking off.
Paul’s Beer Origin Story
Jamie FlanaganPaul, tell me about your childhood.
SPEAKER_05Well, I'll tell you what, we've got two teachers in the room, right? So but maybe retiring, I just found out each of you. Okay, so he's already retired, he's working for the clerk's office and quit that job, yeah. So I have a brother who is a professor at Case Western Reserve. My daughter is a fourth grade teacher, and my mom was uh was an English teacher. All right, so I'm teaching in the family, and then then all of a sudden, uh the next thing part of my childhood was uh beer. I found out about beer, and uh that's my whole life. And how old were you when you found out about beer? Probably about four or five, and you know, you drink the head off my dad's beer, and it was fantastic. I love the foam, it was fantastic. Yeah, you would do a little barbecue in the backyard, pour a Miller Light or whatever it might have been, and you drink the foam off. And I kind of fell in love with the culture. My first beer was Budweiser from my granddad.
August GitshlagThere you go. Absolutely. Yeah, pretty sure mine was an Altus or a Gobel or Jobel, something like that.
Matt FoxI can tell you my daughter's first beer was a Heineken.
August GitshlagBougie little brat.
SPEAKER_03I had a Mickey's wide mouth.
August GitshlagOh, and he went back to beer after that? Wow, that was bad stuff. But nobody said schlit, which they just stopped brewing, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Well, they started directed 63 recipe there for a while.
SPEAKER_05It was really good when they did that. It was great again. Yeah, I think they're gonna bring it back. It's like Twinkies. Remember, Twinkies went away, and everybody got all upset, and the media was complaining, and you couldn't get it, and then all of a sudden, six months later, you got it. So that's gonna be schlitz.
Matt FoxBut they don't last as long as they used to. Do any of us?
August GitshlagMy belt, my belt says that too. Yeah, there's a pill for that, Jamie.
SPEAKER_01Oh, we'll let that new sponsor.
August GitshlagOh what what uh what part of town are you from, Paul, originally?
SPEAKER_05So I grew up in Northville and uh Brighton area, so Livingston County is where I really spent most of my time. Folks are still performative years in Livingston County. I'm I'm an adopted eastsider now, so living in Shelby Township.
August GitshlagAnd I think I barely consider that east side.
SPEAKER_05Oh barely the northern.
Jamie FlanaganThat's like that's that's the quagmire. I just call it the quagmire. That has to be a good idea.
August GitshlagYeah, I call it Copper Top Township.
SPEAKER_05What's the official east side? Isn't that just east of Woodworth?
August GitshlagYeah, but you're so far north that I don't know if it counts as east side. So I'm up north. You're just in Coppertop County.
Matt FoxYou're in Shelby, Rochester, it all kind of mingles itself.
SPEAKER_01Easy speedy.
Matt FoxI know I'm on east.
SPEAKER_05None of my neighbors will drive more than a mile for a restaurant. So that's actually an outside.
August GitshlagThat's a McCombe County thing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's yeah.
Jamie FlanaganI love McCombe County. Like uh, because I grew up at Seven and Van Dyke and then lived in St. Clair Shores, and just as a restaurant's around, I'm we go back to that side of town just because all of our favorite places are and we hate everything.
August GitshlagYeah, I'm I'm as a ham tramic guy. I spend and growing up in St. Detroit and St. Clair Shores. I spend all my time over in the Gross Points and all the east side restaurants and everything. Yeah, went to Coriander Kitchen a couple weeks ago. You been in there yet? No. Take the lady. Oh, yeah? It is lovely. It's on the canal, that hidden canal neighborhood in Detroit over there off Alter Road. Yeah, yeah. It's down there, and it's like there's boarded up houses on the water. It's a bizarre little neighborhood in Detroit. And it's like then there's a there's a beautiful house, and there's a whole bunch of cheesy ones.
Matt FoxWhat's it called? Coriander? Coriander Kitchen.
August GitshlagIt's right there on the canals, and there's like a canoe and kayak rental place next to it. It's open air, it's uh it's a gorgeous place. The ladies love it.
SPEAKER_05It's like a stones throw from Gross Point, right? Yeah, it's basically on the border.
August GitshlagIt's next to the border street. Yeah, all right, yeah, right over down there by the Ashland bump.
SPEAKER_05We used to jump as kids. Yeah, I was looking at the menu yesterday and it looked really good. I mean, they had some very maybe eclectic or something. Yeah, it is.
August GitshlagIt is eclectic. I I enjoyed it, and it's the yeah, the ladies love it, girls adore it. Okay, I mean, even the ones that don't call me back, like the way that arrive at a show. The reason why I'm in, I don't know. So let's go, cuz why didn't you guys pick that up? You're supposed to pick that up, Matt. You're looking at me like you're doing the next lyric. I'm just I I'm floored.
Early Michigan Craft Beer Memories
August GitshlagI'm totally floored. Just a fever dream.
SPEAKER_05Anyway, so beer triggers of America, you found out when you're four years old, right? Yeah, so fell in love with beer. I went through the whole journey. I am very young, but I was at the beginning of the beer culture that took over in America, right? So I was watching, you know, the Michael Jackson television show, not Michael Jackson the singer, with the movie out, but Michael Jackson, the beer writer out of the UK. He had a show on the BBC. I didn't know that. I did not. Yeah, I was just thinking straight up Moonwalk. Unbelievable. What does that glove?
Jamie FlanaganHow did the beer to Moonraker hilarious?
SPEAKER_05I he he explained the world of beer to me and and how fascinating it was. Okay. Then all the breweries started opening up. I remember driving out to Grand, I'm sorry, Kalmazou back when Bells was independent, very small. It was called the eccentric cafe because I'd go out there, my I had Miata, and I would load up the trunk with beer because that was the only way to get it. Yeah, it was it was two cases. I would load it up.
August GitshlagYou couldn't fit uh golf clubs in the back of that thing, could you? Uh I could. A driver could. That was like the limit. Yeah, that was the limit, but nothing else. The Corvette rule is you have to be able to put one set of golf clubs in the back. Couldn't put my golf shoes in the back there, just the colors. I just wear the shoes. It's like GM executive rule. Like no one's gonna buy that unless you can put a golf club in them.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so smart. So is that all the exciting times in Michigan with all the breweries that were opening? But everybody forgets there was a time when we only had like three or four, and you'd have to drive up to Frankenmouth, the the original brewery that uh microbrewing that was.
August GitshlagUh new people took it over. Uh, number one in the city was traffic jam and snug, right?
SPEAKER_05I missed that number one. They they did, and there was some kind of controversy around it because the laws were being written as things were going along. So I don't think they were able to brew on premise, and that's how Motor City came across the street, if I'm remembering this correctly. But then they started, then they changed the rules and then they started brewing it. Yeah, they started brewing over there. They hate each other, but they would make the cheese there and they would use the same equipment to make the beer. It was really interesting.
Jamie FlanaganLilies and Royal Oak, don't they do some brewing in house? I don't know if they still do. They do, they do, but do they do beer? Do they do beer? Yeah, okay. That's what I thought. So I think they're even older schooler than that. Lily's been doing it, crap. They've been doing it for a very long time. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Traffic jam, I think, was number one.
August GitshlagThe traffic light had a traffic jam. That's a traffic light. That's the that's the Selfridge Air Force Base titty bar.
Matt FoxTraffic light. Right off of Grashet.
August GitshlagOkay, that's kept it. All right, I'm back on traffic.
Matt FoxNever heard of it. I'm back.
SPEAKER_06I'm back.
August GitshlagFree pizza on Mondays back when it was open. Not that I know anything about that.
Matt FoxYeah, be careful, be careful with that pepperoni. Pizza and a slice.
SPEAKER_01Oh boy. Anyway.
