Man Cave Happy Hour
Diabetic Dreams: A Journey Through Whiskey and Jelly Bean Pairings
What happens when three whiskey enthusiasts decide to pair fine spirits with jelly beans? Pure chaotic deliciousness! This episode takes you on a flavorful journey through unexpected combinations as Jamie, Matt, and August explore the intersection of childhood nostalgia and adult beverages.
The adventure begins with a sample of Willett Small Batch Family Estate Straight Rye Whiskey, setting the stage for our sweet experiments. We then dive into Jelly Belly's cocktail-inspired beans, identifying unique flavors like mojito, moscow mule, and gin and tonic before creating our own whiskey pairings. Watch as our toasted marshmallow beans meet Basil Hayden's Toasted Bourbon in a "toast on toast" combination, and witness the colorful transformation when red apple jellies soak in Yellowstone Bourbon.
Beyond the tasting experiments, we share personal jelly bean preferences (August loves black licorice while Jamie can't resist lemon-lime) and nostalgic candy memories. Did you know Jelly Belly makes over 100 different flavors? Or that Mountain Dew was originally created as a whiskey mixer? These fascinating tidbits pepper our conversation as we sample Writer's Tears Irish Whiskey, Eagle Rare, and Sazerac Rye alongside various beans.
The episode wraps with exciting news about our upcoming appearance judging smoked cocktails at Whiskey Taco Foxtrot and an invitation to our listeners. I said hey, hey welcome to the man Cave Happy Hour. I said hey, hey welcome to the man Cave Happy Hour. We're going to drink a fine whiskey and smoke a really fine cigar.
Jamie Flanagan: 0:25
It is time for Happy Hour. It is the man Cave Happy Hour Whiskey, cigars, spirits, the stories that go along with it. I'm Jamie Flanagan, I am Matt Fox.
August Gitschlag: 0:34
I'm myself today.
Jamie Flanagan: 0:37
I don't know what to do. What happened?
August Gitschlag: 0:40
I've only been doing this for two years now like that. I'm August, Yay August years now like that.
Matt Fox: 0:44
I'm August hey.
August Gitschlag: 0:47
August. Yay, I'm that guy August. You see my AOL chat name, that guy August.
Jamie Flanagan: 0:54
So today on the man Cave Happy Hour, we're going to be Getting our diabetic on. Yeah, heading into Easter right? So it's jelly bean time. Although these are not seasonals, these guys are year round. They're jelly bellies, but we're going to match. Well, we have more than just jelly. We do, we do, we do have more than just jelly.
August Gitschlag: 1:16
Yes, we got the branches generic over there that all taste the same flavor except for the black one.
Jamie Flanagan: 1:26
Exactly over there that all tastes the same flavor, except for the black one, exactly. And then, uh, yeah, so, but we got some jelly bellies and we're gonna, uh, we're gonna try to pair these up with some, uh, whiskeys. All right, right, so, because there's some scotch and there's some rye on here, uh, so I don't know, I don't know what we're gonna do. Uh, I have a plethora of flavors.
Jamie Flanagan: 1:39
We're gonna do something but the first thing before we do that um, I didn't pour myself a welcome cocktail yet and I going to do something. But the first thing before we do that I didn't pour myself a welcome cocktail yet and I wanted to do that with. I stopped off to see Tony at the you want to crack that for me? I got a bottle of the Will it Will. It has come to Michigan.
August Gitschlag: 1:57
Yes, it has. It's a private producer In all honesty.
Jamie Flanagan: 2:00
And that was it. So I go to Tony, I go, tony, I go, yeah, so it's he goes, he goes, it's, it's yeah, he goes.
Jamie Flanagan: 2:06
You can get it day in, day out. He goes even down in, even you can crack it fresh crack in front of the mic. Fresh crack, fresh crack, fresh crack. Here it comes, here it comes, nice, fresh crack, honestly. But when you said, but before we do that, you know what I thought you were going to say. I thought you were gonna say huh. I thought you were gonna say, jamie, tell me about your childhood. Oh yeah, will it tell me about your childhood? Yes, um so, but yeah, so it's uh. I went in and and he was like, yeah, there's uh, there's a lot of uh, he goes, he goes, he. Just his stores were up so he added another state and I'm like, oh well, fair enough, fair enough, fair enough, but yeah. So I picked up a bottle of the Willett Small Batch Family Estate.
August Gitschlag: 2:48
Yes, you did Straight rye whiskey, Matt.
Jamie Flanagan: 2:50
what? Because it's saying it's coming. This one is coming in at 113.6 proof.
August Gitschlag: 2:55
Yeah, the Willetts are all a little hot man yeah.
Matt Fox: 2:58
This is a different bottle because it's a co-mingling, actually, two different mash bills, all right. So mingling actually, two different mash bills, all right, so it's their rye whiskey. It's, of course, a non-chilled, filtered and bottled at cast strength oh, it smells, nice so the two mash bills that are in this um. 90 of the bottle is 74 rye, 11 corn and 15 barley yeah the other 10 yeah is 51 rye, 34, 34 percent corn and 13 percent barley. So it's two different mash bills that they kind of brought together in this amazing model.
August Gitschlag: 3:32
What I uh, what I say about blended whiskey?
Matt Fox: 3:34
you, you're mad at you.
August Gitschlag: 3:36
No, you're, you are not mad, you are, I am not mad like a consistent flavor that always works all right so.
Jamie Flanagan: 3:44
So, if you guys want, we're going to do something with this. This is a cup of the mixed bag. Oh, so I'm trying the Will it. It smells very, very nice. It's got that little bit of a rye spice on it. It's nice. I'm sure people have talked to Will it. We could almost do a whole damn show.
August Gitschlag: 4:00
I'm having a hard time sharing this on this bottle. What's going?
Jamie Flanagan: 4:02
on my share. It says august is watching with you. It says you're watching with me.
August Gitschlag: 4:07
I am watching with you technically I'm watching here live, live in the room.
Jamie Flanagan: 4:11
Yo, yeah, oh it's getting more spicy as it comes I haven't got a nip yet with 110.
August Gitschlag: 4:18
It's gonna be like that, though it's gonna put that rye spice.
Jamie Flanagan: 4:21
It's getting even spicier on the second set. All right, I'll indulge.
August Gitschlag: 4:23
Yeah, I mean I'm a wild turkey 101 rye spice is getting even spicier on the second sip. All right, I'll indulge. Yeah, I mean I'm a wild turkey one-on-one rye guy myself. Yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 4:27
Well, and that was why, because I was deciding which will it to get and I knew you loved ryes, so I went with the rye Sure For you, for you, this is the payback for the nap.
Matt Fox: 4:46
He tucked me in the opening day.
Jamie Flanagan: 4:46
Uh that was just my age. My age was showing up in detroit. Oh, it was friday. I'm sorry it is, it's already monday. It wasn't friday. I was sick in home school on friday. Oh, that's right, it wasn't. I don't know, but uh, yeah, no, I was. I was all over social media. I don't give a crap, but uh yeah but uh, so yeah, so uh, my old age showing through and we rocked it, we rocked through and we rocked it hard. Yeah, we rocked it hard.
August Gitschlag: 5:07
And then we went back to your place, you poured me another cocktail.
