Man Cave Happy Hour
A Journey Through Spanish Vineyards: Wines, Culture, and Exploration
Raise a glass and journey with us through the captivating wine regions of northwestern Spain as we explore the distinctive character of Spanish wines while previewing an upcoming adventure to this remarkable destination.
Our conversation uncorks with a lively tasting of traditional Spanish Cava, that crisp, refreshing alternative to Champagne that sets the stage perfectly for our vinous exploration. We delve into the heart of Rias Baixas, where the Albariño grape reigns supreme, producing wines of remarkable brightness and minerality that capture the essence of this Atlantic-influenced region.
The tasting progresses through varying expressions from Gran Bazán winery, showcasing how the same grape can yield dramatically different results when handled with different techniques. From the lighter Verde bottling to the slightly creamier Ámbar expression, these wines reveal the versatility that makes Spanish whites so compelling. As we transition to reds, we discover the surprising elegance and approachability of northwestern Spanish red blends that challenge preconceptions about Spanish wine styles.
Between sips, Mrs. Vino shares details about her upcoming wine tour through this captivating region - a November journey featuring six distinctive wineries, including historic estates dating back to the 12th century. Picture cruising along the Sil River with vineyards cascading dramatically down hillsides, exploring the pilgrimage destination of Santiago de Compostela, and enjoying the region's renowned cuisine that pairs so perfectly with local wines.
Whether you're a seasoned oenophile or simply wine-curious, this episode offers a taste of authentic Spanish wine culture that extends far beyond the bottle. The interplay of history, geography, and tradition creates wines of remarkable character at surprisingly accessible price points. Discover why this often-overlooked region deserves your attention, and perhaps consider joining Mrs. Vino for an unforgettable Spanish wine adventure this November. Matt Fox: 1:25
Yes, mothers, yes, we are Mother's Day.
Jamie Flanagan: 1:27
He's like you mothers and if you're watching on the video you can see there's a little card it says you should do a podcast.
Matt Fox: 1:35
We should do it. We should do it. Oh, you should do it. No, you should do a podcast. We should do a podcast of us drinking and laughing of us drinking and laughing. And what's it say on the inside?
Jamie Flanagan: 1:43
There's two ladies and it's like people would love us and then a big love, Augie.
August Gitschlag: 1:49
Aw that was sweet. Don't think.
Jamie Flanagan: 1:53
I'm not always thinking of you guys. There's a heart and an XO as well. Hugs and kisses, baby. That is a nice little addition to the podcast studio. Here the podcast your Voice Studio is conveniently located on greenfield road on the border of berkeley and southfield. Uh, was that? Do that sound like a spot, kind of yeah, yeah but no so, but let's make a nice addition to the podcast.
Jamie Flanagan: 2:13
Your voice studios here? Yes, it will. Uh, it's a funny little conversation piece. I know there's a lot of the ladies that record here actually a little jealous. I think they'll be like where'd you you get that Hallmark? All right.
August Gitschlag: 2:24
I'm sure they can Google, lens it and find a couple Yep. There you go.
Jamie Flanagan: 2:28
But all right. So, Kristen, you, you, we. We haven't had you back in a little bit. We were doing a little spirits last time you were here. A little saints.
Mrs. Vino: 2:37
Yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 2:37
And then this time we're loaded for bear. This is a not non-alcoholic these. And this time we're loaded for bear. This is not non-alcoholic these are oh, I forgot my charcoal pills.
August Gitschlag: 2:47
I've got them, they're right there, I took mine. You got water, I'll be right back.
Matt Fox: 2:50
I took mine Bring me two.
Mrs. Vino: 2:52
Yeah, go grab.
Jamie Flanagan: 2:53
Yeah.
Mrs. Vino: 2:53
Yeah, there's some. In my bag there's two bottles I already charcoaled up.
Jamie Flanagan: 3:00
Yep, I'm so good, I'm ready to go, but this time Spanish wines. Yeah, you're going to travel us through Spain through these bottles right now, but you're actually going to take people on a tour, so let's get just a Spanish introduction. Yeah Right, you always like to start with the bubbly.
Mrs. Vino: 3:23
I do. That's why I'm holding this Safety first.
August Gitschlag: 3:27
Everything we say has to be in one place, do you? Have to do the Catalonian stuff.
Matt Fox: 3:32
Do you have pills in your mouth?
August Gitschlag: 3:35
España. Even the English words have to have this now.
Mrs. Vino: 3:40
It's not that heavy of a list.
Jamie Flanagan: 3:41
We'll get a welcome cocktail here. Not a cocktail, it's just some cava. Have a list, so we'll get a.
Mrs. Vino: 3:43
we'll get a, uh we'll get a welcome cocktail here.
Matt Fox: 3:44
Yeah well, not a cocktail, welcome bubbles some welcome hang on, hang on, I'm gonna pass me that mouse there, uh, mr, uh flanagan that's not a mouse.
August Gitschlag: 3:52
Oh, you mean that mouse?
Jamie Flanagan: 3:53
oh, that was a nice pop that's a good pop, that's a that's like one of the better pops we've had yeah, so we're gonna start with um some cava.
Mrs. Vino: 4:01
So cava is a traditional Spanish sparkling wine.
Jamie Flanagan: 4:05
Oh, okay, so it's nice and dry. Yes, it's dry, because it can't be called champagne unless it's from Champagne France.
Mrs. Vino: 4:10
Yes, you've got it, guys. You've got it. You know your stuff, you can set it down. It's a sommelier's nightmare, when people hold their glasses.
Jamie Flanagan: 4:18
Let me hold that. Come on, I got that for you. Come for you. Come on, razzle, dazzle.
Matt Fox: 4:24
Nadine's chiming in for you, Miss Kay.
Mrs. Vino: 4:28
Oh hi.
August Gitschlag: 4:29
Mama.
Mrs. Vino: 4:29
Mi madre.
August Gitschlag: 4:31
Happy Mother's.
Jamie Flanagan: 4:32
Day. Happy Mother's Day that was my mom on the phone. She just got her.
Mrs. Vino: 4:37
Mother's Day flowers. Like an hour ago Fantastic, she was very, very excited. Thank you.
August Gitschlag: 4:44
None of your other siblings were thinking of her today.
Mrs. Vino: 4:46
Yeah right, all right. So cheers guys.
August Gitschlag: 4:49
Cheers. This is cava. What's the distinct difference between this and the frog sparkling wine?
Mrs. Vino: 4:57
The frog. The French the frog sparkling wine the frogs.
August Gitschlag: 5:01
You ever heard the French call the frogs? No, what.
Mrs. Vino: 5:04
No, it's probably so, the frogs no.
August Gitschlag: 5:06
Am I the?
Matt Fox: 5:07
only one here.
Jamie Flanagan: 5:08
I think you're on an island right now. You're ethnically disparaging the French by calling them frogs. Yes that's all.