Jamie FlanaganSo yeah. So you were just enamored with the the different bars and different things.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I really got into the culture of it. I was homebrewing before the internet, which was very challenging. There were very few places. Oh, so was Barry back in the 70s.
SPEAKER_06Oh, he's gonna die tonight.
August GitshlagDid you homebrew? Did you homebrew back in the 70s? Really? No. No. But he's a gold medal winning brewery.
SPEAKER_06Two years old, 14 maybe. Okay.
SPEAKER_05But you were brewing before the internet as well.
SPEAKER_06Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So what was the book? It was uh relax, have a homebrew, was the little riff. There you go. That guy was awesome. That was the book that got me into it. Yeah, I still have the book. It's all dog eared and torn apart and everything.
August GitshlagFor sure, yeah, yeah. That's not my fault. Probably cigarette smoke, too, from back in the day. Oh, yeah. I was never a smoker. Oh, I just assumed it was you were that of a of an era. Jesus Christ. You are gonna die tonight. We all are of that era when we're when we're smoking in the 90s and 80s like crazy.
SPEAKER_06I can see the tears on Ellen's cheeks now.
August GitshlagThat'll be my mom's name.
SPEAKER_05But the camaraderie about the whole thing, I'm gonna keep this train going. So I I put together a list, I think it's like 75. It's really kind of sad. There's so many breweries that are doing well and kicking butt around here, and they're doing a great job. But I've got a list like 74 in Michigan that have shut down. Oh, yeah. Wow. There's probably more that I'm not thinking of. So that's kind of what this these ideas
Beer Drinkers Of America With A Mission
SPEAKER_05were kicking around. There's this national organization for beer drinkers of America.
Jamie FlanaganRight, right.
SPEAKER_05And what they wanted to do is, you know, you get a dollar off your beer and you have camaraderie and you hang out. Nice. I'm in all kinds of organizations. I got a lot of things going on. I like people, I'm a people person. I don't know if I need another organization to join. And it's, you know, I I want to get my dollar discount. But do I really need that dollar? Yeah, yeah. I was thinking all these people that are kind of struggling. I I volunteer at a uh local food pantry and I I learned about I started doing that in January. My wife and I do it, and we have a lot of fun doing it. I like the dignity that they treat people with. Oh nice. I thought it was fantastic, and I was kind of foolish. I didn't think, well, a pantry, you know, they just it they don't have they don't need money, they need a lot of money, right?
August GitshlagThey get they get I'm on the board of directors of the Detroit Friendship House in Hand Tramic. We need to talk a lot more about we just did our budget and we just did our we're doing we're negotiating our lease right now, and it's it's tough out there for people providing services. Exactly.
SPEAKER_05I didn't know the difference between a food pantry and a food bank. You I'm sure you know this, August, but this is all new to me. And then I saw so I saw a need in my local community. I found out there's 90,000 people in my county, McComb County, that have food insecurity issues. So I thought I I reached out to the national organization. I said, Hey, instead of getting a dollar off my beer or you know, half off chicken wings when we get together, what if I talked to the restaurants, the friends that I have in the restaurant business, the brewery business, the tap rooms that I love so much? And on their slow nights, if I could pack the house with three, four, five dozen people that wouldn't have been there, maybe there'd be six or twelve. Yeah, yeah. Would would you be interested in us doing that and helping out that portion of the community? And then also, if we pack the house, maybe a percentage of those earnings, the revenue that we bring in, that extra revenue, right, right. Would they cut a check directly to the food pantry? I don't want to touch the money. Right. And everybody I talked to said yes.
Matt FoxThat's a tax that's a tax write off. They get to glory, yeah.
SPEAKER_05They get to advertise that they're helping out the community, they get to put it on their dollar value. If there's a tax incentive or advantage they get, wonderful. Let them have it. Everybody wins. And you know what we do? We just show up, have a beer, have a couple of beers, is it a dollar more than it would have been?
Jamie FlanaganHey, I can live with it.
SPEAKER_05And we're not, they don't mark it up at the same price. So if they're having a special, then you would have gotten exactly.
August GitshlagYeah, we're paying the full normal fair. Yeah, I love that. Full frame.
SPEAKER_05I love that. Yeah. We had our third meeting. So uh we've been doing this a few times. We went to Hamlin Pub, we just met and did which of the 40 of them.
Jamie FlanaganOh yeah, yeah. So this is kind of mute.
SPEAKER_05If you've only had three meetings, this is kind of a this is so the national organization's been going on, I think about a year and a half. Oh, it's that new.
August GitshlagThe whole thing is that new. Yeah, it's like when you mentioned someone had to have been doing this for some at some point. But yeah, that's it's in so many ways, man. So you're basically a training.
SPEAKER_05Maybe you're doing it on your own.
August GitshlagYeah, well, that's got all we do. It is a support group for everybody that you know hates their job. It's called the bar. We meet there after work. Yeah, it's therapy. Yeah, it's therapy.
SPEAKER_05So, no, it's it's it's this chapter is only had three monthly meetings now. So we stuck we all got together at Hamlin. It was the to answer the question, it was 25 at Van Dyke. And it was so successful, we had a few dozen people there. One of the owners said, Hey, I heard this sounds really cool. I'll cut a check tonight based on the revenue. Wow, there you go. And then we're like, this is gonna work. Okay, we went to Sherwood next, and Ray and Lisa, the owners of Sherwood, they gave up very yeah, great people, and they are they've got a long history of helping out the community too. They're always doing things for the for the community, but they caught a very generous check when we came in. It's in Shelby, right? Shelby Township. Is it technically Shelby Township? It's uh Hall Road and Hayes, just yeah, yeah. It's on the north of Halloween, north western corner, yeah. Right, little strip mall, homemade food.
August GitshlagYeah, because the east side of Hayes is uh McComb Township, west side is Shelby Township. I think Hayes is the is the border. Hayes is the border, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And then you got Macombs. Yeah, yeah. You need
Membership Cost And Meetup Details
SPEAKER_05a map. Yeah, yeah.
Jamie FlanaganSo three rapid bar questions, and then we're gonna start drinking. Oh I want to I want to just do one question. No, no, so do you have to go to every bloody meeting? Hang on. How much does it cost to join this darn thing? And I forgot what the third one was. Social security number? We don't need the third. Let's just drink. So, yeah, so but yeah, so do you have to go to the meetings and what's it cost to uh get involved?
SPEAKER_05All right, to get involved, you show up in a meeting and you meet us. Okay, the next meeting will be at Browniron Brew House in Washington Township. They have two locations. The owners there, they give back a lot to the community, they're fantastic people. They agreed to do this.
Matt FoxThe other the other locations were others in Royal Oak, yeah, right.
SPEAKER_05So the original Washington Township is gonna be June 8th. If you want to check us out, show up at six o'clock. Bring your friends, you like beer. I don't even care if you don't like beer. You can see we'll let you in anyways, as long as you're a cool person. Yeah, cool people only and me. No knuckleheads, no knuckleheads, no knucklehead rule. Ah, you guys are in. You just mentioned my name. So that'll be june 8th. The other way is there's we have a link and it's kind of long here. It might be easier. So I don't know what's the best way to do it.
Jamie FlanaganWhere do you get more information? That was my yeah.
SPEAKER_05More information is shelby.township.bdoa, beer drinkers of America, shelby.township.bdoa at gmail.com. We'll put that in the I'll answer that. We'll put it in the notes. Fantastic. I also have a direct link to a Facebook page and and the website. Yeah, we'll link all the numbers. 15 bucks. All right. Lifetime membership. Oh my god. Not do you get a card? Not month. You get a card. I collect those things. You get it, you get a card. And look at it, I put it in a lanyard. My friend Joe Naggin, who's a member, came up with this idea. He put it in a lanyard. Oh my god. So you walk around and everybody knows.