Jamie Flanagan: 5:13
Well, it was a welcome home drink. We started watching. We're watching Rambo. I thought it was a nightcap and I fell asleep, yeah it was a nightcap. And he went back out.
August Gitschlag: 5:23
Well, only because I had to go pick up the lady, yeah, so I'm gonna tell you something so years ago, but it was good, had to be about.
Jamie Flanagan: 5:29
Will.
August Gitschlag: 5:29
It had to be about six seven years ago I proposed on on the book of faces to have a jellybean party, a jellybean tasting party. Okay, and we, myself and, uh, you know, my buddy butch is renee, renee, but she's they they're like okay, well, we're in two. So we bought between Renee and I we must've bought 15 different kinds of jelly beans, like every jelly bean off the shelf, and we would text each other. I just found the nerds ones, or I just found the.
August Gitschlag: 5:53
This one's you know okay, so we found every kind of jelly bean we could include the generics and then we just put cocktail cups and line them all up. At the Polish Sea League, everyone walked by and was trying jelly beans. I was finger-banging the cup holes.
Matt Fox: 6:10
Why not Got it?
August Gitschlag: 6:10
in. I'll tell you what. More than one of us walked out the door and just went saccharine right down the storm drain outside the Sea League.
Jamie Flanagan: 6:20
We ate so much sugar that night. The nice thing about the Jelly Bellies is they're very flavorful. They're great. If you just have one or two, you're going to get a mouthful of flavor. So now there's a cup with at least eight different flavors in front of you. August, oh boy, all right. So before we start doing our pairings, we're going to pair up different jelly beans mainly Jelly Bellies and a surprise from Augustance.
August Gitschlag: 6:42
I need one of each color here. Yeah, they have a cocktail mix.
Jamie Flanagan: 6:48
So they have a bunch of Jelly Bellies. Eight, I think there's eight different colors.
August Gitschlag: 6:55
What am I missing? I don't know, there's a sheer white one, which I'm going to bet is the Margarita now.
Matt Fox: 7:01
It's either that or the Pina Colada.
August Gitschlag: 7:03
Pina Colada is usually the white one.
Jamie Flanagan: 7:06
I don't know. I don't know if I got them all. I am a sucker for a lemon, lime jelly bean I'll buy them at the generic place. I have the list right here, See, now I have the list here, but I didn't know if I wanted to tell you before if we could just try them. You can see the colors and see the list?
Matt Fox: 7:21
I don't have a list. There are no colors. I don't have a list of cheaters.
August Gitschlag: 7:24
I'm going in here blind.
Jamie Flanagan: 7:26
I didn't look at it.
August Gitschlag: 7:26
I haven't looked at it.
Jamie Flanagan: 7:27
I was going to say should I read the list of what we possibly have in front of us, or should we just taste them and see what they are? And see if we can figure out what they are.
Matt Fox: 7:37
All right, I'll shut my.
Jamie Flanagan: 7:37
Should we do that? Should we just out, or should I say, the list of, of what they?
August Gitschlag: 7:42
are. Well, someone's gotta say yes or no. So you want to be the master?
Jamie Flanagan: 7:46
well, no, I mean, we can all we can just try them all and go back and try a second round. They'll go. I think this is. I think this is it. I think this is it yeah, I mean all right.
August Gitschlag: 7:54
All right, let's go with that light green one we just put down there?
Jamie Flanagan: 7:57
how many green ones do you have?
August Gitschlag: 7:58
you have a light, green and a dark green.
Jamie Flanagan: 7:59
Oh, I only got one green one. I got a speckled green one. Is there a different one? Speckled green, mine's schmeckled here's a schmeckle.
Matt Fox: 8:07
That's back, it's speckled, it's the light green speckled yeah, the dark green.
August Gitschlag: 8:11
The dark green is speckled. Okay, I see they're both.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:13
They're both kind of schmeckled that's too dark.
Matt Fox: 8:16
You need a lighter green. I got the lighter green one, okay good, all right.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:19
So what are we doing? First a light green, one light green all right light green.
August Gitschlag: 8:22
One Light green. All right, light green. All right, wash my palate.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:25
Yeah, yeah, it's green.
August Gitschlag: 8:32
Yeah, my friends, is a mojito, that's a mojito 1,000%.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:36
The mint gives it away. Yeah, yeah, okay.
August Gitschlag: 8:38
All right, man. I think we nailed that one.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:42
That was easy Mojito.
Matt Fox: 8:45
Oh man, I think we nailed that one. That was easy, mojito. Oh yeah, let's go gold, do the gold one next.
August Gitschlag: 8:49
Get the mojito out of my teeth to ruin up the flavor.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:54
That's why I grabbed a water to kind of Well that night we did the jelly beans.
August Gitschlag: 8:57
I'm not going to lie.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:58
As I was driving home, I had my hands in all of these.
August Gitschlag: 9:03
I'm a sucker for these Starburst jelly beans. I'm not a chocolate guy. Chocolate I can give or take. Every once in a while I'll have a piece of chocolate. It was lovely. I don't want another one for a while. You have a sweet tooth. I'm a sucker for it.
Matt Fox: 9:16
You have a sweet tooth.
August Gitschlag: 9:19
That's a sweet buddy.
Jamie Flanagan: 9:22
Playing M&M's. I'm all about what's so gold. We're going gold next. Yeah, gold.
August Gitschlag: 9:28
Is rum and coke a thing on there? No, because I get nothing but cola. It's old-fashioned.
Matt Fox: 9:37
Old-fashioned. I don't know if that was on the list.
August Gitschlag: 9:39
What is now? It is.
Jamie Flanagan: 9:43
I didn't look.
August Gitschlag: 9:44
I want to look. Go ahead, look, go ahead. Look, you got to verify it somehow. All right, well, I would say that's the jelly belly version of it, old-fashioned. All right, I'll, I'll cheat and I'll look. Looks like a rum.
Matt Fox: 9:53
It tastes like a rum and coke at first I want to say it's like a pomegranate of some sort no, moscow mule oh yeah, all right, ginger.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:03
And I got ginger in my face anyway, so the other one was the mojito. Okay, had that one nailed Yep, yep, the mojito.
August Gitschlag: 10:11
You want to go white and blow our palates up here?
Matt Fox: 10:13
Yeah, let's go white.
August Gitschlag: 10:14
All right, this is going to be gin and tonic.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:18
Yep.
Matt Fox: 10:18
Tastes like nothing it's a gin and tonic.
August Gitschlag: 10:25
Yeah, I mean, you usually get a little lime in there.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:27
But I'm getting a little lime.
Matt Fox: 10:30
Maybe margarita.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:32
No, it's gin and tonic. Okay, it is gin and tonic and I am getting lime, yeah.
August Gitschlag: 10:37
Okay, okay, listen to us. Eat jelly beans everyone. How exciting is this?
Jamie Flanagan: 10:40
Yes, that is a good radio. How exciting is this? Yes, that is a good radio, it's as riveting radio as you can get. Let's chew into the microphone.
August Gitschlag: 10:45
Let's chew on expensive jelly beans that the proletariat eat All right, what color is next? Orange, let's go with orange Orange, all right. What's the cocktail in orange here?
Matt Fox: 10:58
Well, you're a mimosa guy, Jamie.
Jamie Flanagan: 11:02
It is a mimosa.