August Gitschlag: 5:16
Come on, get your racial insults together Frog wine versus you know European Mexican To answer your question different grape varietals.
Mrs. Vino: 5:24
So Cava traditionally consists of Shirello Macabeo. Those are like the two biggest grape varietals, but Champagne will have Pinot Noir, chardonnay, pinot Meunier.
August Gitschlag: 5:36
This tastes nothing like Champagne.
Mrs. Vino: 5:38
No, it's going to be a little bit more crisp.
Matt Fox: 5:40
It's Cava that's actually very sweet. It's very sweet, you think so. And it's aava that's actually very sweet. It's very sweet, you think so. And it's a brute. I think so. On the back end it is. Yeah, I was going to say it's 11.5% alcohol.
Mrs. Vino: 5:50
So it's I mean it's dry.
Matt Fox: 5:51
It's dry, but it's got a sweet finish.
August Gitschlag: 5:53
Well, it's a scene in the Blues Brothers. He's like shaking his glass at them.
Matt Fox: 6:01
That was in honor of our pope. You know, the pope? How much for the women did, they do a center of the center of life.
August Gitschlag: 6:07
Do a pope scan I don't know, I don't think so, I think so still too new I don't think so. Oh, there was. There was plenty of jokes and there's some weekend update jokes yeah, yeah, all right, I didn't, I don't, I don't watch.
Mrs. Vino: 6:19
I was in bed by then yeah, I got up at very early peacock, you old, you just watch it.
August Gitschlag: 6:25
Yeah, peacock there do we get?
Jamie Flanagan: 6:29
we just got old and you're only like a month older than him. Yeah, just a month.
August Gitschlag: 6:35
Yeah, but you lived a whole lot, whole different life than me. You're not wrong.
Jamie Flanagan: 6:39
Three ex-wives 17 children, three ex-wives, 17 children.
Mrs. Vino: 6:48
He's pretty much the old lady in the shoe If there's a knock on the door, I'm like okay, welcome to the family, come on in, come on in. Yeah so Cava, that's a very classic Spanish sparkler.
Jamie Flanagan: 7:06
But I want to move us to and I want to specifically highlight. So do we want to talk about the vineyards first, and this is where you're going to these yeah well, so hang on.
August Gitschlag: 7:11
Hang on the breaks price point on this. Versus a champagne of the same kind like what? What's your price? We're looking at a bottle of voodoo. Look at a bottle of white star. What's our comparison here?
Mrs. Vino: 7:21
So a bottle of that specific Cava. It's probably around 20, maybe 20.
August Gitschlag: 7:29
All right, so that's not a super high end. You're jumping over your Okay.
Mrs. Vino: 7:34
That's easy.
August Gitschlag: 7:34
This is something you could absolutely replace your Spumante with on New Year's. That's exactly what I was targeting there, exactly yeah.
Mrs. Vino: 7:42
Cava is not something that's. I mean, a lot of Spanish wines are not expensive. I mean there are some out there that are have got some really good aging qualities on them.
Matt Fox: 7:54
You like it August.
Mrs. Vino: 7:55
Oh, you do, I do.
August Gitschlag: 7:56
I want to make sure I like it. I'm going to try it.
Mrs. Vino: 7:58
Yeah, yeah, make sure, make sure, some more, right I?
Jamie Flanagan: 8:01
wasn't positive. I do, I'm a thorough person.
Mrs. Vino: 8:05
You have to have a second taste.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:07
It's precise and cold. Here's the problem with the Podcast your Voice studios. We have limited refrigeration. We have an ice machine that spits out ice at a fairly good click, but there's no true refrigeration. This is nice and icy cold.
August Gitschlag: 8:23
Thank you, I'm a professional.
Matt Fox: 8:23
Usually this is nice and nice icy cold. You're welcome.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:24
Thank you.
August Gitschlag: 8:25
You're welcome. I'm a professional. She knows what she's doing. Usually, I just have to rely on my cold heart.
Matt Fox: 8:29
Yes, Come on, you got the warmest heart.
August Gitschlag: 8:32
I did bring you a card today, didn't I? You did? Yeah, you did you did. That's why. But yeah, so what do we want?
Jamie Flanagan: 8:36
to talk about? Do we want to talk about the bottles? Do we want to talk about the vineyard? Do we want to talk about the trip?
Mrs. Vino: 8:50
We're going to talk about everything. Can we do the trip with?
Matt Fox: 8:55
each bottle that you're going to go to? Yes, so do the trip with the bottle that you're visiting yes.
Mrs. Vino: 9:06
So, grand Bazin, so this winery is one of the wineries that we're going to be going to in November and, if you're interested in booking your seats, because it's going to be very intimate, it's at least 12, and then I'm capping it at 25 people.
Jamie Flanagan: 9:16
Okay, all right.
Mrs. Vino: 9:17
But Grand Bazin, so you can actually find this. I know that Quintoro's in Plymouth they carry this. I had this on my wine list at the Wine Grotto, so Albarino is the grape. Have you had Albarino August?
August Gitschlag: 9:32
I have not.
Mrs. Vino: 9:33
No, okay, I just know there's no way Kat's going to.
August Gitschlag: 9:35
Let me go on an intimate trip to Spain with you.
Mrs. Vino: 9:37
Oh, not that kind of intimacy, not that kind of intimacy.
August Gitschlag: 9:43
I like to play with words.
Mrs. Vino: 9:45
I love it. So Albarino is a Spanish varietal and it is very, very popular in northwestern Spain and Rias Baixas, so Rias Baixas is where we're going to be traveling.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:00
This is a regional. Is this going to be sweet?
Mrs. Vino: 10:02
No, this is not. It smells like it's going to be.
Matt Fox: 10:07
It feels like before I even go there. It's like it's going to be very dry for me.
Mrs. Vino: 10:15
Oh yeah, baby.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:16
Now that I switched it around a little bit, yeah, so this one's like I said what do you think, what do you guys think?
August Gitschlag: 10:23
So I was mentally misled. It looks to me like a German bottle like a bottle of. Peace.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:30
Porter Riesling.
August Gitschlag: 10:31
It's like what we usually see in that style of bottle.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:33
And that's why I was like getting that in my mouth.
August Gitschlag: 10:36
It was in my head, before I even drank it, that it was going to be sweet, and it's not.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:39
No, it's not at all.
Matt Fox: 10:40
The nose was to me though the nose was, then I swirled it also had the color it was really clear and crisp and it's, it's, very, it sits on the top of your, uh, the top of your mouth, the top of your palate, it's, it's, it's got a dryness to it.
Mrs. Vino: 10:53
Yeah, no, it's. Albarino is one of the is there enough?
Jamie Flanagan: 10:57
is there enough to it? Is there?
August Gitschlag: 10:59
is there enough in there for all of us? Yes, yes, yes. And then I have another bottle.
Mrs. Vino: 11:02
So this is this one's going to have a little bit more creaminess factor to it.