August GitshlagKnow if I want to be a member. I don't want to be a member of any kind of club that has me as a member. Excuse me, I need a beer.
SPEAKER_01We're not worthy. Excuse me.
SPEAKER_05I get a sticker. $14 goes with a national organization. One dollar goes back to a local chapter. Okay. And what do you do? What do you require of you? Nothing other than please show up at least three, four times a year. Okay. It's a monthly meeting. We're talking about doing fun events.
Jamie FlanaganThese meetings are showing up at a bar, supporting the bar that's supporting the things. The charity. That's like a no-brainer.
SPEAKER_06You don't have to like think or anything at one of these meetings.
August GitshlagWe encourage you not to think. Oh good. They're brilliant. It's like the opposite of us doing trivia net kunins.
Jamie FlanaganOh well, this is this is very, very cool. It's uh it's kind of brilliant. It's uh kind of are all the other we have 60 members now.
SPEAKER_0560 members in we've got two and 2.9 months that we did this or whatever.
August GitshlagSo the other are you now the model for the other states and cities? There's other ones that are a good looking guy, so yeah, he would be the model. I don't I don't know about this.
SPEAKER_05I have got a face for radio, and I didn't know this was on video.
August GitshlagHe's not really as intimidating as he looks in sound schools. Why is your hand on my knee? Uh because I'm getting uh well, no, the hair and makeup guys are really good here. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's why I wear a hat every time. My beer bearing's hat. Oh, I like this. Barry is a fellow beer bearing and our cadre cafe for the bowling team.
Jamie FlanaganWell, that is so that is so so cool. Can can people just donate online if they're like, I don't have time to do these meetings, I don't have time to the shenanigans.
SPEAKER_05But this sounds like we haven't figured that one out yet. What we want to do is I don't show up and throw a couple of things. We don't want our chapter to touch money, right? We want to go directly to the fund. Okay, so we're bad.
August GitshlagIt's bad having drinkers touch money. Well, trust me, I've done lots of charity events that we miscount all the time.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, what when we don't when the tap house or the brewery donates the money, they they write the check directly to the pantry. And we just we pick it up and we hand it off.
August GitshlagWhich one you uh Gleaner's Forgotten Harvest?
SPEAKER_05So it is Gleaners is the food bank. The pantry is what I should have said, right? And it's called a little thing here.
August GitshlagThere's no serve local. There's no pantry without the bank. You got to have both. Yeah. So it's a gleaner's serve local.
SPEAKER_05It's called Serve Local. And we do it at uh uh it's DeQuinder, just north of M59, and uh they go monthly. They started out, I guess, about 10 years ago. I've only doing this since January, yeah, but they used to go door to door, and now they have a stationary pantry as well. Okay, good, good, good.
Jamie FlanaganFrazier, they would if uh we uh we're uh uh used to be a depot for people to come get boxes of food, I don't know, quarterly, monthly. I don't know, there'd be at the high school. It's amazing, you know, because it's not it's not a poor neighborhood or anything, whatever. And then but there's cars like line up, and you're like, man, people are really in need, and you don't think about it. Seniors unlimited income, but you know you don't think you don't think about it, and it's like, man, all these people lined up to get these boxes, and it's like I'm glad the boxes are here for them, and I'm glad you know they're we the challenges in Ham Tramic are you know the all the ethnic lines and it's like all the landscape.
August GitshlagYou know, the the the wives are going to the food pantry and the husbands don't know it because they want to, you know, they think they're just keeping things going, and it's hello food sometimes, and yes, the there's six or seven languages served down there. I mean, we we do a lot down there. Now we're doing ESL classes and nutrition classes and other things. So that's what these food banks and the pantries. I mean, they can expand it's other ways of getting money in the door, is to do those questions. I wasn't trying to cut you off. Yeah, I know.
Jamie FlanaganI'm talking about food stuff instead of questions, but I just wanted to start getting the beer. So let's crack a beer and keep talking about it. So what you brought a little bag of tricks, right? I did because so you're a big beer aficionado. So these bars aren't all like super I think he likes beer a hundred you know, things deep.
SPEAKER_05Beer is a society. I mean, the the oldest recipe that we know of is for beer. It's thought that the reason that people started farming instead of gather uh hunting and gathering is be to bring to make grain for beer, grow beer grain for beer.
August GitshlagI like that theory. It doesn't seem to crack much historical sense, but I like a beer dumbling because I mean the grape part I can see to be nutritive, not to get you.
The Spaghett Beer Cocktail Taste Test
SPEAKER_05So there, you guys are into cocktails, is my understanding, and I know we're we're kind of shifting to beer, but there's something called a spaghetti. Have you had a spaghetti before?
August GitshlagI I have not, and I'm looking, I've I've always shied away from beer cocktails, but I think you're gonna show you.
SPEAKER_05This is a beer cocktail, but this might be the perfect beer. Oh, I've got it on. Train professionals, I guess lucky land you're I got this in Cologne, Cologne, Germany, where I was drinking Kolsch beer. If you want to know where it is, here's the uh GPS coordinates on my Swiss Army knife as well as the cityscape. That's what it looks like. That's what my friend Mike uh so um what a what this drink is, it's very simple. So beer drinkers were simple people, we don't like to do difficult things. Oh wow, we got some neat stuff over here. You take a simple lager, usually in Italian, so here's a peroni, nothing special.
August GitshlagVery light and very I'm seeing more and more peroni around it these days, especially their NA. Ah, there's a lot of good NA beers. Apparently their NA is the best of the NA's. Yeah, just pour it out some bottles.
SPEAKER_05Okay, all right. So the way it normally works is you take a bottle of this light lager, take a little sip, make a little room, make a little room for it. You take your compari, the bitter, good stuff in there.
August GitshlagWe're gonna write it in your rose in the uh corona, like back in the old days.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, exactly. And you just pour a little bit in there.
unknownHuh.
August GitshlagAll right, can we do can we break this into a tasting uh level there? You want to help me out here? Just keep pouring. Okay, all right.
Matt FoxThat is so it's Peroni and Kampari.
Jamie FlanaganI was really hoping for the backwash one. I was really looking for the backwash one. I was like, give me give me a little backwash. Here you go. Okay. I was in. I was in. I thought you were just gonna pour that in the cups. I was totally out.
SPEAKER_05Let's see, it's kind of a beverage to go.
August GitshlagIf you really want to be if you want to be fancy, we'll have to open another one because we got five of us here.
Matt FoxSo you need a knife?
August GitshlagI got opening. You have a knife?
Matt FoxOh, yeah, no, that's not a knife.
Jamie FlanaganThis is a professional. That's a knife. Yeah, oh yeah, I got we got cutting boards and opening these.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna finish that. I'm gonna finish that. Okay.
August GitshlagI'm gonna finish. We got all this stuff to try here, Paul. We got stuff and things. So, so Algus, how did how did you and Paul meet? We met at the uh the spring festival at Koonin's. He was you were really impressed. Yes, that's why I like this guy can talk.
unknownWe're gonna put him on the podcast.
August GitshlagHe likes to talk. Bullet points and highlighting. He came somewhat prepared here. It's amazing.
SPEAKER_05I'm like a grown-up almost. Yeah, it almost disqualifies you from this. I like how I was holding up a Swiss Simon knife earlier, and you guys asked me if I had a knife.