August Gitschlag: 11:03
Yeah, okay, guy Jamie, it is a mimosa, it's just orange. All I got was orange, orange orange it's hard to get the flavor of fine champagne.
Matt Fox: 11:11
That's a French. 75.
August Gitschlag: 11:14
We were at Otava Villa yesterday, Catherine and I. We did a lovely dinner at Chartreuse.
Matt Fox: 11:19
I saw that yeah.
August Gitschlag: 11:21
I worked my ass off on opening day. I have cash. I'm flush. I'll take you out, baby. I'm like, yeah, and I was there, you know, I worked my ass off on opening day. Let's go, I have cash, I'm flush, I'll take you out, baby, all right. And so I'm like I'll take it. So I went there and then we went over to Otava Via just to see the bartender. He was a really nice guy and we're going to meet my buddy, clarence, at Nemo down the. You're my people, these are my people.
Jamie Flanagan: 11:43
I found my people.
August Gitschlag: 11:44
You're my people Found my people. Oh, all right, so are we going to go?
Jamie Flanagan: 11:50
My sister is like oh, that's riveting.
August Gitschlag: 11:53
You guys chewing into the microphone, is that great?
Jamie Flanagan: 11:55
Yeah.
Matt Fox: 11:56
Like putting two brackets together.
August Gitschlag: 11:58
Chew on this. It's riveting. All right, we're going to do this. I'm going to start drinking again Next color the reddish, the reddish. This has got to be your strawberry daiquiri, something like that probably, or the pomegranate Cosmo. That's a thing. Pomegranate Cosmo is an option.
Jamie Flanagan: 12:21
It is in the Jelly Belly world.
August Gitschlag: 12:24
It's not bad. I don't even drink pomegranate Cosmos and I'm half gay.
Matt Fox: 12:30
Give me a Cosmo.
Jamie Flanagan: 12:32
I like that palm serious stuff or whatever. That's fun to make some cocktails with that.
Matt Fox: 12:37
Throw an umbrella on it. Let's go, and I throw an umbrella in it.
Jamie Flanagan: 12:40
I'm good to go.
August Gitschlag: 12:41
So then, we know the other pink, one strawberry daiquiri. We're going to go with the yellow. This is going to be our pina colada by process of elimination here.
Matt Fox: 12:50
I forgot how to human.
August Gitschlag: 12:53
Oh yeah, I'm getting caught in the rain right now. I'm not into yoga and I have half a brain.
Matt Fox: 12:57
I don't need to taste it.
August Gitschlag: 12:58
Yeah.
Matt Fox: 12:59
I lost mine. It tastes like suntan.
Jamie Flanagan: 13:01
It tastes straight up like suntan lotion. Suntan lotion and oh, sign me up and regret and the Macarena, suntan lotion and the.
August Gitschlag: 13:09
Macarena on a boat. I'm on a boat when they shake you down for all the money in your pocket so they won't take you back from the private island.
Matt Fox: 13:17
Sorry that ever happen to you. Just me, Just you.
August Gitschlag: 13:22
Okay, and whoever was with you, we're going to go with the margarita and green now because we're in the process of elimination. Let's move this along, so you can listen to us eat jelly beans.
Jamie Flanagan: 13:30
That is a margarita. The whole show is based on chewing into the microphone. I don't think you thought this through Chewing into the microphone.
August Gitschlag: 13:38
Big hand. Big head, little hands Chewing into the microphone and a poppy Pop. The last one.
Matt Fox: 13:49
But these are all. These don't have alcohol in them At all.
August Gitschlag: 13:50
No, In any way shape or form.
Matt Fox: 13:51
It's the only thing they got going against them. These are mocktails. Mocktail jelly belly cocktail, yep. In any way shape or form, it's the only thing they got going against them. These are mocktails.
Jamie Flanagan: 13:59
Mocktail Jelly Belly Cocktail.
August Gitschlag: 14:02
Yep, these are the jam right here. These sour-burst ones will blow your face apart.
Matt Fox: 14:06
Yeah, yeah, are they sour or are they just regular?
Jamie Flanagan: 14:08
They're regular ones which are great, are they like? They all taste pretty much the same Nope.
August Gitschlag: 14:13
They all got a little flavor to them, mmm yeah. You can pick orange versus green versus purple.
Matt Fox: 14:20
Oh yeah.
August Gitschlag: 14:21
They have Cerberus flavor to them. They literally burst. And I'm not paid by the company.
Matt Fox: 14:28
This episode, brought to you by yeah those are good.
August Gitschlag: 14:32
So now I'm thinking about the sweetness and the flavors that we got all lined up over there, buddy.
Matt Fox: 14:39
And what we're going to drink with it. You got a whole smorgasbord in front of you.
Jamie Flanagan: 14:43
One, two, three, four, five six.
August Gitschlag: 14:45
I got seven different bourbons on the table. You need a program. I'm not talking about a list. Starbucks is your favorite.
Jamie Flanagan: 14:55
Over any of the Jelly Belly flavors the Starburst you would like. I don't buy that, I just get Starburst. No, I love the generic.
August Gitschlag: 15:03
When you go to those bulk candy stores I go right after the lemon lime and I get a pound of the fuckers and I will just eat those on a plane. I always get them in the airport. I just mouth on that stuff and just come back diabetic coma, Jelly, Belly, lemon lime Jelly.
Jamie Flanagan: 15:17
Belly.
August Gitschlag: 15:17
Whatever. Sometimes they're jelly bellies, sometimes there's generic jelly bean okay, but they make a lemon, they make a lime and they make a lemon lime. That lemon lime is just to me, it's crack cocaine for traveling, my travel crack every year. Every other year we got to go to a convention in uh, grand traverse. I have that bulk candy store in the, in the hotel. Clerk's gone wild, oh, clerk's gone mild. That's what I wanted to hear.
August Gitschlag: 15:39
Yeah, and uh, I always dive right into the to the jelly beans, but I am looking forward to that branches the taste of my generic sugar shot childhood right. Yeah, oh, yeah the only one that tastes different is the black one.
Jamie Flanagan: 15:51
Right, I don't think there's any black ones in there, they're purple. The bin as I was scooping I know I was looking because I know you're an advocate for the black ones, where most people are like oh, pick it up. There's what's left in the bowl. I'm a black licorice guy. I love that flavor.
Matt Fox: 16:09
Not many people are black licorice and enjoy that All right.
August Gitschlag: 16:13
So, matt, oh, I know, I know the same people drink Fernette and I'm like you're morons, google real quickly how many different jelly belly flavors are there?
Jamie Flanagan: 16:20
all right, let's find out because there's a, there's a ton. I got a whole little brochure. I was at the bulk food place but I'm sure they have more than just this. But and this, it tells you how to like. Oh, take this flavor and this flavor and it makes this flavor and it's like. So it's got a whole array of things and it's got an app. You can log in and talk about your favorites.
August Gitschlag: 16:39
Well, who doesn't?
Matt Fox: 16:42
At least we're not playing that.
August Gitschlag: 16:43
Jelly, belly Roulette, shit, where you got the poop-flavored and the booger-flavored.
Matt Fox: 16:47
That's that Harry Potter one I've got a bogey-flavored one.
Jamie Flanagan: 16:52
They made it Harry Potter later.
August Gitschlag: 16:53
It's just like little kids loser shit because they got the gross one.