Jamie Flanagan: 11:09
Is this supposed to be light? It is Very light. It's very light. It's very light.
Mrs. Vino: 11:13
In Spain because, as you know, it's tapas, so you know small bites small plates of food. So you know, when you go out to excuse me, Ria Spicius and you're out, you typically do not pay for food. When you go out to the restaurants, when you go to these small tapas bars, you pay for your wine. The tapas just come as you order wine which is a really cool concept.
Mrs. Vino: 11:36
Yeah, so northwestern Spain, that's where we're going. Riaz Baisas, it's just north of Portugal, and Grand Bazan is one of the wineries that we are going to that's neat.
Jamie Flanagan: 11:48
Yeah, and these are available metro detroit, they are.
August Gitschlag: 11:51
Yeah, it looks like a $20 bottle of wine, um I think yeah, it's right around 20 somewhere that's easy. That's easy, it's doable.
Mrs. Vino: 11:59
Yeah, they're not, it's like I said spanish wines are.
Matt Fox: 12:02
What would you pair this with, food-wise, then?
Mrs. Vino: 12:04
Tinned fish.
Jamie Flanagan: 12:08
What they serve.
August Gitschlag: 12:08
This at the bar downtown by Comerica Park.
Jamie Flanagan: 12:11
Yeah, right, if people were thinking about why do they change seats?
Matt Fox: 12:15
it's because those guys were threatening eating tinned fish, tinned fish, sardines and what have you.
Mrs. Vino: 12:22
Tapas, tapas. There's a lot of so ria spices, it's mussels uh scallops. You have octopus bring it lady I'm in on that.
Jamie Flanagan: 12:32
Yeah, I'm in on that, I'm just not.
August Gitschlag: 12:34
I'm just homer simpson going into the bushes, right, yeah sorry, august, that's all right and then, oh, and then. This is fun, bring me a wine I can pair with cheeseburgers, all right.
Matt Fox: 12:47
Those are red coming up.
Mrs. Vino: 12:48
All right, I'm kidding, I'm kidding, I'm kidding. So the tempranillo, that actually would be really good.
August Gitschlag: 12:53
Learning how to eat tapas and Spanish food is an art. Um, I was. I was brought into a spanish small plates restaurant in chicago by a friend of mine who was a spanish teacher, long-time spanish teacher. We sat down. Well, you know no, barry mulso, oh you know, barry.
August Gitschlag: 13:06
So barry and his one of his best friends are teachers, oh yeah, and I'm like looking at this menu like I don't know what any of this is, and they go, don't worry, we'll order for you. It was one of the best meals I've ever had in my life and I couldn't tell you what any of it was to order it again it was all fish.
Matt Fox: 13:20
No, it wasn't all fish.
August Gitschlag: 13:21
They know me. They know me, they know how to feed me. My people know how to feed me. But it was, and this tin fish is a craze. I'm going to say it's a craze.
Jamie Flanagan: 13:36
It's making a hell of a comeback in the States. Put it that way, it's a sea rations.
August Gitschlag: 13:41
It was it was how you stored crappy food, you know was in these cans. So now, yeah, spam, but the tin fish thing is making a real like a snobbery move in the. In some places Tokoro has a tin fish night now.
Mrs. Vino: 13:54
Ok, really Royce in downtown Detroit.
August Gitschlag: 13:57
Yeah, yeah, they have that, so elephant room was doing it a couple years ago before uh, before nate left for california, he was doing tin fish there yeah, that's the thing.
Mrs. Vino: 14:05
It's a thing it's.
August Gitschlag: 14:06
Yeah, it is I'm excited for all of you we won't crack them open august.
Mrs. Vino: 14:11
I'll see. I'm excited, I'm excited them.
August Gitschlag: 14:13
I want to see you eat them like my dad eating pickled herring out of the jar on new year's eve every year, just dropping them down his throat yeah, while'm sitting there like, can I have some more popcorn?
Mrs. Vino: 14:21
Jesus. Mary and Joseph. That was my opah. It was herring and onions. As a child I'm talking like five years old I liked it.
Matt Fox: 14:29
I ate it.
August Gitschlag: 14:30
They didn't chew any, but they just swallowed that stuff. Liverwurst is my jam. I'll stink up a room of liverwurst all day. That's the only.
Matt Fox: 14:37
German thing about me Listen, I will go and have a sushi.
Jamie Flanagan: 14:40
I'm a fussy, fussy.
Matt Fox: 14:41
I will go have sushi and I will embarrass myself with the octopus and the sushi.
Jamie Flanagan: 14:45
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Mrs. Vino: 14:47
See, now sashimi is the raw stuff right, it's all raw, but it's just a big chunk of raw. It's just a big chunk of raw.
August Gitschlag: 14:59
But no, I mean. Well, here's the irony. I really enjoy sushi. I hate seafood, but I like sushi.
Mrs. Vino: 15:04
I know I like sushi. You like super clean, fresh, I like super clean fresh tuna and salmon.
August Gitschlag: 15:09
I love it. It's so good and clean to me Years and years ago.
Matt Fox: 15:12
I'm doing some swordfish. Years and years ago we had a bad experience. All right, okay, so I didn't eat sushi for like 15 years until I went to one place here in the Metro Detroit area and I heard a bargain and and asshole.
Jamie Flanagan: 15:29
Zing.
Mrs. Vino: 15:30
Zing. Where's the bell? Ring the bell, there it is.
Jamie Flanagan: 15:32
Yeah, that was weak. It had a cord. It was supposed to be weak there it is.
August Gitschlag: 15:38
You get a half of that. So is my joke.
Matt Fox: 15:41
What's next?
Mrs. Vino: 15:42
All right, so Gran Bazon. So this is another Albariño, but this one is Etica Ambar, so amber in reference to the glass where this one was verde green. Okay, so this one's going to have I mean, it's very similar to the verde, but you're going to see a little bit darker color. And this one's got a little bit more creaminess to it, but it still is nice and crisp.
Matt Fox: 16:05
So the word creaminess and wine the nose is familiar.
Jamie Flanagan: 16:09
yeah, Creaminess with wine.
Matt Fox: 16:11
Just help me understand what that's going to feel like Creaminess with wine.
Mrs. Vino: 16:15
Like butter.
Matt Fox: 16:17
Yeah, on your tongue Like butter.
Mrs. Vino: 16:19
Almost like a texture. It's a texture, it's a texture. Is there a?
Jamie Flanagan: 16:22
little more oils in this. Maybe Is that legs? Do you look at the legs of the wine?
Mrs. Vino: 16:27
Yeah, this has got some legs on it, I do sometimes oh yeah there's oils in there absolutely.
Jamie Flanagan: 16:32
So we're all about the legs with the. I'm a leg man myself. I'm a leg man myself. But no, in the bour, the bourbons, we're usually looking at the.
Matt Fox: 16:41
We're looking at the oils that are hanging on to the side of the glass.
Jamie Flanagan: 16:44
I forgot to do that on the first pour there.