August GitshlagThat's not a knife. This is a knife. So, guys, I gotta that's an opener. It's not a knife. It's a multi-tool. Did you reach that, Bristol? Yeah, I get it. You get that? There's yours there. Guys, I'm in pain. From what? I don't know. I woke up Friday afternoon. Our sports team's letting in. Friday morning, and my foot was killing me inside of my left foot, right in the behind the ball of my foot. So I'm like, what's going on? God damn it. And then Saturday at the bartend, so I'm icing it all day. I'm getting on it. Cat's like, you have gout. I'm like, don't even say that G word around me anywhere. All right, don't say it. You want the gout? So Sunday, I I woke up okay. It was okay then by Sunday afternoon, it was hurting so bad. She's like, You got gout, dude. I'm like, you know what? If I got gout, take the toe. Just take the damn toe. She's like, I'm like, you you're wishing this upon me, aren't you? Because you want me to stop drinking. You're wishing this upon me because you want me to quit drinking. She's like, I would never do that. Yeah. I want you to not, I want you to have gout so you don't drink. Like, you're a jerk. And none of that part happened, but yeah. So my foot hurts. I'm just telling you guys, my foot hurts. I know it's that in there, but I have a podiatrist appointment at nine o'clock tomorrow. It's our foot doctor. That's right. My whole point was, I'm so old, I now have a podiatrist.
Jamie FlanaganNo, I went the same thing. I thought my toe was broken. I'm like, I gotta go. And I went to my doctor for uh, you know, just uh check under the hood and uh poke in a prod, run that dipstick in there, let me know what's happening.
August GitshlagI have a sore toe and he stuck his finger up your ass. Pretty much.
SPEAKER_05I'm crying, I'm crying. Was it in the alley in a van?
August GitshlagYeah, pretty much. Hey, look, no hands. That's not an ice cream truck. That's why we keep the flamingo hotel on Gross Bec open in Frasier for a medical exam.
Jamie FlanaganSo he x-rayed my foot. Oh, that's lovely. And I was like, I don't know if I've jammed it or broke it or what. And uh, I'm like, my wife uh says it's arthritis. Your wife's probably right. So I thought you got some arthritis in my toe. I thought I broke it. Yeah, it feels like it's old. It feels like I bruised it.
August GitshlagLike I smacked it against the table or something, and then I'm like, ah, it only hurts when I'm stepping on it. Yeah, it's not any of the symptoms of gout, like my friends that have gout and earned it, how they feel. Like they say just a burning, the most searing pain they've ever had in their lives. So this is not anything like that. Not giving birth to my toenail. But uh, yeah, it hurts, it sucks. All right, see me limping, that's why.
Jamie FlanaganWhat do we have happening in our cup here?
SPEAKER_05Well, let me the pearoni. We got the pearoni. The lemons, we got the compari. You can do lemon or lime. Different people do different. A little wedge. So we are not a proper country anymore. I went to Kroger and they didn't have any lemons. I had to do the line. That's Kroger.
August GitshlagYou know this guy's an adult because he didn't put an S on the end of Kroger.
Matt FoxYeah. Nor did he say K. Roger. Well, that's my list. Yeah, that's proof that he's not a insider. That's right. He's not an insider. Absolutely.
August GitshlagYou're from Northville, yes. Yeah. Because my parents are all Krogers and Myers and four and yeah. Very Midwest. This is very Midwestern.
Matt FoxYou said the word refreshing. It's a summer drink.
August GitshlagYeah.
SPEAKER_05It's a summer drink.
August GitshlagYeah.
SPEAKER_05I could do this. There's another version that's called the beer canoe, which is this, but you then you add one more ingredient, and it is sweet vermouth.
SPEAKER_01Ah, so it's a boy, okay.
SPEAKER_05One equal parts compari and sweet vermouth, maybe about an ounce and a half each. Oh, and then maybe seven ounces of a beer. Oh, okay. Light lager.
Jamie FlanaganAll right, all right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Not not one and a half, one and a half, one and a half. Yeah, oh my god. One and a half, one and a half. Seven ounces.
Jamie FlanaganThat's a that's a one and a half is a that's a long road of compari. That's uh a beer groony I always thought peroni was a lot was a pilsner.
August GitshlagPiergrony? It's a lager, okay. Well, pilsners are lagers. I guess. So you're kind of in there by making definition, yes. Right.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_05No, thank you for bringing for sharing this, Paul. So do we have a winner? We do. What would you rate it on a scale of one to five? One to five. Oh, four and a half.
Matt FoxNice. Give it a 3.75. Ooh. I'm a solid 475. All right.
SPEAKER_06Uh 375 for me. All right. So everybody likes.
Matt FoxI would like everybody likes it.
Jamie FlanaganEverybody likes it.
Matt FoxI'd sit on the pier and drink on this in the sun in the sun.
Jamie FlanaganYou can do it. And if you want to, I want a beer, but uh, I get a little beard out.
August GitshlagI get a little beard out. I could see, like, uh at sitting at whiskey, you know, give me a peroni, put a little shot of campari in there and give me a lime. And they're like, what? Okay. And a lot of times people are used to the top there was a whole craze of rosing your coronas. They would put the pomegranate shit in there for the lime, and it's like no different. It's okay. You're getting you're used to putting booze in it.
Matt FoxYeah, that's why I like a corona.
SPEAKER_06What does that mean?
August GitshlagCampari is more of a complexity, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Right. Whereas the uh the the pomegranate juice is just flavoring, yeah, color.
August GitshlagSo this because there's alcohol in it, I'll allow it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and it's 24%.
August GitshlagSo I won't call it a shower, I won't call it a baby shower drink.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, not a baby. I but I would do it. It's easy enough. You can do it on your because what I'm gonna go sit on the deck and and have something, and I don't want to too many steps. Right. So this is like just uh just enough. We usually have some lemons and limes cut up and ready to go.
SPEAKER_05Simple as the best. So, what do you what about a Negroni, which is probably the most popular component. That's a little bitter, but I get it.
August GitshlagI got a friend who loses Mickey Lyons, loves her the Negronies, you know. That's her banger, you know, and it's just not that's another great summer drink. Classic. Yeah, yeah. Negroni's in Pim's cups, they're time and place. Well, that's a kinky out drink, though. Yeah, you gotta be in the spot for that. Like I only do pim particles and and uh yeah, the Ant-Man stuff when I'm down in New Orleans. It's the only time I'll drink that. New Orleans? Nollins.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, what else do we know need to know about the beer drinkers of America as we're enjoying beer findings?
SPEAKER_05You should join. And I oh, I want to circle back to the you had the question about uh donations. So we did have a few members, do they donate, and I I collected the money. We're we're working out a method where when we show up at events, when we show up at the event, we got this giant flag, we hang it up behind us, people. Oh, that's a good dollar membership code. And then we're like, well, let me tell you, and we give them the pitch, and people sign up right there. I think we had 11 sign up when we were at steampunk last week. We're at steampunk, great place.
August GitshlagPaul the owner is a wonderful guy there in downtown Utica. Downtown Utica.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, it's not Van Dyke, it's on that's off of it.
August GitshlagIt's off of that where Shamrock crazy packed uh Mexican joints, like right there. My cousins used to own the Skype. Mr. McGuell's Miguel's been a little bit. Mr. Miguel's. Yeah, there's another one in Warren that I used to go to a lot. My cousins used to own Shamrock.
Jamie FlanaganThe Shamrock right across the street there. Oh yeah? Yeah, my cousins used to own that. I didn't build a stellar band. They moved to Florida and they had like a they were, you know, had a manager remote, and you can't own a owner from out of state. They were just getting their asses and new home until they finally taken from them.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so that was before the fire.
Jamie FlanaganI was gonna say was that pre- or post-fire. That pre-yeah, that was that fire.
SPEAKER_05They were shut down.
Jamie FlanaganThey probably sold it, and that's when the uh fire happened.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, they they were out of it by then. But how do you arrange a flood?
August GitshlagYou know, it's yeah, it's tougher to pull off, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I I heard that every employee came back. They were shut down for a year for the fire for renovations, and in that in the food service industry for people to come back, yeah. Yeah, I heard they had every employee come back. Wow. So there's a lot of teachers. Teachers love that place. Yeah, why is that? Why do the teachers congregate?
SPEAKER_06Because kids make us drink.