Jamie Flanagan: 16:58
That's what it was all about, and by little kids.
August Gitschlag: 17:00
I mean me, because I love jelly beans and I don't want ruined by getting a goddamn Vomit flavored one, grass flavored one, you know yeah.
Matt Fox: 17:09
Gasoline flavored Jelly belly. They actually have over a hundred flavors. Over a hundred different flavors 50 of them are considered official. Okay.
Jamie Flanagan: 17:21
Including very cherry of them are considered official, including Very Cherry Butter Popcorn and Sizzling Cinnamon. Do you have a favorite flavor of Jelly Bellies? You know.
Matt Fox: 17:28
I always liked the cinnamon ones if I'm being honest. The popcorn ones. It wasn't my jam.
August Gitschlag: 17:33
Oh no.
Jamie Flanagan: 17:33
I like the popcorn, but I thought it was unique. It is unique. I have some of my favorite. I can't eat a handful of them but they nailed it.
August Gitschlag: 17:41
And I do enjoy buttered popcorn as a theater junkie, so that's like wow, this is a flavor that shouldn't exist.
Jamie Flanagan: 17:48
As a jelly bean. They nailed it pretty good, so I got two favorites. One is the buttered, but I can't just Like you with the lemon lime. You can eat a whole bag. I don't know if I can do a whole bag of the popcorn ones. No, no, no, no.
August Gitschlag: 18:01
I couldn't.
Matt Fox: 18:02
They did have a pear one. Yeah, and I actually enjoy the pear one as well.
Jamie Flanagan: 18:06
You're so hip.
Matt Fox: 18:07
I like the toasted marshmallow too. There, you go.
Jamie Flanagan: 18:10
So those are my two favorites. The toasted marshmallow I can eat more of and I like getting a whole mixed bag bag, I guess I'm just simple syrup.
August Gitschlag: 18:17
It's like lemon, lime and cherry. Yeah, that's my jam. Yeah, yeah, I don't know.
Jamie Flanagan: 18:21
I don't want the mix bag with the bogey flavor and the grass flavor and all that, but I, I, I like it, and then you get just oh, oh, there's that, oh that, that yummy little taste, uh, and they are very flavorful. Just one will do, but what I have, what we have laid out here, we got. I got dr pepper. Okay, uh, red apple. Okay, uh, chocolate pudding. What'd you call me? Yep, chocolate.
Matt Fox: 18:41
Dr Pepper, okay Red apple, okay Chocolate pudding.
Jamie Flanagan: 18:42
What'd you call me Yep Chocolate pudding?
August Gitschlag: 18:45
All right, wasn't that your nickname in middle school.
Jamie Flanagan: 18:46
No easy there that was in elementary school. French vanilla butter, popcorn, pink bubble gum, toasted marshmallow and caramel corn, did I see a red one which? One was that that was the red apple, the red apple. I see a red one. Which one was that the red apple? You had a red apple, right.
Matt Fox: 19:02
See.
August Gitschlag: 19:02
I'm actually looking forward to that and some whiskey, yeah yeah, yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 19:06
So I was looking online because I was like oh, we're coming up on Easter because we did Girl Scout cookies before.
Matt Fox: 19:14
Yes, we did.
Jamie Flanagan: 19:14
We should maybe do like some Easter candy, yeah, and I'm like, okay, jelly beans, and I go and pairing jelly beans and whiskey and I came across a an article interviewing a woman who does like Sarah from a flavor journal, but she has her own thing, her own foodie site, and she was talking about flavors and how to taste flavors and and then how to pair jelly beans and she was being interviewed about having written this article. I couldn't find the original article, so I did a little more digging and finding and I found a bar that had done an offering of pairings and that's where I got the Dr Pepper, red Apple, chocolate pudding Interesting and toasted marshmallow those were the flavors that they had used with their pairing and they had whiskeys and one rye.
Jamie Flanagan: 19:59
And they had whiskeys and one rye. So they were all whiskeys and one rye. I have an array of things. I pulled out some scotch. I got some Dewar's White Label to go.
Matt Fox: 20:09
That's your favorite, right August.
August Gitschlag: 20:11
To go with the toasted Scotch, scotch, scotch, stay away from my belly.
Jamie Flanagan: 20:15
So it's either the toasted marshmallow with the scotch or the toasted marshmallow with the toasted basil Hayden.
August Gitschlag: 20:21
See, I like the idea of the toasted basil Hayden yeah, toast on toast, toast on toast, toast on toast, toast on toast, and so I didn't really have a plan.
Jamie Flanagan: 20:30
Because they're not the same whiskeys that that one bar was offering up, I figure we'll go our own way, right.
August Gitschlag: 20:35
At this point let's go basil and marshmallow. Then I want to do a bourbon and cherry. Yes, all right.
Jamie Flanagan: 20:42
So I'm thinking like the Yellowstone or the Eagle Rare.
Matt Fox: 20:45
I picked up a Thank you for the Eagle Rare. That's one of my favorite drinks.
Jamie Flanagan: 20:50
That's a barrel pick from Tony and this is not a one jelly bean experiment.
August Gitschlag: 20:57
It's going to be like three in your mouth to get the flavors all going.
Matt Fox: 21:01
I'm going to hate myself tomorrow.
August Gitschlag: 21:03
You're going to be fine, like you wake up loving yourself. Anyway, I try to. Life goals, man, life goals. I got to coach everything.
Jamie Flanagan: 21:15
Well, just pour less whiskey.
August Gitschlag: 21:17
Yes, I'm supposed to be pouring less whiskey these days.
Matt Fox: 21:21
Who are you talking to?
Jamie Flanagan: 21:22
So that's why I figured there'd just be little taste shots here, we wouldn't go full bore with cocktails.
August Gitschlag: 21:28
I'm also not a huge fan of this Right and my two experiments with the. I'm sorry about that, Jamie. No, you're good, Didn't mean to deny you your own jelly beans.
Jamie Flanagan: 21:40
So what are you going to do with all these jelly beans when you go home? Oh, I'm going to chow the hell out of them. I got to wait until after lunch. I got to hide them from Colleen Once again. Thank God she doesn't listen to the podcast. Oh boy, she's like I'm hiding candy. You're hiding candy in your school desk again. Hell yeah, that's where I hide my candy. I hide the candy at the podcast studio. Keep it in the van.
August Gitschlag: 21:58
Down by the river, all right Mouthful of marshmallow Chili beans.
Jamie Flanagan: 22:06
They are toasted marshmallow, yeah okay, Nailed it.
Matt Fox: 22:12
I would say do you chew?
Jamie Flanagan: 22:13
it first. I like these, I so like them.
Matt Fox: 22:17
Do you chew drink, then swallow.
August Gitschlag: 22:20
There's no rules, buddy spit and swallow your matt.
Matt Fox: 22:23
What do you?
Jamie Flanagan: 22:24
spit or swallow I play toast so like patty cake, but different.
Matt Fox: 22:29
I'm 12 I'm playing toasted. That's actually pretty good, that uh pairing there.
August Gitschlag: 22:38
I actually that's very sweet. It's nothing I'd expect at a five-star restaurant, but for a podcast it works as a pairing.
Matt Fox: 22:45
Well, yeah, but still.