August Gitschlag: 16:46
It is a wholly different taste. It is a fuller flavor. I don't know, is that what the creaminess is? It's like a fuller flavor to it.
Mrs. Vino: 16:53
You got it Okay.
Matt Fox: 16:54
You got it.
Jamie Flanagan: 16:55
There's more. Like I said, was very, very light. There's a little more to this.
Mrs. Vino: 16:59
Yeah, this one's got a little bit more.
Jamie Flanagan: 17:00
This is what I wanted. I wanted a little more.
August Gitschlag: 17:02
So these two will be at the same.
Jamie Flanagan: 17:06
You want more, did they say they'd get you off the drugs? No, they said they'd give you more.
Mrs. Vino: 17:09
Mas vino para mi.
Matt Fox: 17:12
There's more. Are these two going to be at the same winery that you're the first stop? Well, they have the same fucking label on them Fox.
Jamie Flanagan: 17:23
We almost made.
Matt Fox: 17:24
Jamie, I just flipped you off.
Jamie Flanagan: 17:25
You're the nearest fit to it.
Matt Fox: 17:27
See, I wasn't paying that close attention until I turned around and then asked the question. I'm like, I'm an idiot.
Mrs. Vino: 17:34
Are those glasses just cosmetic for you? Are you just trying to be cool? I love you, Matt Fox.
August Gitschlag: 17:40
I want to do a podcast with my friends and drink and laugh and people will love us.
Matt Fox: 17:44
I am blind as a bat. Listen to me.
Mrs. Vino: 17:48
Yeah, so Grand Bazin is one of the wineries that we're going to, and then there's five other wineries that we're going to be visiting.
Jamie Flanagan: 17:56
So while we sip on this fella, Matt, can you hand me that that guy? I want to look at the label. I want to, I want to look at the label. Yeah, look at the label, the legs, and so this is one of the you're going to go. You're visiting six wineries, yeah, so how long of a trip is this? What do you have in store for folks?
Mrs. Vino: 18:11
yeah, so it's um. It's four nights, five days so november 3rd through november 7th, and we're staying at santiago de compastela, which is a very large pilgrimage site actually, and and we're staying at Santiago de Compostela, which is a very large pilgrimage site actually, and we're staying at the Parador de Santiago, which is right there in Santiago de Compostela.
August Gitschlag: 18:32
Do they have a local soccer team? Do they have a local? What A local soccer team? If they do, bring me a sticker.
Mrs. Vino: 18:37
You know what they might? I'll tell you this. Why this?
August Gitschlag: 18:39
weekend was El.
Mrs. Vino: 18:40
Clasico that Brazil game Bring me a sticker.
August Gitschlag: 18:42
You know what they might. I'll tell you this why.
Jamie Flanagan: 18:44
Because this weekend was El Clasico Barcelona versus Real Madrid.
Mrs. Vino: 18:45
That Brazil game, because where we're going it's very Celtic influences, like lots of Celtic influence.
August Gitschlag: 18:53
Spain is still soccer nuts, no matter what I know Well.
Mrs. Vino: 18:55
Madrid does very, very well. This weekend was Real.
August Gitschlag: 18:58
Madrid versus Barcelona, so I'm sorry, barcelona.
Mrs. Vino: 19:02
Very, very well, this weekend was Real Madrid versus Barcelona. Sorry, barcelona. Yeah, barcelona, what's your name? Barf what's your name?
Matt Fox: 19:04
Barf, your whole name, barf, all of you. Yes, got it All right.
Jamie Flanagan: 19:10
So, when you go, you're going to be in one hotel or one place and then venture out from there on the days. Okay, because my wine country experience is limited to.
Mrs. Vino: 19:21
Michigan.
Jamie Flanagan: 19:22
Mm-hmm. And our wine country, which I love, mine's limited to. Like Ferndale, I love doing the Michigan wine.
August Gitschlag: 19:33
I have some gay friends with wine in the fridge. The Michigan wine tour. I love doing the.
Jamie Flanagan: 19:39
Michigan wine tour. What? Traverse City, right, and then you go, yeah, you go one place and then, well, we usually try to go a little outside of Travers, and then you know, hit the, hit the different wineries do, maybe two days and then hit a couple of different places. So that's kind of what this is, except in Spain, yes, uh, so you're going to be in one place and then vent, keep cutting you off. So this is uh. How do you pronounce this again?
Mrs. Vino: 19:59
Gran Bazon, gran Bazon, yeah, gran Bazon.
Jamie Flanagan: 20:01
All right, so is this a little sketch of the Gran Bazon. It is yeah, have you been to uh this portion of Spain before.
Mrs. Vino: 20:08
I haven't. Okay, this is a new thing for you I'm a virgin.
Matt Fox: 20:17
I'm sorry I'm a little slow on the uptake.
Jamie Flanagan: 20:25
It's an intimate tour so that won't last long. Grand Bazon, how many? You said four days. I'll fit them for you.
Mrs. Vino: 20:29
Yeah, so four nights and five days.
Jamie Flanagan: 20:31
Okay.
Mrs. Vino: 20:31
Yeah, so, and then we're going to be going to Adega Alguera Winery.
Jamie Flanagan: 20:36
Are any of these famous for something that we should know?
Mrs. Vino: 20:39
a lot of these wineries because my, my business partner. It's a. It's a family-owned uh vacation company and they've been providing global travel to um, you know very beautiful resorts all over the world for 35 years. The parents are retiring. The son took over. The son is a huge wine connoisseur, found me I I'm I'm assuming he probably googled me like you did.
Jamie Flanagan: 21:02
I'm not sure. Probably was a. He's an avid listener of the man cave. Yes, he probably is Jared.
Mrs. Vino: 21:07
this is a this is a shout out to you. Jared and Kelsey Kelsey. Thank you so much for putting this all together.
Mrs. Vino: 21:14
I appreciate you so very much. So, yeah, yeah. So they've been doing so. This is not their first rodeo, they've been doing this forever and they have actually people in Spain where we're going, um, and they have personal relationships and connections with a lot of these wineries, cause I said I just want to choose a couple, see if you can get into those, and they at least got Grand Bazin, which I'm super pumped about, and then the other ones you know they have relationships with. So a lot of the wineries are going to be newer to me.
August Gitschlag: 21:44
To try, but, I've looked at all their wines and they look great, you could be naming a relief pitcher from the 87 Padres and I think it's a winery. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Mrs. Vino: 21:53
Aurelio Gordonez has.
Jamie Flanagan: 21:55
Oh yeah they're great, that place is great.
August Gitschlag: 22:02
He was a good left-hander. Batty III Grand Bazan From the Dominican Republic. I'll buy it.
Matt Fox: 22:08
Sure.
Mrs. Vino: 22:09
Speaking of tinned fish, we're going to be doing a muscle tour.
August Gitschlag: 22:12
I'm not opening these Augie I go to Kaju Cafe all the time. I'm used to the stanch.