SPEAKER_01Well, that was that was the most very shamrock specific, but it works.
SPEAKER_06There was no thought put into that, it just came out. As he sips is yeah. That was I'm six years out now, and you still drinking? Still stings a little, yeah.
August GitshlagWell, he did get his uh shout out on Good Morning America a couple weeks ago. He did, yes. You're you're famous.
SPEAKER_06Sorry that your boy lost. We talked about that. That was a bummer. We were everybody was so excited about that. You got all that press on though. Jamie Ding rocked and rolled. It was great.
August GitshlagAnd Jamie Ding mentioned Barry Mulso on Good Morning America as one of his uh teachers that uh it wasn't it was the only teacher he mentioned.
SPEAKER_06No, he was in preface with that son of a bitch. No, it wasn't that prick or nothing.
August GitshlagHe said, uh the guy, the guy at that bar in Utica. Yeah, is that what he said? He was actually talking about who told him to watch George Stephanopoulos in the morning. Yeah, he goes, it was uh well, Barry Mulso, you know, one of my teachers. I had a lot of great teachers, but yeah, that's really cool. It was our it was fun.
SPEAKER_06Uh there was actually a little more to to the story that they didn't get to because but I always told my AP kids if you don't have time to watch the news during the week, watch the Sunday morning news shows. Okay, because they do a good recap of the week's event. And so I I'd all list them on my uh on my my syllabus, and and that was one of them was uh when George was doing uh snuff snuffle up against. And I actually did refer to him as George Snuffle Up Against on my syllabus. That's what teachers do.
August GitshlagSo that you know that happens, he has no idea it's coming, so he gets a phone call while he's driving to work. What's the pressing to drive to work? He had his hands up here doing the steering. Yeah, you know that the third arm.
SPEAKER_05That was the first time your hand was off my knee, by the way.
August GitshlagYeah, I know. I appreciate that. Yeah, so nice. Catherine's already jealous, she's probably heading over here right now, right? Right. She got a gun. What else do you have in your bag
Infinity Bottles And Affordable Bourbon Picks
August Gitshlagof tricks?
SPEAKER_05Well, you know what? So, because you are whiskey drinkers, or I was assuming that's really what the show is more of about, is I brought something, and nobody ever knows what this is, but I'll bet you guys all know what this is: an infinity bottle. Yes. All right, so I have my infinity bottle. So, for all the listeners, you know, it's you get you got your bottle, but then you start running low, and there's just a little bit in there. What do you do with it? You mix them, you pour it in there. So my infinity only has one rule. It's got to be like an American whiskey. It's it can be a corn whiskey, it can be a bourbon, certainly, which is a corn whiskey, it can be a rye, it could be any of these things, but it's got to be in that range.
August GitshlagSo none of that crown royal shit. No, no, scotch.
SPEAKER_05I love I do like scotch. My wall, my wallet does not like scotch. He does not like it.
Jamie FlanaganI can't stand scotch.
August GitshlagI don't like scotch, and I don't like uh message.
Jamie FlanaganI like scotch. Scotch doesn't like me. Bad things happen when Jamie drinks scotch. Clothes come off. No, no, no, that's tequila. Tequila, tequila. Tequila still makes your nipples come flying out. Oh, tequila makes my pants fall off.
August GitshlagBut Scotch, it's and nobody wants to see that.
SPEAKER_05There's a lot of do you all do all you guys? All you gentlemen do a infinity bottle? I do, yeah. I do go and I just Rolling Stones fans of mine's beast of bourbon. Oh, I love that.
Jamie FlanaganVery nice. Uh you made a special little label for it. I'm gonna have to.
August GitshlagI put a lot of effort.
Jamie FlanaganMatt has two like little carafts. You should do one, you know.
August GitshlagI I have a nice little you know, engraved with like a reindeer in the black forest of Germany. I should fill that little sucker with my little bits and pieces. I was doing it with a deer, you know what I mean. There's a map.
SPEAKER_06When I bought a bottle and a crack a bottle, I would do a one ounce pour out of the bottle into the entire bottle. I would have to do that because I I don't do it in the bottle. I get a little slug in the bottom of the buy it. Screw it, I'll drink it. Down it goes.
SPEAKER_05No matter what, no matter what time, no matter what's going on. I like the dedication. So I I brought a couple beers.
August GitshlagI I am my big beer share of the year is this coming weekend to go to the Indy 500 and I bring, we meet up with people from all across the world. We got Englishmen, Australians, Welsh, New Zealand. We all come together in this one corner, this one lot and drink beer together on Friday night. So I bring a lot of Kunans beer, but this time I'm bringing a whole bunch of beer from uh Portland and Seattle that doesn't get to Michigan across the Rockies often because my girlfriend's sister lives in Portland, so in Ben River, Oregon. So that's what I'm bringing over there. So I stashed a lot of that for the trip, but I did have these two. What did you brought over? This is a Burns family doppelbach. Hold that up to the camera. Hold that up to the camera. I Octane Wayne. It is your guy, isn't it?
unknownI got it.
August GitshlagThat's the opposite of a peoni. It's the opposite of a bone. Yeah, that's it.
SPEAKER_06You chew on that, I believe. Wayne Burns can squeeze more alcohol out of a grain of barley.
Matt FoxOh, you gotta get the readers on, yeah.
August GitshlagYeah, this is a barrel-aged almanac beer company, white labels, a sour blonde ale aged with in wine barrels with spices, muskrat rape grapes, muscot grapes, and dry hops with hella too blanc.
SPEAKER_01Muskrat rapes.
August GitshlagHuh? Yeah, so this we should probably do this one first, huh?
Jamie FlanaganYeah. So well, as long as we're pulling out special cans and special bottles.
August GitshlagEveryone likes big cans.
Jamie FlanaganYeah.
August GitshlagUh oh. You have paper bags or something over here, Jamie. I figured, I figured, well, if we're gonna contribute, is it our birthday?
Jamie FlanaganAnd uh no, it's it can happen anytime. So I figured I would contribute and bring something a little special.
August GitshlagOh, look at you, you're making Barry happy. I've heard about this beer. I've heard of this one. We have the PBR bourbon on the shelf over there, but you have to try that before you leave. Oh god, age for three cents.
SPEAKER_05That was the technicality, right? Because no, New Holland makes it for him, right? But wasn't that to get to be able to call it bourbon? Yeah, it has to, but the rule doesn't say how long, right?
August GitshlagSo it's three age, it says like age for nine cents. I love how clever that is. It's a scam, but a great scam. Oh, it's not a scam, they know exactly what they're doing.
Matt FoxThey knew exactly what they were doing.
August GitshlagI'm on the most overrated beer in the history of beer.
Jamie FlanaganNow that that's what that's why I brought it. Yeah, I've had this before, and yingling, right? Or ding dong, or whatever the fuck this is, right? It tastes like bourbon. So it was it was crazy. And people are like, Oh my god, yinglings in Michigan, and I'm at a bar. Do you want a yingling? And I'm like, I mean, I've been on vacation, I've had yinglings. It's fine.
SPEAKER_06No, I'm like, well, that's a barrel. People were like so excited about it. It's all about availability, you know. Just like cars back in the day. There's a gas strength in the end, there's uh wild turkey.
SPEAKER_05That's my favorite. And there's the but the bottle, the bottle strength, cast condition.
Jamie FlanaganSo, as a as a beer guy, where where do you fall with the the yin yang twins? Ying ling.
SPEAKER_05I respect it. It's the oldest brewery in America, not in North America, oldest brewery in America. So I want them to succeed.
SPEAKER_01Okay, okay, right?
SPEAKER_05But to me, it's the it's the core story. Remember coors, you couldn't get it used to be smoking the band. Smoking the band. This is smoking the band. Once we got once we got coors, nobody cared. What's the big deal?