August Gitschlag: 22:46
I mean, I'm not putting this on a fucking menu, but some people put dumber things like I'm going to give you a whiff of lavender oil and then now try to kind of sniff the stick and now you get the essence of the cocktail. I'm like get bent. I don't want the essence of nothing.
Jamie Flanagan: 23:03
I'll give you a whiff of the stick.
Matt Fox: 23:05
The toasted marshmallow jelly bean brought out the sweetness yeah it brought out the sweetness. You didn't get that much of a warmth, or a bite, as the people will say.
August Gitschlag: 23:16
I also never got much toast out of the toasted. I just don't know that it's great. I'm a Basil Hayden fan.
Jamie Flanagan: 23:22
Yeah, yeah. I just didn't know if the toasted marshmallow would bring out more toasty.
August Gitschlag: 23:29
I get it, it was worth the move.
Jamie Flanagan: 23:31
Toasty flavor.
August Gitschlag: 23:32
Worth the move.
Matt Fox: 23:33
It was a good experiment.
August Gitschlag: 23:35
I've gotten in trouble for doing this before, but next Okay.
Jamie Flanagan: 23:39
So the Yellowstone, let's go with the Yellowstone and the Red Apple. What I'm going to do is I'm going to sip, do you?
August Gitschlag: 23:44
want to do cinnamon or bowl.
Jamie Flanagan: 23:46
I don't have cinnamon.
Matt Fox: 23:49
He just says he loves it.
August Gitschlag: 23:50
I really enjoy the cinnamon. That's why I don't have it. Then I do your joys, it's all good.
Jamie Flanagan: 23:55
I was going to message you guys and ask what were your favorite Jelly Belly flavors? All of them oh because there was the Mr. The bulk food store is across the street from the wine garden.
August Gitschlag: 24:06
Yes, it is, it's all yes.
Jamie Flanagan: 24:08
It's all very serendipitous, so I was like, all right, I got to go see Tony, speaking of which we got to get the A&B guys in here again he's working. Tony's working on his back room furiously.
August Gitschlag: 24:17
We have a vacation day on a Tuesday.
Matt Fox: 24:20
I do. I have a day off next Tuesday, not tomorrow, next Tuesday.
August Gitschlag: 24:23
Yeah, we'll need a day off. You need a day off.
Jamie Flanagan: 24:26
We got to get a driver. I'm going two and not three, because three was a lot of stickiness in my mouth, I can handle it. Well, it was a lot to chew. I'm going to sip the bourbon first, like a half of a sip, all right. Then do the jelly beans.
Matt Fox: 24:45
Oh, that's different.
August Gitschlag: 24:47
You put the jelly beans in there, that soak overnight, then cheese clocked it out. There's got to be some sort of yeah, that's what the hard luck guys, that's how hard luck vodka started. Yeah, oh, okay, they were soaking candy in Svetka. I'd like vodka started. Yeah, oh, okay, I'm just soaking candy in Svetka and they own the recipes. Hmm, all right. So I got a little red apple prep. Prep the hole.
Matt Fox: 25:09
Hmm.
August Gitschlag: 25:13
All right, listeners, I have a bit of advice for you. Don't do that. None of this works any better. It doesn't make anything change.
August Gitschlag: 25:20
All I taste is jelly beans, yeah, and rye and bourbon, bourbon, yeah it's almost like the same way that when we were smoking the cocktails, that's. That was a. I might become a hypocrite because I just made fun of like having me smell things before I drink it, but that changed the way things tasted because the smokiness was dominating the room. Sure, you could smell it everywhere. So this is kind of the same.
Jamie Flanagan: 25:41
Domination Is the sugar just dissipating with the whiskey.
Matt Fox: 25:46
The sugars are combining. It's either one or the other. You don't get distinctly something.
Jamie Flanagan: 25:52
It's like overly sweet bourbon.
August Gitschlag: 25:54
I just feel like I'm a poor man. It's not a poor man, it's a higher A rich man because it's Jelly. A poor man, it's a higher. What a rich man. Because it's jelly, belly and yellowstone a rich man's crown apple yeah, it's basically all I'm doing.
Jamie Flanagan: 26:06
Yeah, you know, I'm just really really flip an expensive, oh my god I'm gonna leave these three in there until later.
August Gitschlag: 26:16
See what what happens.
Matt Fox: 26:17
All right.
Jamie Flanagan: 26:20
Soakies. All right, that's nice, let it dissolve. Do we want to do anything else with? So the Irish? We got the. I brought an Irish whiskey because it's a little lighter. An Irish whiskey is a little lighter.
August Gitschlag: 26:34
Oh, is it now? Yeah, oh yeah, bastard. Thanks for that. So I'm thinking, I think, thinking 101 proof yeah, it's like 117. You know?
Jamie Flanagan: 26:42
113, 110. God, one more Call in the fire brigade. What's that word? Fire brigade? All right, so what do we think Now? Chocolate, there's a top buddy.
August Gitschlag: 27:00
Seal these up. We don't want any evaporation, whatever. All right, so I couldn't reach.
Jamie Flanagan: 27:06
I felt a spill coming on. So now, oh, this is the wrong one. You say the chocolate doesn't Much cork. The candy isn't really changing the flavor of the whiskey. Right but when I have chocolate with a bourbon. I don't know, it's a nice flavor treat Chocolate stays in your mouth longer, I think.
Matt Fox: 27:32
What do we want to?
Jamie Flanagan: 27:32
try, because we have writer's tears, we're not going to do scotch no we don't want to do scotch.
August Gitschlag: 27:38
You can do whatever you want. I will not be forced into your scotch and apple cider Not be bullied.
Jamie Flanagan: 27:46
Yeah, apple cider cocktails does not end well for August. Nope, so yeah. So this is from Carlo Ireland Writer's Tears, copper Pot.
Matt Fox: 27:58
I've never had Writer's Tears. I'll be honest, I've never had Writer's Tears.
August Gitschlag: 28:01
I've cried while writing term papers, but that's about it.
Jamie Flanagan: 28:04
Did we not do Writer's Tears when we did our Irish? Was I being selfish and kept this at home? Yeah, or did I?
August Gitschlag: 28:11
bring it in. You were incredibly generous. You didn't bring it in. I've never seen that bottle before are you sure? Yeah, we're. We're two to one here.
Jamie Flanagan: 28:17
We've never seen the bottle all right, I thought I brought it as part of the possible lineup when we did the irish whiskeys. What flavor of uh you?
Matt Fox: 28:25
spoke. You talked about it because you got that so either a friend of yours. When you went to a convention up in grand rapids you talked about that bottle. Yeah, we, you never brought that bottle in okay, all right.
Jamie Flanagan: 28:35
well, I'm glad I brought it today. Yes, me too. Either French vanilla or chocolate pudding, what do you think which one?
Matt Fox: 28:42
Or caramel corn, french vanilla or caramel, which ones?
Jamie Flanagan: 28:45
There's a chocolate pudding or French vanilla. Maybe I would do French vanilla, that's just me personally or. Dr Pepper. You know, Dr Pepper is kind of like.
August Gitschlag: 29:01
So I love there was a woodford reserve. That was a black cherry, okay, years ago. That was so good with dr pepper. Yeah, and the only reason I I mixed it with dr pepper was because my roommate at the time was liquor rep and we had all these bottles laying around and so I uh, yeah, I would drink dr pepper I like that.