Matt Fox: 22:18
Muscles are amazing.
August Gitschlag: 22:21
I would know I don't have any. You need to go to the stanch. Muscles are amazing. I would know I don't have any.
Matt Fox: 22:25
You need to go to the gun show. I know.
Jamie Flanagan: 22:29
That's the gun show over there. Flabby old men over here.
Mrs. Vino: 22:36
Put those away.
August Gitschlag: 22:37
There's no licensing in here. No open carry in here, Carlson. No open carry. Put the guns away. There's no licensing in here. Let's go to no open carry in here, Carlson, no open carry.
Mrs. Vino: 22:45
Put the guns away. I'm licensed man. But yeah, Muscle Boat Tour too, and some of these wineries that we're going to.
Jamie Flanagan: 22:54
It's going to smell great. It's going to smell fresh. Hit it.
August Gitschlag: 22:57
If you want to eat that stuff, get it. I go to Keju Cafe every week.
Mrs. Vino: 23:01
I'm cracking it. I brought toothpicks too.
Jamie Flanagan: 23:05
I would do one of those Sardine I wouldn't do why.
Matt Fox: 23:11
Because I worked in a pizza place. I get that.
Jamie Flanagan: 23:15
Olives and sardines are ruined for me after working in a pizza place, Black olives specifically. Greens too. Delicacy a pizza Black olives specifically. Greens too.
August Gitschlag: 23:23
Delicacy from heaven. They're wonderful. Muffaletta olive spread is the best thing ever I had a muffaletta at Bellflower.
Jamie Flanagan: 23:31
But I'm a little bit of a fussy and Ypsilanti.
Mrs. Vino: 23:34
It was killer. I love a good muffaletta Killer. Shout out to Bellflower. Catherine has modified it.
August Gitschlag: 23:39
It's hard to find the bread around here. They have muffaletta bread, so we just make muffaletta subs. Let's get that olive oil and everything to soak into the sub bread, it's still just as damn delicious.
Mrs. Vino: 23:50
I don't know if they make their own bread there, or if they get it from Zingerman's, it might make their own, but it's hard to find good muffaletta bread.
Jamie Flanagan: 24:02
I'm sorry we're holding you up. You guys are eating mussels what?
Mrs. Vino: 24:02
else One of your days is going to be a mussel tour. Yeah, mussel boat tour, mussel boat tour.
Matt Fox: 24:06
Are they going to shuck their own?
Mrs. Vino: 24:08
No, so you don't shuck mussels.
Matt Fox: 24:13
You don't shuck mussels, I'm thinking oysters.
Mrs. Vino: 24:17
I am bringing my bodyguard.
August Gitschlag: 24:18
Okay, nice, he's going to be the mussel show, I wonder. No, I am bringing my bodyguard. Okay, oh, nice.
Mrs. Vino: 24:21
So he's going to be the muscle show. Yeah, so he'll be the muscle show, I wonder. I'm wondering how he's going to be received in a foreign country, because you know just here, and there.
August Gitschlag: 24:30
Well, he wears the Wolverine costume.
Jamie Flanagan: 24:31
He'll be really well received Will he fit in any of the cars is the thing.
August Gitschlag: 24:36
Will he fit in the cars? I don't think he's getting the cars. I don't know, getting his Mini Cooper and let's go with this Renault. We're just going to have to buy a motorcycle. He's got the moonroof open.
Jamie Flanagan: 24:45
He's got his head out. He'll be better off on a motorcycle.
August Gitschlag: 24:48
Yeah, because the scooter will bottom out and I don't know if the Fiat can fit his head out of the sunroof. Yeah, yeah, he got it, but yeah, a nice.
Matt Fox: 24:57
Reminds me of the Flintstones. All of a sudden, what's that really?
August Gitschlag: 24:59
high-end Italian motorcycle company Harley.
Matt Fox: 25:02
Davidson.
August Gitschlag: 25:04
Ducati, ducati's one. There's another one too, but yeah, that's what Ducati. Yeah, that's a look, you two on a Ducati.
Mrs. Vino: 25:09
Yeah, it's got to be a cruiser, though, man, I don't do the crotch rockets. I have my cycling doors.
Matt Fox: 25:15
Yamaha.
August Gitschlag: 25:16
Yamasaki. No, there's a.
Matt Fox: 25:17
Kawasaki.
August Gitschlag: 25:18
No, our guest last week has one, oh no, a vintage one, so I'll get to it. Yeah, I was going to say, look it up, look it up.
Mrs. Vino: 25:26
So yeah, muscle Boat Tour, one of the vineyards that we're going to be going to, I think it's the Adega Alguera, it's on the Sill River. I got to look, hang on. Oh wait, no, it's this one, amadas Donas. That one's on the Sill River and the vineyards, you guys, they're slanted, so they come down and in the middle is the river. Oh, okay, so they actually have a vineyard river boat tour.
Jamie Flanagan: 25:54
Oh wow, which I mean. How crazy is that right? Will you guys be doing that? Yeah, oh yeah, we're doing that too. Creepers, creepers.
Mrs. Vino: 26:01
I know. So there's going to be lots of boats involved, some really steep vineyards. We're going to some really cool restaurants. Nova, which means no go in Spanish.
August Gitschlag: 26:13
Moto Guzzi? That's how I was thinking of it. Yes, it does.
Matt Fox: 26:16
What is it?
August Gitschlag: 26:16
Moto Guzzi.
Matt Fox: 26:17
Moto Guzzi Moto.
August Gitschlag: 26:19
Guzzi.
Matt Fox: 26:20
Is that?
August Gitschlag: 26:20
Italian, it's Italian, it's a vintage Italian.
Mrs. Vino: 26:23
Oh, okay, okay, Performance motorcycle. See, I just like, I like Indian and Harley.
Jamie Flanagan: 26:28
I'm a Thai American girl, I get it.
Mrs. Vino: 26:31
Yeah, so Sill River, we're going to do a boat tour.
Matt Fox: 26:33
So the river goes through the winery itself, through the vineyard. A river run through it.
Mrs. Vino: 26:38
Yeah, a river runs through it.
Matt Fox: 26:39
Yes, oh, bread pit, I feel like fly fishing all of a sudden.
Jamie Flanagan: 26:46
Yeah, all right, where else?
Mrs. Vino: 26:48
Oh my gosh. And then, yeah, there's a couple other. So one of the days it's kind of like free flow, because you know I like things kind of laid back. I don't want to have a heavy itinerary. I mean, our itinerary is very full for what we're doing.
Matt Fox: 27:06
Sure.
Mrs. Vino: 27:06
But one of the days guests will have options, so they can either come with me to Bodegas de Palacio de Fafinanes, so Palacio de Fafinanes is one of the wineries. It's the palace of that family. That is either a 12th or 17th century winery. We're going to be going to two wineries that are very obviously very very very old, or people can go explore on their own, or they can go do a spa day If you want to come with me or go do a spa day.