Matt FoxThis was the forbidden fruit. Do you know the name of the mountain that's on the other one? That's on the coors bottle and can do you know the name of that mountain.
SPEAKER_05No, but I know if it's cold, it goes blue, right?
Matt FoxIt's called the actual name of the mountain is Mount Wilson. Ah, all right. We'll see. I was actually skiing out in that area, and they're like, it's probably amazing. It really was. Oh my god. But we're doing the tour, and the guy's like, Yep, that mountain right there, that might look familiar to you. I'm like, it looks like the Paramount Mountain. He goes, Well, it is, but it's also the Coors Mountain. It's Mount Wilson.
Jamie FlanaganThat's awesome. Yeah, that's awesome. All right, but talk to me about your infinity bottle. Is that how long have you had that bottle? How many bottles do you say have contributed to it? And and to S3.
SPEAKER_05I will not answer the question how many have gone into this. That one I will not, but I'll answer the first one. What was the other question?
Jamie FlanaganHow long have how long have you had your infinity bottle? No.
SPEAKER_05So I started this uh 2020. Okay. When we were locked. Down and fair enough. You know, you couldn't go out. And then all of a sudden, this was a lot more convenient than drinking beer.
Jamie FlanaganFair enough.
SPEAKER_05The bourbons and all that stuff. So that's when I started. It was it was April, probably April 2020, is how long. How many of them in there? Countless.
Jamie FlanaganOkay. So how often do you draw from it?
SPEAKER_05Whenever I start running low on my other bottles. So I don't have much of a bar at home.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_05I have the basics. I always have Maker's Mark. That's my house brand. That's what I like and I'm most comfortable with. Sometimes I'll have nothing too fancy. One of the things I like about bourbon is that you can get some amazing product for not a lot of money. There are so many good choices that are $50 or less, right? And then there's other beverages where you have to spend $100, $200. And it's just it's crazy. Yeah, you can do that in the bourbon world.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05But now you're chasing rarity or something unique. Is it better? Maybe. Maybe not. But you can get, I mean, wild turkey 101 is fantastic, I think. What's wrong with that?
Jamie FlanaganI'm a wild turkey guy. There you go. Where are you at with the long branch? I like it. I love it. I like it. I like it.
August GitshlagDiscontinue it. No, I saw I saw the mire. I heard I heard it was discontinued.
Jamie FlanaganI did not hear that. I heard it. We have some.
August GitshlagI still have some in there.
Jamie FlanaganI just I just bought one for home because I heard it was discontinued, and I might buy another one just uh one on a on a reserve for remember when we used to be able to buy this on the shelf. So no, I but I understand, yeah, that the long branch is discontinued.
August GitshlagSo this is a 2016 no longer in production almanac. They probably stopped making that in 2016. Yeah, that's that's very good. That's great. I'm uh actually they have three different versions 16, 17, and 18. I don't know which one that is.
SPEAKER_06Now sour beers aren't everybody's cup of tea. I love I love them.
SPEAKER_05I'm a big fan of a real source the kettles. I'm not bit too into. Yeah, the kettles are do them all. Yeah, I'll do them all. Open fermentation, that's my jam. Okay, yeah, thank you. I remember when Jolly Pumpkin started getting like global, oh, thank you. Global attention. Yep, right. I I I saw that they were published. Somebody wrote about them in Germany, yeah, back in the day. I'm like, this is so cool. But now we have others, what is it? Beam and barrel, barrel beam.
August GitshlagI can't I was flipped the two. Barrel and beam is great. I I drink them when I go to the the Marquette uh beer festival every year. Everything's great.
Jamie FlanaganEverything, yeah. This is very nosy. Yeah, it is. There's a lot of smell going on in that one. Sure, thank you, August, sir.
Matt FoxI can totally uh I can really uh smell the the wine on the uh nose. Yeah, you can't.
SPEAKER_06You know, lemony, lemony thing, yeah. Definitely citrusy, yeah, very citrusy. You know, it it kind of reminds me actually of better, I think, but like talking. We were just talking about this the other day. Brett and I were talking about this August being talking about Noble Rot from Dogfish Head. Oh, yeah, yeah.
August GitshlagWe always remember that we were talking about that. We're doing that during the uh uh during uh trivia we were talking about.
SPEAKER_06Oh, yeah, that like that. I that liked that beer a lot. I like this a lot. This is better.
Jamie FlanaganWhat is the uh uh APV on this? This one here is seven and a half percent. Okay, that's not a that's not a knock your socks off, but it's not a stadium beer.
August GitshlagYeah, it's so dogfish head, it'll always remind me of being at the savor beer festival in DC. And it's after the festival, and I had spent some time with a young lady that night, and it was a good time, and I'd go meet everybody else at the bar right outside the cat the convention. This is funny, so just this bear with me. Okay, and I get there and we're sitting with someone from Bells, who's the very, you know, the guy with the long hair was he was the head of he ran Bells, but he wasn't Larry Bell. I don't know who you mean. I don't know. Yeah, he's a super nice guy, John, something like that. And he was sitting with Eric, it was me, Eric, Pipe and Brock, and someone else I didn't know. And I sit down, everyone's like, have a good time. Like, we just ordered a whole, they had a whole dogfish head takeover, and the waitress is coming over with this huge, all these bottles of stuff on this tray. She's walking over, and I see like the guy go to laugh, and he goes, he's like, and I see he's gonna and I'm like, no, he was gonna knock her back into her, and I see the tray go up towards her, and it all just rains down all over her, and then everything shatters, and then we're like, oh my god, oh my god, what you know, what what what? And so I happen to have a Kunin's polo shirt on with a Kunan's t-shirt on underneath it. And I'm like, you know what? I got another one of these polo shirts, and I got t sh I don't you need to be branded right now. So I take off the polo shirt and she's just distraught, right? And then people are out there cleaning up, and I go to the manager, I go, hey, here, give her the shirt. You know, she's it's not her fault. I I literally I literally watched it happen in slow motion.
SPEAKER_06Gave her the shirt off.
August GitshlagAnd I gave her the shirt off my back, and she comes out with this thing tied up, look cute as a button. She goes, That's so sweet. And the manager comes out, I goes, Hey, um, don't worry about that. I've got your next two rounds on me. That was just super cool that you gave her the shirt like that because she was all distraught and crying like she screwed up, and you guys told her she didn't do anything wrong. It was your fault. I appreciate that. No, it wasn't church key, it was a place right outside of the hotel where saver where we're safer for the saver person.
Jamie FlanaganI thought this would be going to a wet t-shirt concept. It was close to the wet thing.
August GitshlagI thought it was a difference, everything on that tray was dog fish shedded and I had a Midas touch coming. But I remember that.
Jamie FlanaganBy the way, August, yeah. He's got a I'm me, I'm going smut.
Matt FoxNo, chivalry is not dead yet. It could have been a wet t-shirt.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Could have gone there. Well, you you poured one of my beers at that festival.
August GitshlagYou poured the saucy mix, one of your beers. You're one of your recipes. Absolutely. We did that was gorgeous there. That was a neat delicious. So I'm really cold, so you get a little more flavor out of it. So, Barry, sours people sometimes want them really cold.
Matt FoxSo, Barry, you at the beginning, at the at the top of this episode, you had mentioned that you put your two weeks in. Yeah, what what is this next step that you're gonna be taking with the rest of you know your working career? What are you gonna be doing?
SPEAKER_06That's a good question.
Matt FoxYeah, are you allowed to share?
SPEAKER_06Not really. Okay, uh, just that there's a possibility that I'll I'll have other employment. There's plans, hopefully. Yeah, hopefully it works out. Yeah, doing something I love to do and it's creative, it's not a desk job. You know, the city of Hampton treated me very well. Yeah, the community was very, very nice to me. It was time for me to move on and to do something a little more creative than sit behind a desk and shuffle papers. Well, when you are allowed to share, no, we would love to hear what you're gonna be doing. Yeah, honestly. Oh so it'll be in the uh in the beverage industry for sure. Okay, uh reaching perhaps reaching into my experience of mead making and that sort of stuff.