Jamie Flanagan: 29:16
So what do we? What do we want to do with the uh writers? I?
August Gitschlag: 29:18
would do the the vanilla the vanilla.
Matt Fox: 29:19
Yeah, I, I would do the vanilla.
August Gitschlag: 29:20
The vanilla. Yeah, I'm going to save the Dr Pepper for another bourbon. I'm going to do Sazerac with Dr Pepper when we're done.
Matt Fox: 29:28
I like that.
Jamie Flanagan: 29:30
Now, this was another mixed bag. I was like, wow, I'm pouring too many bags here. Careful, there's popcorn in here and vanilla and then pink bubblegum, so make sure you're grabbing the white ones. Yeah, the white ones are the whiskey's already turning red here. Oh wow, Look at that, Let me see oh yeah, look at that. Yep, now that crown Royal red apple should be red the white ones August, the white ones there you go, there's a little of the writer's tears.
Matt Fox: 29:59
I'm excited to try this Jamie.
Jamie Flanagan: 30:00
I'll give it a sipper-sipper before we try the jelly bean too, I'm going to indulge myself a little bit on that, oh, he went.
Matt Fox: 30:08
I went heavy on that one Full boat. I've never had it and I'm excited to try it. So, it's yeah, it's definitely an the it says it's a bourbon.
August Gitschlag: 30:18
But it's not. It's an.
Matt Fox: 30:20
Irish whiskey.
Jamie Flanagan: 30:20
No it's an Irish whiskey.
Matt Fox: 30:23
Oh, it does say bourbon on the label.
Jamie Flanagan: 30:24
It does. It can't be because it was made in Ireland. Was it aged in bourbon barrels? It might have been aged in bourbon barrels. That might be what it says.
Matt Fox: 30:34
The closing and the barreling that's very reminiscent of a red breast. I will tell you that yeah. Yeah, it's very reminiscent of a red breast.
August Gitschlag: 30:41
Yep Matured in bourbon casks.
Jamie Flanagan: 30:44
There you go.
August Gitschlag: 30:45
Matured in bourbon casks.
Matt Fox: 30:46
I had to play trombone with it to read it because I don't have my reading glasses. Oh, that's not the right white one.
Jamie Flanagan: 30:52
Oh, you had a little popcorn in there.
Matt Fox: 30:54
Oh, lighter or darker, it's the lighter one, that is, the French vanilla.
Jamie Flanagan: 30:59
The popcorn has yellowish spots.
August Gitschlag: 31:03
That's vanilla. All right, let me re-finger. Bang the bag, yeah All right.
Matt Fox: 31:12
Yeah, I think vanilla would be the right way to go because of the hints of vanilla, there's not a lot of vanilla in here what you only have, like three, like four jelly beans.
August Gitschlag: 31:19
I'm finding a vanilla in a haystack here.
Jamie Flanagan: 31:21
Mm-.
August Gitschlag: 31:24
Damn it finding him.
Matt Fox: 31:28
Really there's only one.
August Gitschlag: 31:32
I can only find one.
Matt Fox: 31:33
See, that's something I would actually do. I see two there.
August Gitschlag: 31:36
They're all the other. They're a different kind of white.
Jamie Flanagan: 31:38
Alright, alright.
August Gitschlag: 31:40
We all look alike.
Matt Fox: 31:43
Don't shoot until you see the whites Of their eyes. Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes.
Jamie Flanagan: 31:52
But I do like that writer. No, it's the other way around.
August Gitschlag: 31:54
That's a fucking popcorn.
Matt Fox: 31:57
Oh, you got it wrong.
August Gitschlag: 31:59
You got it wrong. I asked you which one you go. That one there, I'm OK.
Matt Fox: 32:02
My bad.
August Gitschlag: 32:03
OK, I'm not going to hold it against.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:04
All right, let me see. Let me see this just for seven seconds. All right, let me see the bag Dad.
Matt Fox: 32:10
All right, there you go, son.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:12
There you go son.
August Gitschlag: 32:16
A-li-li-li-li-li. All right, bag Dad, bag Dad reference. I've been in Chaldean weddings, I can do that.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:20
I have not, I cannot.
August Gitschlag: 32:22
Yeah, now tell me the other ones were fried. I got them. I got them. Now I'm good. I had them. The whole time I had them inside, thinking they were popcorn, all right.
Matt Fox: 32:30
It's a little bit dark in here.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:32
It is, it is. We are in our mood settings.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:34
For sure it looks well lit on the video, but it's actually a little dark in here. Yeah, that's nice, it's a nice. You know they complement each other. Again, I wouldn't go out of my way to go like, oh, I'm going to have a belly, I'm going to get a Ziploc of Jelly Bellies while I sit down and watch TV and have them with my bird, although I will have. What the heck are those? The pomegranate covered in chocolate? They're like the little blueberries covered in chocolate.
August Gitschlag: 33:00
There's whatever Pomegranates are the blueberries.
Jamie Flanagan: 33:08
They have different the blue package and the red package what? What are those called matt? What is it? Chocolate covered pomegranates.
August Gitschlag: 33:11
They're chocolate covered pomegranate they're called just that chocolate covered.
Jamie Flanagan: 33:14
But there's a what's the brand, oh, I don't know.
Matt Fox: 33:16
Type chocolate covered pomegranates okay, sorry, you want me to get the google machine.
August Gitschlag: 33:20
What I will enjoy the machine is going to the like some of the polish places in hamtramck and getting the Grand Marnier chocolates. They have the orange Grand Marnier inside the chocolate. That's a bite. That's like ooh, we get that little.
Matt Fox: 33:32
Chocolate-covered pomegranate seeds. Chocolate-covered pomegranate oh, brookside, brookside, the Brookside.
Jamie Flanagan: 33:39
I couldn't. I just I never can remember that I love the Brookside's right With just a little, a couple of those, or maybe even some Raisinets, like some chocolate covered.
Matt Fox: 33:49
Raisinets, now you're talking my language.
Jamie Flanagan: 33:52
Some Raisinets while I'm eating my bourbon. Eating my bourbon, drinking my bourbon.
August Gitschlag: 33:56
Eat that bourbon.
Jamie Flanagan: 33:58
Or those little Gardelli's squares with the caramel.
Matt Fox: 34:00
Oh yeah, maybe not.
August Gitschlag: 34:03
The Saunders Sea Salty, get it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the only chocolate that I find to be addictive.
Matt Fox: 34:07
I'm gaining like five pounds, All the weight I lost over Lent.
Jamie Flanagan: 34:11
I'm gaining back in 10 seconds. Just listen. What did you give up for?
August Gitschlag: 34:13
Lent.
Matt Fox: 34:15
Mountain Dew. Oh nice, you drank that much fucking Mountain Dew. I drank enough to know that I shouldn't be, and I got to do something, were you?
August Gitschlag: 34:22
drinking all the Code Red? No, were you drinking all the Code Red? No, the stuff that Seal sang about I was a purist. No, zero sugar for you, buddy.
Jamie Flanagan: 34:30
We haven't done Mountain Dew, because Mountain Dew supposedly was made to be a mixer for whiskey. That's why it was originally created to be a mixer for whiskey.