Jamie Flanagan: 27:39
It's going to involve some wine anyway.
August Gitschlag: 27:40
It's going.
Jamie Flanagan: 27:41
People can go explore on their own or they can go do a spa day.
August Gitschlag: 27:42
So if they want to come with me or go do a spa day, yeah, or you know it's going to involve some wine anyway. Yeah, it's going to involve wine, anyway. It's about location, location, location.
Matt Fox: 27:46
You had me at 12th century, I know.
Jamie Flanagan: 27:49
I know it's crazy. Is that all the wineries?
Mrs. Vino: 27:56
No, no. So that's another one that we'll be going to, and we're going to tap into some of the reds soon, because Spain is known for their Tempranillo. I know August loves Tempranillo and has made some of his own.
Jamie Flanagan: 28:09
I burned it, but I made it. That's what I was going to ask Because, like Michigan, our wine country, the whites do better than the reds.
August Gitschlag: 28:17
They do. Well, that's just our climate. We have a German Bavarian type of soil. The reds in. Well, that's just our climate. We have a german bavarian type of soil, even though we're on the same in michigan, parallel whites do. The reds are getting better in michigan. They're stealing enough.
Mrs. Vino: 28:26
Little difference, yeah because in where we're going it's the 42nd uh latitude and then up north at traverse city.
Jamie Flanagan: 28:34
It's 45 right, right, 45th parallel. So it's so this region that the region that you're going to, was going to be my question. Are they more known for the whites?
Mrs. Vino: 28:42
Are they more known for the red? Yes, albarino, albarino grape is the one that dominates that area. Ok, albarino, because there's like two of them.
Jamie Flanagan: 28:51
There's lots of wine spaces and places in Spain.
Matt Fox: 28:55
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah so you're just hitting one.
Mrs. Vino: 29:00
Yeah, we're hitting concentration.
Jamie Flanagan: 29:02
So you're just hitting one concentration of it.
Mrs. Vino: 29:04
Yeah, I mean, there's so many beautiful areas of Spain, you know, like South. No, this one's going to be so this one's called Four Monkeys. So there's so many different wine-growing regions.
Matt Fox: 29:20
I called you a monkey All right just making sure I heard you.
Jamie Flanagan: 29:23
That was the original name of this podcast.
August Gitschlag: 29:25
So we fired that other asshole and I'm here.
Matt Fox: 29:28
Now you're in, we're back Cheeky monkeys, oh you cheeky monkeys, I love it, I love it, I love it.
Mrs. Vino: 29:35
So yeah, so this one's called Four Monkeys, so this one's a little bit lighter. I put a little bit of a chill on it just because I like it with a little bit more of a chill on it. I'd have to look at the varietals in here, but this one's definitely a.
Matt Fox: 29:51
I said it smells sweet. And you automatically Chris, you're like wait, wait, wait. But for me, just on my nose, it just was going to be a very sweet smell.
August Gitschlag: 30:02
This is not a full jammy or luscious wine at all. It's very light. It's very light and drinkable, wow. I wouldn't be surprised if Catherine would put a couple ice cubes in this in the middle of summertime.
Matt Fox: 30:19
Yes, wow, that's a tasty treat I'm.
Mrs. Vino: 30:21
Yeah.
Matt Fox: 30:22
That's a tasty treat. I'm sorry, I just got a summer red.
Jamie Flanagan: 30:25
It's a summer red. Yeah, it's a light.
August Gitschlag: 30:26
It's a light, it's well, it is actually chilly in Spain, so I can see how they wouldn't want.
Mrs. Vino: 30:31
Well, where we're going it is. Oh, it's going to be in the beginning of November. The highest temperature will be maybe 68, oh wow.
August Gitschlag: 30:44
I didn't know that was a thing in. Spain. I thought it was like just all you know 90s and yeah.
Mrs. Vino: 30:49
I did not know the. Iberian Peninsula got chilly yeah, it's definitely not like Madrid or Barcelona or, you know, catalonia it's totally different, totally different climate.
August Gitschlag: 31:03
But yeah, the Formanos it doesn't make any sense. I mean, the climate's the same everywhere in America politically or what it takes to long for you guys to know politically religiously, economically we're talking about climate here, matt, why you gotta get weird. This is not that kind of podcast.
Matt Fox: 31:20
I know it's not, I'm just bringing it up.
Mrs. Vino: 31:22
I'm looking at the varietals in here keep your cyber truck to yourself, fox yeah, keep it away from my big gas guzzling dod, I would be found dead in one of those things.
August Gitschlag: 31:34
I saw a red one on the way over here.
Jamie Flanagan: 31:35
Yeah, I've seen the red one, is it like?
Matt Fox: 31:39
metallic.
Mrs. Vino: 31:40
Yes, it's gross looking.
Matt Fox: 31:42
It's terrible.
Mrs. Vino: 31:43
Is it?
Matt Fox: 31:43
glossy.
August Gitschlag: 31:43
It looks like a shirt I used to wear to the club in Windsor back in.
Matt Fox: 31:46
you know, Remember when you used to draw a car when you were a child. It still looks like that you should draw a car when you were a child. It still looks like that.
August Gitschlag: 31:54
It does.
Matt Fox: 31:56
No, that's like a Lego built car.
August Gitschlag: 31:59
That's what they look like it's like a kid, sent it to Matchbox and said no, and Musk said yes.
Mrs. Vino: 32:05
Oh, I guess. All right, so this is going to be a good match. All right, we're going back to the bridal guys Got a match.
Matt Fox: 32:12
All right, bring it back.
Mrs. Vino: 32:13
And a little bit of Syrah and Chiaraninha. So that's why this is a little bit of a pleasure.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:22
I'm getting like the Did you think it was going to be a sweet no, no, no. And the nose. I'm getting like I don't know if they're earthy, maybe the stems or something. I'm getting definitely Not quite wood, like when you're talking wood and bourbon, but I'm thinking like earthy, the stemmy in the field.
Matt Fox: 32:42
Like the stem of the cherry, almost, or the grape stem the vines.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:47
I'm getting the vines. Am I getting the vines?
Mrs. Vino: 32:49
You're getting some French oak.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:50
Oh, am I getting. French oak yeah, this is fermented in stainless steel, but then they do put it in some French oak so you're getting them, oh, okay, and that's where you get, like the dryness yeah.
Mrs. Vino: 32:59
Afterwards the tannins. All right, yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 33:02
I'm getting the earthy woody, but not, like in the bourbons, earthy woody. These are different feels altogether. That's why I'm struggling. I'm using bourbon terms on wine and it's a different game, but they're fitting.
Mrs. Vino: 33:19
Yeah, I was going to say you guys have the palate.
Jamie Flanagan: 33:21
It's like the stems.
August Gitschlag: 33:23
Not a bad way. These two have the palate. I just have the smartest comments.
Jamie Flanagan: 33:26
I don't have a palate, I just search for things. What are you talking about?