Matt FoxCan I can I try your information? But everything's sort of oh absolutely, yeah. That's why I brought it.
Jamie FlanaganYay.
Matt FoxAre you gonna are you gonna bring up the eggnog and you're gonna make some really cool eggnog, maybe?
SPEAKER_06Blues, blues, yeah, all kinds of that. I actually have been sort of inspired to try to do that, but I've been told I was nuts. There's all kinds of things. But like an eggnog inspired mead that I think would be great myself, but my friends are like, I do.
August GitshlagI don't know, but you you know what he pulled off really well was the bananas foster's uh foster mead. That was fun.
Jamie FlanaganWe just want to make some room in here so you can add more bourbons to it. I appreciate it. No, I'm doing you a stop. No, I'm glad you're you are a helper. I'm a giver.
Matt FoxI'm a lover, not a fighter.
SPEAKER_05What's what's great about the this this concept is you never know what it's gonna taste like. Never, you know, bottle to you know, drink to drink. But sometimes it's it's like it's not all that good. You're like, I don't love it, but then that's fine because it's gonna be different next time, right? But but then you reach that that act that the the summit, right? And you're like, this is so good that it'll never taste away. You can't duplicate it. You'll never be able to get it again.
Jamie FlanaganNo, I'm I'm gonna keep this bottle up and start a new one so I can just keep the drinking this one as is. That's a good idea. You know, I gotta start a new one because I don't want to fuck with this.
SPEAKER_05I've never done that. I always just kind of have to give up on it.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, that that's uh that's uh Troubadour's way of dealing with it though.
August GitshlagWhat was the original bottle? That Jim Bean bottle or something? That's Evan Williams. Evan Williams bottle and bond. Everyone should have a bottle of that on their shelf. That is a perfect old booze. Perfect old-fashioned booze for the price. Absolutely right.
SPEAKER_05And the shape takes all the marketing materials that I can put on there too.
Adult Lego Obsession And Why It Sticks
SPEAKER_05So I'm into Lego, that's what I do. Music, there's this guy, Jack Broadbent.
August GitshlagWhoa, whoa, whoa, I'm into I'm into Lego, that's what I do. Why don't you bury the lead here?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm an adult fan of Lego, affle. Okay, I've been doing Lego my whole life except for that one point. You're an affle? I'm an you got to be careful saying that. We know exactly what we're doing.
SPEAKER_06We're gonna beat that horse too.
Matt FoxYeah, we've been we've been drinking booze. It's an affle.
August GitshlagIs anybody in our am I the only one in the room into Lego? No, I have uh my brother I've had a couple Legos in me, but what? Okay, whoa, I stepped on them and really low. So Lego Masters is one of my favorite shows I've ever watched.
SPEAKER_05But I I have to correct something real quick. It's it there's no Legos, it's plural and singular. Yeah, admire. But actually, actually, as he pushes the glasses, actually Lego.
SPEAKER_06There's no tape on those glasses though, either.
SPEAKER_05So I I was into Lego as a child, and I did all that, and then you reach a point where it's not cool anymore, and you stop, and everybody stops for a few years. And then when I graduated from college, there was a new Formula One set that came out. Oh it was so cool, and I'm like, I wish I was a kid so I could get it. Yeah, and like, wait a minute, why can't I get it? I got money now. And then you then I had I've got three kids, so the kids came in and I started doing with kids, and you wouldn't allow them to touch it, what they were always. I would always encourage, I would always encourage, and now it's uh two of the three of my kids are kind of still into it, and they're you know, 22 and uh uh 24 27.
Jamie FlanaganWho does it? Jason Mews, yeah, Bill Clerks, Clerks, right? This is my first Lego set Jay and Fine. One that was my first one, the space set. Jay and Sound of Jay. He you know, they partied hard, and so he's uh part of a sobriety, keep himself occupied, keep himself busy. He's a Lego guy, he's a Lego guy.
SPEAKER_06You know, it's I I'm really conflicted about the kits on Lego though. When I was a kid, you got a Lego set, and use your meditation number, there's X something. You got 350 pieces, go right.
Jamie FlanaganSee, I've got great news for you.
SPEAKER_05They still sell those sets, you can still get buckets of bricks. If you don't want the preordained, this is how you do it, this is what it looks like. Fine, and then you buy the bucket of bricks, they still have that, it's it's optional, and then you can still get the one that says it's going to be the Eiffel, the leaning tower of Pisa, it's gonna be this, yeah, and then you can still make anything you want out of it.
SPEAKER_06So we I want to I really want to buy a bucket of them for my I have a cute little great niece and great nephew, yeah. And I really want to buy them some Legos so that my niece and her husband can step on them and scream in pain. I gotta know they gotta know the feeling. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think it's you know, it's it's my job as an uncle.
August GitshlagIt's a right of passage as of a parent to go through that. That going, Mom and dad, can we dump the Legos today? Okay, and we had this brown shag carpet in our living room. Oh, yeah, me too. We had to shag carpet. I remember that sound, the rush of all the plastic coming out of the big bucket. And you would lose the little single pieces in that shaggy. And I always wanted the castles, all that stuff. I have I'm sitting on the movie theater right now that I want to put together just to put Casablanca on the marquee because it's like a 1940 scene movie theater, and I want it. So that's like that's the one Lego set I'm sitting at that I haven't put together right now. It's I'm I'm eating. But I got a few, I got a whole bunch in tubs. So you said you do Lego. Do you make a living Lego?
SPEAKER_05You want to make a living at it? No, it's just a cost, an expense. All my money goes out the window. It's kind of like beer, it's kind of like bourbon. Yeah, these things cost.
August GitshlagWell, the beer you drink, you just piss it out. Legos stay forever. I'm not selling it. So I'm okay.
SPEAKER_05You really can't piss a Lego, man. Lego passing a Lego has got to be like the worst. The Lego's song 57. So the Legos that I the Lego that I got when I was six years old still works, and I still have with the Lego I get tomorrow. So I've got ones I've got on display. I've got ones that are like organized in buckets and things like that. There most of them are at the cottage now, up in the thumb. And you know, kids come over when the you know neighbors come on over and things like that. We play Lego, it's a lot of fun. It's just it's just a hobby and a decoration, and it's take it took over the house, and uh my wife Angela wasn't pleased with that, so now it's taken over the cottage instead of the house. But I still kind of sprinkle it.
August GitshlagMy brother does all the Star Wars sets. I've got a lot of boxes. He just does Star Wars. Yeah, uh, there's I don't know. I dated a girl briefly who was just Harry Potter sets. Okay, and we just stack them all up. And then one of my good friends, you guys know the Madigans. Madigan's son was he was a a perfect directions kid. The Kraggle. You know, if if you if you took a piece, like, oh no, why don't you put them over here? No, on the box he goes here. And it was like very strict to it. I'm like, yeah.
SPEAKER_05When he emptied the box, did he tape and line up everything? All the red ones here, all the blue ones here.
August GitshlagWell, no, because the boxes come like open up in this order somewhere, package one, package two. Yeah, so you can't do that. Like, I get that. That's the autistic almost.
Matt FoxLike, August, we got our boy one Christmas, we got him the Millennium Falcon from the alternate universe. So it was black Millennium Falcon. That was cool, and Darth Vader was white. Oh, fun. And our and C3PO was he was white in the movies, too. That's a storm.
August GitshlagHe was a white guy, it was it was a white Darth Vader, really isn't James Hill Jones next season. It's a different guy.