August Gitschlag: 34:40
I just know that years ago. This is a funny story. I have no shortage of those. My brother and I are at a brain-delayed Tiger game. We're at the Dirty Trick. Actually, it was still probably the Hard Luck Lounge back then. It's now a bodega over there. Okay, and I love using that word bodega in Michigan.
Matt Fox: 34:57
Who are you from? New York? Who are you from?
August Gitschlag: 34:59
New York man, You're John Mulaney's kid.
Matt Fox: 35:03
Yeah, what of it?
August Gitschlag: 35:04
Yeah, that was a lot of podcasts.
Matt Fox: 35:05
Did you see? I was just born two years ago.
August Gitschlag: 35:08
And they had. It was when Summer Shandy just came out. Yeah, and Three Olives had the dude flavored vodka, which was supposed to be Mountain Dew, which also tasted like regular Gatorade. Huh, so they called it dude, dude stew. So we made a comment about oh, this is really good when you put it inside a pint of Summer Shandy.
Matt Fox: 35:30
Okay, it just mixes in well Mountain Dew and Summer.
August Gitschlag: 35:32
Shandy the Mountain Dew flavored vodka. Oh so I'm not thinking anything of it. I know my buddy, tim, was a bartender. My brother and I are sitting there, we're in our third pint and we're like like, how do we get so effed up? I remember this. We've just been sitting around here. He was putting full-blown pours of dude vodka into our summer shandy uh-huh. And after the second one we're like well, they're going down a little harder. What's going on?
Jamie Flanagan: 36:04
so, uh, here's the thing Quadruple check, because one of these is Dr Pepper and one of these is chocolate pudding. And I'm pretty sure these are the Dr Peppers. I wrote Dr Pepper on this bag, but you can't tell by the smell, so taste one and make sure it's Dr Pepper.
August Gitschlag: 36:20
I don't have any here to taste. Is that Dr Pepper?
Jamie Flanagan: 36:28
Oh, we handed it to you and you handed it away, did I? I don't know what I was doing. I was talking about the dude shit Alright. So we're doing one last one, and this is Dr Pepper.
August Gitschlag: 36:33
At least it's on the podcast.
Jamie Flanagan: 36:38
Oh, I'm getting the Dr Pepper.
Matt Fox: 36:39
Oh, that's Dr Pepper.
Jamie Flanagan: 36:42
How do they get the fizz in there? I didn't get the fizz. I'm getting the fizz in there. I didn't get the fizz. I'm getting the fizz.
Matt Fox: 36:50
I'm getting the fizz, are you? I'm getting the 31 special flavors, oh yeah.
August Gitschlag: 36:54
It's definitely Dr Pepper, which is a killer flavor.
Jamie Flanagan: 36:58
Okra Cola.
August Gitschlag: 36:59
It's a very good cherry Coke, all right.
Jamie Flanagan: 37:04
All right, and then the Sazerac rye.
Matt Fox: 37:07
Oh, you didn't hand it over to him. Did you get the Sazerac Rye I poured?
Jamie Flanagan: 37:10
him one. Oh, you poured him one. I took care of it. I took care of business.
August Gitschlag: 37:13
Took care of me.
Matt Fox: 37:13
Yeah, there was an episode of how they made it or the world. Built on blah, blah, blah, and it was all about Dr. That made America. Yeah, built on blah, blah, blah and it was all about that made America.
August Gitschlag: 37:25
Yeah, food that made America right oh food that made America. Yeah, great series, wasn't that a?
Jamie Flanagan: 37:29
U2 song.
August Gitschlag: 37:31
The only thing I don't like about that series. They had a whole bunch of them, but if you watch them without commercials, every commercial break you come back from they go back two minutes from the last one and rehash them.
Matt Fox: 37:48
Oh God, it makes Carlo or some shit. I know Ford decided to make coal and use those as briquettes for your barbecue back in the day, but then the recession hit.
August Gitschlag: 37:53
Yeah, we know they tried to open up. You know Fordlandia in Brazil and grow their own rubber trees. We all know that and if you don't look it up, it's a great front line.
Matt Fox: 38:08
I will tell you I I feel like I I know a lot more about history doing this podcast than I ever thought I would oh, okay, yeah all right, yeah
August Gitschlag: 38:14
all right I'm going into the uh yellowstone, so you've soaked uh, you were soaking the yellowstone uh, 15 minutes with uh the red apple. Well, I think it's just red dye, number four, yellowstone. That's all it really is.
Matt Fox: 38:27
Red dye?
August Gitschlag: 38:28
I doubt there's any flavor in this. It's just straight up RFK Jr. It's like his measles shot right here.
Jamie Flanagan: 38:38
Oh my.
Matt Fox: 38:40
I thought that was the COVID vaccine you just drank.
August Gitschlag: 38:44
It's straight up, just red dye. Yeah, it didn't change the flavor at all.
Matt Fox: 38:46
Yeah, good, I'm good.
August Gitschlag: 38:48
I'm alright. So I got my nice pour. I'm going to do it all at once now.
Matt Fox: 38:56
I just ate a buttered popcorn jelly bean. I'm going to try it with the Sazerac rye real quick.
Jamie Flanagan: 39:03
I really enjoy these. I just like the jelly bellies. I can tell you I've drank drank Cesarac rye neat while eating popcorn before that was not good.
Matt Fox: 39:10
No, don't do it. Don't do it.
Jamie Flanagan: 39:16
We got the generics here. Do we want to do the generic jelly beans with it or just enjoy them?
August Gitschlag: 39:20
That's the diabetic palate cleanser.
Jamie Flanagan: 39:24
Like I said, I was kind of noshing on these.
August Gitschlag: 39:26
Can I borrow your oempic when we're done? Fuck you. You said you lost weight. It wasn't just because of Mountain Dew motherfucker.
Matt Fox: 39:36
Yeah, it is, Can't afford that shit man, I love you, matthew.
August Gitschlag: 39:40
I don't think you're bad.
Matt Fox: 39:41
Oh, oh, oh. Ozempic no, not for me. I want to do it the right way.
August Gitschlag: 39:46
That's a waste of time. No cheating, not cheating, it's a miracle drug.
Jamie Flanagan: 39:53
All right, these are. I am sugared up, I'm going to crash hard.
August Gitschlag: 39:59
Oh, this is our childhood right here. They all taste the same.
Matt Fox: 40:02
That's. You know what this reminds me of. This reminds me of my grandmother's dish on their coffee table in the living room.
August Gitschlag: 40:09
They don't taste dusty enough. I'm sure, right, my parents would still have candy corn right now.
Matt Fox: 40:18
From 1972. Just from the past Halloween.
Jamie Flanagan: 40:22
Oh yeah, oh yeah.
Matt Fox: 40:25
Oh, wow.
Jamie Flanagan: 40:26
It does taste like grandparents', so when we did cookies, it does taste like grandparents' houses when we did cookies, when we did some cheeses and things with Miss Vino and fruits, those, I think, impacted the taste more oh yeah Than the two of the jelly beans.
Matt Fox: 40:41
Because that's natural. I don't know.
August Gitschlag: 40:42
She manipulates you into thinking you're tasting different shit.
Matt Fox: 40:44
No, the fruits and all that stuff that's natural stuff, I am.
August Gitschlag: 40:48
Oh no, these are black. These are black jelly beans, Are they Are?