Mrs. Vino: 33:31
You're the only one here who actually makes his own wine, yeah, but I do that to show off.
Matt Fox: 33:36
When I drink this. I almost want a really nice juicy porterhouse or a ribeye. Well, not necessarily this one.
August Gitschlag: 33:44
I'd like a much more full-flavored wine for a meat like that.
Matt Fox: 33:49
I want some grapes and cheese with this guy.
August Gitschlag: 33:51
This is definitely a summertime wine, like when my girlfriend goes to a bar in Hollywood, florida, and it's 85 degrees out and since we're riding the bike for 20 minutes, she goes give me your red wine. The bartender goes no, this is much lighter, it's a little more refreshing. It's not the face full that some red wines Maybe. That's what we're used to here.
Jamie Flanagan: 34:13
Is she getting?
August Gitschlag: 34:14
mouthfuls of red box wine.
Matt Fox: 34:16
I don't know what it is. I've drank you know the red, the Beaujolais, the French wine that's out there. And that fits really well with a nice steak, or what have you.
Mrs. Vino: 34:26
So that would be so that grape varietal is Gamay and we actually here in Michigan grow Gamay.
August Gitschlag: 34:32
So that grows Well. That shirt brings out the Gamay in his eyes.
Matt Fox: 34:36
Thank you, it's salmon.
Mrs. Vino: 34:39
Yeah, so this one Augie, like look at the cork on this one.
August Gitschlag: 34:43
There's some earth in that one. Yeah, You're going to like you guys will like this.
Matt Fox: 34:46
Oh, are we going to chew on it?
Mrs. Vino: 34:48
No, you're going to drink it.
Jamie Flanagan: 34:50
Well, this, so this is actually so this is aster burn it, put it on your cheeks, be a hobo for halloween? Oh you could. I used that was my costume, like all of grade school. It was like burn a cork, put it on your cheeks stick with a red bandana.
Mrs. Vino: 35:06
You're a hobo I was a clown once.
August Gitschlag: 35:10
You're so poor you couldn't afford real makeup. You had to use use old cigarette butts.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:14
Yes, Grew up in the city. Man, it was hard times.
Mrs. Vino: 35:18
Cinderella, Cinderella.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:20
It was hard times, man.
Matt Fox: 35:21
Don't you remember Bozo the Clown? He was a hobo man.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:25
Right, so we were still painting on the walls, too, right?
Mrs. Vino: 35:28
I'm old, I'm right behind you, you guys aren't old, I'm keeping you all young I'm keeping you all very young.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:39
Jamie's the youngest, so I'm on this tour, right? So this isn't. Did they spangle the English over there? How are you? How are you with Spanish?
Mrs. Vino: 35:52
I have taken all four years of high school.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:56
Right, right.
Mrs. Vino: 35:56
Two years in college.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:57
So you don't know None of that means shit anymore.
Mrs. Vino: 35:59
I've got all that too, Like when I get there. I will get into it. Ok, cool, you'll pull. You can pull some more yourself.
August Gitschlag: 36:06
Yeah, all right.
Jamie Flanagan: 36:15
But if somebody is like I don't know spanish- I don't.
Mrs. Vino: 36:16
All I know is my downtown english. Uh, are they gonna be okay coming on this tour? Are you gonna be able to pull them for war? No, I'll be able to you know if you need food here wine. Uh, your hotel right, left, north, south, east, west, that's all you need nito, oh beto please.
Jamie Flanagan: 36:32
Oh, that's just not gonna work yeah as yeah, and then america, we get all like say it louder, and with a bad cultural slur.
Mrs. Vino: 36:43
It's like, no, we've got. We've got great, great people who are gonna be um on site with us.
Jamie Flanagan: 36:50
So that's good, so you have. So, if somebody doesn't know, that's not a blockade for somebody to go on this trip and plus like I said.
Mrs. Vino: 36:58
so, santiago de Compostela, it's a huge pilgrimage site, so that just rolls off your tongue. Once I drink a little bit more yes we're going to see the blessed miracle carcass of what?
August Gitschlag: 37:07
Well, no, it's in the shape of the Virgin Mary or something Like what's going on?
Mrs. Vino: 37:12
No, no, so it's. It's just there's lots of cultural diversity there. All right, Well, if there's a pilgrimage.
August Gitschlag: 37:17
It's a pilgrimage is religious.
Mrs. Vino: 37:19
It is so what are they going?
August Gitschlag: 37:20
Is it a you know when the Moors took over? Is it a spot where?
Mrs. Vino: 37:24
somebody laid some no, like I, like I's, nor it's well that's all like pagan stuff.
August Gitschlag: 37:33
So what's that?
Mrs. Vino: 37:33
actually it is. So if you do a little bit of research on on the short, catholics call it pagan.
August Gitschlag: 37:39
It was there, it was that they called catholicism was you know their religion was pagan, so it's not like you know.
Mrs. Vino: 37:44
Yeah so it's um. Like I said, there's there's definitely.
Matt Fox: 37:47
What climate are you in right now?
Mrs. Vino: 37:49
some druid influences there.
August Gitschlag: 37:52
Yeah, it's um, it's my 23 andMe said I had some druid in me.
Mrs. Vino: 37:55
Druid Great A druid princess oh my.
August Gitschlag: 38:00
God A druid princess.
Jamie Flanagan: 38:03
It's like space balls.
Matt Fox: 38:05
I was going to say where's space balls? Great, that's all I need. A druid princess, oh my gosh. Thank you, Mr Porni.
August Gitschlag: 38:12
So there's going to be some stone formations and things like that. It's probably, you know, some mounds of some sort like old Well you know what I mean. Like, like, that's what they, that's what those locations are the pagan altar-ish stone formations.
Mrs. Vino: 38:26
I know that they're like crop circles. No crop circles there.
August Gitschlag: 38:30
That's right. Those are aliens. That's not real.
Mrs. Vino: 38:34
That's in arkansas no, it's everywhere, it's everywhere um, all right, who's ready for the deep, dark ride?
Matt Fox: 38:40
we are all right.
Jamie Flanagan: 38:43
Before you do that, I'm gonna have another muscle oh yes muscle from a brussels. Don't eat my stick. One for me, man. You want one? Yeah, stick one for me, let's see uh, if I can stomach it.
August Gitschlag: 38:52
I want to see you put that muscle in your mouth, jamie you're gonna like it, they're not the first time I've heard that they're so tasty.
Mrs. Vino: 38:59
There you go, jamie. Oh, we should have grabbed some napkins y'all.
August Gitschlag: 39:03
It's gonna drip oh, it looks like an alien life form yeah, I know I was gonna pull the tin up to my mouth a little bit more.
Mrs. Vino: 39:13
Are you gonna grab some napkins Now? You're going to smell like.
August Gitschlag: 39:16
You oily fucker.
Mrs. Vino: 39:17
You're going to smell like muscles, muscle oil.