Matt FoxBut yeah, so yeah, the the whole Lego thing, our our kid will sit down, it's a 1200-piece set and he'll have it put together in a couple of hours, you know.
SPEAKER_05Because he follows the steps and he's like, it'll teach you how to follow steps and to and to be patient and to take your time and figure things out on your own. And it's got the creativity too, because you can do your own thing, right? If you want to do anything you want to do. Oh, yeah, I'll do a little pour here.
Jamie FlanaganSo let's August, what's that? What's the next beauty?
Burns Doppelbock And Brewery Shakeouts
Jamie FlanaganOh, that's dinner. That you two have.
August GitshlagNo, it's not, it's not that thick. It's a it's a Doppelbach. It's not it's not thick like a like a like a stout.
unknownNo.
August GitshlagYeah, made by windows. Speaking of stout, are we doing the elks after this? I'm going home. They didn't ask you. I was talking to Jamie.
Matt FoxOh, fuck you then. There's no there's no wings.
SPEAKER_05I was in Germany and had a really good Doppelbach. It was Andex Monastery up in the mountain up in the hills out outside of Munich two years ago. Their Bach was ridiculous.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I was I was in uh I was in Munich two years ago. All the bars are, of course, our are sponsored bars, right? Yeah, so we we had to make sure if you want you went to the ondex or you know, we went to Pawalana or we, you know, we went to each individual one. And they only have like three or four beers on tap. Yeah, that's all you get, you know what I mean. And but if you want to hear all about the brand, then you gotta you gotta pick your bars more uh carefully. So, me not being able to make up my mind, I just went to them all.
August GitshlagAnd I was just so Barry, tell us about this uh Burns uh brewing because you know these guys personally, don't you? I do, I do. Wayne Burns. What's in my nose on this?
SPEAKER_06Is this grapey almost? It's a doppelbox, it's a German beer. Yeah, it's fruit, there'll be a little fruity on your nose. It's like plum, it's like a dark pruned almost dark stone fruit, maybe.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, you know that's like fruity on your nose.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, I know exactly what that's like. Okay, fair plan.
SPEAKER_06So Wayne Burns used to. I met Wayne Burns when he was brewing at Coonin Brewing in Warren. And this is from originally was at Koonin's brewing. Yeah, amazing. He's a stud, man. Wayne Burns is just an amazing brewer, and he does high octane beers like nobody's brother. I mean, he don't feel size. They don't feel boozy. They get you there though. It feels like a stout, though.
Matt FoxIt does feel like a stout.
SPEAKER_06It's a doppel, it's close. It's close, it feels like it.
SPEAKER_05It's sweeter and maltier.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it's maltier. Yeah, not so much roast. Yeah.
August GitshlagThis is fall 2022.
SPEAKER_06Okay. These bottles are no longer going to be available because uh Wayne has been victim to the to the collapse of the craft beer industry. A rumor has it he's coming back to Michigan to do it again, not on his own. I don't want to say anything because I don't know for sure if this has been cemented, but I for one am certainly happy that he and his lovely wife Laura will be back in the area if this works out.
August GitshlagThis one does say no longer available.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it Colorado is where he's in. He was in Denver, yeah. Yeah, pretty. It's uh this is delicious.
SPEAKER_05We were talking about Dogfish Head earlier. I I met a lot of folks, but one of my heroes, Sam, at the Great American Beer Festival this this past fall. That was the first time I ever went to Great American Beer Festival.
August GitshlagI missed it this year, but we'll be back. You've been there, yeah. How many times have you gone? I've never been. Oh, wait, oh, that's the Colorado one. I'm thinking of the Madison. Oh, great taste. That's a great taste of the Midwest. My bad, my bad.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the Great American Beer Festival was. So it's always been indoors, but I I guess next year it's going to be outdoors, so that could be very interesting in the fall later in the year in Denver. It's a little risky, I think. But uh when I was it was indoors, but it was shoot, it was like 75 degrees.
Matt FoxI'll bring my skis.
August GitshlagCome on, let's go. Yeah, plan B, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
August GitshlagWell, that's for later in the night, next morning. Jesus! Oh well, I'm glad you guys got that joke.
SPEAKER_03Zowie.
Where To Join And Final Thanks
August GitshlagIf it's still legal tomorrow, who knows?
SPEAKER_03All right, one more time, what are our websites?
Jamie FlanaganWhere do we go? All right, I'm gonna get involved in how do we drink beer? Would you be able to post a little flyer?
SPEAKER_05QR code? Yeah, send me a lot of things. Yeah, I'll get you that. Send me the yeah, and then anybody listening in. You know, if you're you know, you're driving you're listening to the podcast, driving along on your way to work and you're on your phone and you're you're hitting the buttons, which you shouldn't be doing, you know, you can hit me up at uh Instagram. Uh, you know, uh Instagram uh my handle is one formula o-n-e-f o r m u l a. Is that uh Lego based formula one backwards?
Matt FoxIs that is that uh Lego based?
SPEAKER_05No, it's not, it's formula one based. Really uh racing when I got that one. Still am a little bit, but uh and then the email address is shelby.township.bdoa. Shelby.township.bdoa beer at gmail.com of America. Yep, beer drinking of America. That's right. Three pillars, camaraderie, have fun. Help out your your your tap houses that you love and adore and breweries and restaurants, and help out your local community.
Matt FoxAnd the next event, when's the next event?
SPEAKER_05It's June 8th. It's at Washington in Washington Township at Brown Iron Brew House. Wonderful people, six o'clock. Great beer selection, fantastic food. Unbelievable. Yep, and good people that are own it and run it. Yep.
Matt FoxSo I've been to the Royal Local location. Yeah, and it's it's the food is amazing. The the Washington's the original, it's more of a the one by the hospital, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I've been in there, yeah. Okay, it'll always be Bombot to me. I don't know where they are. Orwell Health.
SPEAKER_06Orwell called it the hospital, the hospital. But everyone calls it Royal Local Bombot, right?
Matt FoxThat entire corner was raised to put that brewery in. Yes, yes. But Paul, thank you. Honestly, thank you. Thanks for having me.
SPEAKER_05It was a lot of fun, and uh it was kind of funny because of the the drinking. The I was thinking you were guys were booze drinkers, so I did a cocktail with it, and then you're pulling out these amazing, crazy good beers here, and all I brought was Peroni.
August GitshlagI hope I didn't let you down. Uh, you absolutely did until you pulled out the Infinity bottle, and that made everything better. Everything better. That was I was expecting the beer drinkers of America to come up with something to pull out of the pot. So I'm like, you know what? In case he, I'm just gonna bring a couple out of the cellar that I, you know, that was gonna take to Indy, but I'm like, you know, I'll take this. And I knew that uh Barry would like the burns.
SPEAKER_06So yeah, you didn't, you were not wrong on it.
Matt FoxYou introduced me to a good summer alternative. There you go.
SPEAKER_06When you said Peroni, I I misheard you. I thought you said you had Peronis, and I'm like, I think that's different.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that's been taken care of.
SPEAKER_06Okay, good. That's a disease, kids. Ask mom and dad.
Matt FoxBut gentlemen, thank you. In public, appreciate you all. That over there is August Gitchlag.
August GitshlagThe guy using uh, well, that's over. We'll talk to the guy the Glenn Karen over there. I gotta get my my stuff in order. That's Barry Mulso over there. That's me. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06And that is Jamie Flanagan.
Jamie FlanaganAh, we got Matt Fox. And and Paul, thank you.
August GitshlagThank you. Whoa, hey, thanks, guys. Wonderful. Thanks, Paul, for coming in. We'll have you in again. We're here every Monday. Poke your head at any time.
SPEAKER_05I won't be here on the 6th. I'll be at Washington in Washington Township at 6 o'clock. Bronair.
August GitshlagYeah. All right.
SPEAKER_05See you guys.