Matt Fox: 40:51
they. Oh, you're in heaven.
Jamie Flanagan: 40:52
Oh yeah, they are. They looked a little purple. They're both dark purple. Okay, good, I'm glad I got some black ones for you. Oh yeah, look at you. Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, good and plenty.
Matt Fox: 41:11
Was that your nickname in college? College?
Jamie Flanagan: 41:16
See now my aunt, my dad's sister, sister Rosanna, aunt Teresa. She loved the black ones Halloween. Nobody would eat them. We'd save them all. Drop off the black jelly beans at the convent. Here you go, there's your black jelly beans.
August Gitschlag: 41:32
But she loved it, she was happy I went back for some more or maybe she hated I made that joke before you said at the convent now I feel like an asshole and it was one of those.
Jamie Flanagan: 41:40
Yeah, I got a worse.
August Gitschlag: 41:42
I got a worse, but uh, so maybe, maybe it was one of those things.
Jamie Flanagan: 41:46
She hated them, and it was just like you know the punishment to herself.
August Gitschlag: 41:50
I get it.
Jamie Flanagan: 41:52
Yeah, no, there's. Apparently there were a couple black ones in there, so right, they just look deep purple to me.
August Gitschlag: 41:58
So, gentlemen, I got an invite the other day, oh yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 42:01
To where To?
August Gitschlag: 42:01
what we're going to be returning to Whiskey Taco Foxtrot.
Jamie Flanagan: 42:08
You know be returning to uh, whiskey, taco, fox tribe.
Matt Fox: 42:09
You know when you sent that to me don't call it a comeback well, you've been there before, I have not. Oh, so I'm super excited, yes, to join you, and you're gonna share what's gonna be happening when we're there yeah, yeah, yeah, that's coming up they, because they have a, a curated uh.
Jamie Flanagan: 42:21
Is it monthly or? Quarterly monthly whiskey club yeah, they're gonna get by a delightful spaz of a woman.
August Gitschlag: 42:28
Yeah, who was a great guest and she's just so. I can't remember her name right now because I didn't prep it yeah, but she was just so good. Oh yeah, yeah, and she runs around on the stage and does all this. So we're going to be judging smoked cocktails.
Jamie Flanagan: 42:40
They're doing smoked cocktails, they're teaching cocktails and I guess they're gonna have a few contestants line up and we'll judge their smoke we get to judge someone else's drink smoking smoking the cocktail. Wow, I think we come dressed as cheech and chong and we should wear.
August Gitschlag: 42:54
We should wear, uh, our sazerak rye I'm wearing the pirate costume I wear to the cooking races with all the eye makeup and everything who?
Jamie Flanagan: 43:03
is it? Miss vino wants to see you in your eye makeup. I know she well, yeah, whatever, she makes that joke every time, but I don't know. Well, those pictures are great. You, yeah, from the uh name.
August Gitschlag: 43:15
Yeah, we should find a place to do that from live next year and just watch things go by yeah like the parade company, just be like you know it was.
Jamie Flanagan: 43:24
It was just a crap day, though, this year.
August Gitschlag: 43:26
It was fine, it was cold, it was fine, we overindulged.
Jamie Flanagan: 43:31
Really.
August Gitschlag: 43:32
Yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 43:32
Did you?
August Gitschlag: 43:34
It was early, we went early and often we got there at 10, started up at my buddy's house and was just going Well is the shipping company?
Jamie Flanagan: 43:40
They don't go by the shipping company. The shipping company tries to get people and people do go there Afterwards.
August Gitschlag: 43:44
The shipping company tries to get people and people do go there. The food at the shipping company is fantastic. You can't beat the. It's just great. They have a little bit of everything the sticky beef, and all of their units are open now.
Matt Fox: 43:56
There were two. Oh, they got all the pods are open. Yeah, every pod is open.
Jamie Flanagan: 44:01
All the pods have food in them.
August Gitschlag: 44:03
That's amazing.
Jamie Flanagan: 44:03
We're there with Kat's parents, her dad's like her as a brother who's?
August Gitschlag: 44:11
like, do you do you podcast for me? I'm like, yeah, I have it's okay. It's like, but this is like a great location like studio space isn't my thing.
Jamie Flanagan: 44:16
No, I want to the ham. The ham's bar they got the little ham yes, I was, I was I was uh drunk talking with julie um at the kaju last week. You were while you were, while you were bowling at the Kaju Most of the time we were talking at the Kaju. While you were bowling at the Kaju, we were drunk talking Because that's kind of Chinatown. Right, that was the old, it is Chinatown.
August Gitschlag: 44:36
Chuck from Peterborough will tell you that a thousand percent, it's Chinatown it is.
Jamie Flanagan: 44:40
It is Chinatown, but there's nothing architecturally left except a couple accents on the building across the street. That texturally left, except a couple accents on the building across the street. That's it. Here's my shtick.
Matt Fox: 44:52
Here's my shtick.
Jamie Flanagan: 44:55
Create the Chintiki facade on a building down there or even just on the Ham's Bar a smaller version of it. Open a Chintiki, get the facade going of the chin tiki. I was going to say it's the Founders. Somebody took over the place that was Founders.
August Gitschlag: 45:12
So I was there. It's now one of those. You wear a wristband and you get your ounces of beer and you pay by the ounce. Oh, okay, but you can only get 32 ounces before they make you go up there and talk to them so they know you're sober only is it still Founders Beer.
Matt Fox: 45:24
No, it's all Eastern Market oh it's Eastern Market Brewing.
August Gitschlag: 45:28
They had a troubled.
Jamie Flanagan: 45:29
Wasn't Eastern Market down in Eastern Market, though it is, and they also opened another place. This is three for them.
August Gitschlag: 45:35
Eastern Market Brewing, the Ferndale Project, and that's one. I had a decent sour. I had a decent bourbon barrel, but I didn't want a ton of it, so you only pay for the couple ounces you pour. Oh, that's great. And it says it's X amount an ounce. Okay, whatever glass you want, you put your wrist up there. There's a place like this in Royal Oak too. Yeah, the Royal Oak one has, like all these different craft beers, like a ton of different craft beers.
Jamie Flanagan: 45:56
And wines. That's the government tracking you.
August Gitschlag: 45:58
You know that right Government's already got a little tracker in my ass. Okay, one day I'm going to wake up and be a ninja.
Jamie Flanagan: 46:10
I can't wait. Wouldn't that be great, yeah, no.
August Gitschlag: 46:13
I'm fully tracked and I don't even care about that anymore. So let's try the Dr Pepper. I've been soaking these little suckers, all right.
Jamie Flanagan: 46:19
These beans? All right, I've been soaking these beans, those magic beans, if they make my stock rise. No shivers, jeepers, creepers, all right. So, uh, thank you for listening yeah, to us eat jelly beans. Listen to us chew. I don't know if I should go in and try like subscribe.

Jamie Flanagan: 48:12
No, you're Wilford Brimley's age. Wilford Brimley's been dead forever. Well, no, I mean, when he did, he died of diabetes, ironically enough right. One of the best lines from I'm trying to make you feel bad about your age. I'm like nine years older than both of you.
August Gitschlag: 48:27

August Gitschlag: 49:31
I hate marshmallows. I hate marshmallows.
Jamie Flanagan: 49:35