Matt Fox: 39:20
I can't wait to get home tonight.
August Gitschlag: 39:22
We did. Because I came in late, I did not have everyone's napkin. I always give everybody napkins for their drinks. That's my fault for being here like five minutes to seven today.
Jamie Flanagan: 39:33
The cat's going to be following me around the house going what up, though.
Matt Fox: 39:38
My cat is going to be all over me this evening.
Mrs. Vino: 39:41
Oh yeah, you don't even have to get the peanut butter out of the dog, you already have the muscle oil. So this big boy, that I have for you guys, this one's going to be Tinta del Pais, meaning Well, it's.
August Gitschlag: 40:02
Say it like a total Yankee dick bag.
Mrs. Vino: 40:07
It's a tint from Pais.
August Gitschlag: 40:09
Okay.
Mrs. Vino: 40:10
So it's just red.
August Gitschlag: 40:12
Look at that color. I already love it.
Mrs. Vino: 40:14
I know you do.
Matt Fox: 40:15
Just looking at that color, I'm like, oh, I need my crest white strips, like right now.
August Gitschlag: 40:22
It'll be fine. Now I want that porterhouse.
Mrs. Vino: 40:26
I just cooked up some. I grilled up some ribeyes before I came over here, and I ate a whole one.
Matt Fox: 40:31
Awesome.
Mrs. Vino: 40:32
With all of the fat on it, I don't waste any of it.
Jamie Flanagan: 40:37
It's going to be a healthy poop tomorrow.
August Gitschlag: 40:39
It was, uh, I'm telling you, I love a good BM, so yesterday.
Jamie Flanagan: 40:43
Yesterday was a mother's day and, uh, colin usually takes Colleen out for dinner and I I'm usually off with my mom, but but colin was like, uh, you know I'm having it's. It's a thing, do you mind? We just come over and eat at your place and he goes, I'll bring some steaks or something colin's like that'd be wonderful he's in his like mid-20s right, he's 27 yeah, so you know tough times right now yeah, well, he just uh. You know he had a big financial burden.
Matt Fox: 41:10
Yeah, he's like, can we?
Mrs. Vino: 41:16
just do Steaks were?
Jamie Flanagan: 41:17
expensive.
August Gitschlag: 41:18
We could have gone to.
Jamie Flanagan: 41:19
Morton's for what he paid for. They were like they were good.
Mrs. Vino: 41:22
They had a lot of fat on them.
Jamie Flanagan: 41:25
We had some killer steaks yesterday too. We had some nice red wines with it too.
Mrs. Vino: 41:31
Spain they have really good beef over there, do they? It's not just all seafood.
Matt Fox: 41:36
Now, that's a great. Yeah, that is a red wine.
August Gitschlag: 41:40
I know, that is the other one wasn't a red wine. I don't disparage it because it's not Just because people are into the fuller luscious things. It was a lighter red wine. It's a lighter red and unless you know what you're getting into you, open it up and be like oh, this isn't going to be good. No, it's exactly what it's supposed to be. That's the thing.
Matt Fox: 41:57
When you talk full-bodied red wine, that's what this is right here. This is what you would pair with, because the oils and the legs on the glass right now with this, they are not.
Mrs. Vino: 42:25
I don't think he was he was too in tune with that. But the more like sounds great the more legs there are, the more alcohol there is. So, this one is 14 and a half.
Jamie Flanagan: 42:37
So it's streaky, the more streaky it is. See, now we had one. We had a bourbon the other day. That's Redwood Empire right. Yeah, and I thought there were no legs on it. But the thing was it was just a solid sheet. It was so oily that it just really stuck to it.
Matt Fox: 42:58
It coated the glass it was bourbon.
August Gitschlag: 43:01
We have a bourbon version of you that's going to start coming on the show now.
Mrs. Vino: 43:05
Bourbon babe.
August Gitschlag: 43:07
No, she's gentry. She's her own name.
Jamie Flanagan: 43:11
Another firecracker, good it's the Three St.
Mrs. Vino: 43:14
Another firecracker. I love that Good. You guys need it. It's the Three Stooges and the Queens.
Jamie Flanagan: 43:18
We did one episode.
August Gitschlag: 43:19
Eventually we'll cross the streams, Not just yet. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 43:25
Wait a minute, are you?
August Gitschlag: 43:26
calling me the Queen. Don't cross the streams, Ray.
Jamie Flanagan: 43:29
We got to get our friend Tanya Cole back on. Yeah, we do sarah from the flavor journal you'll love sarah from a flavor journal.
Matt Fox: 43:36
She's down in st louis, she's, she's got great things.
Mrs. Vino: 43:39
Yeah, she does great, louis. That's where I was born yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 43:42
So and I I just, yeah, turn it over to have a thing, turn it over to ladies and we'll just sit over there and drink and they can have fun I'm down.
Mrs. Vino: 43:51
I mean we can give me a microphone in the peanut gallery over there.
Matt Fox: 43:56
That reminds me of me learning how to DJ all of a sudden. I'm not afraid of that idea.
August Gitschlag: 44:00
No, I'm not either. We'll run you trays of booze and let you guys talk about it. Watch this conversation disintegrate over time after shots of whiskey.
Jamie Flanagan: 44:09
Make sure everyone has a DD. What's this guy called?
Mrs. Vino: 44:12
again that we're drinking here Aster, how's your?
Jamie Flanagan: 44:16
Aster been.
August Gitschlag: 44:19
At the bottom of the third, everyone the Tigers are up 11 to nothing. Oh wow.
Jamie Flanagan: 44:23
Nice. What do they think they are, the Padres?
Mrs. Vino: 44:26
Yeah, were they playing Padres?
Jamie Flanagan: 44:27
Who do they think they are the?
Mrs. Vino: 44:28
Padres.
Matt Fox: 44:29
They're playing the Red Sox. Get them Get them.
August Gitschlag: 44:32
Sorry to jump in on that. I think they are the Padres. They're playing the Red.
Matt Fox: 44:34
Sox Get him. Get him, Eat him up. Tigers Eat him up Wow.
Jamie Flanagan: 44:38
Is this the?
Mrs. Vino: 44:38
same region. So this one is. I gotta look and see.
Matt Fox: 44:45
So is this a winery? But?
Jamie Flanagan: 44:46
this is just another wine you brought in for a variety, to have something dark after these slightly lighter, so you're not visiting this one.
Mrs. Vino: 44:53
No, not that one. These right here Pasamelos Say pasamelos por favor. There you go, we'll get you speaking.

Mrs. Vino: 45:13
Oh, thank you so much, Matthew Fox.
Matt Fox: 45:15
You're welcome. I appreciate that. And his first rodeo.
Mrs. Vino: 45:17
Yeah, it's mrsvinocom. So mrsvinocom, slash Spain, or just go to mrsvinocom. I have a pop-up. We have 175 days until we leave Full deposit will be through. August, but who's counting?
August Gitschlag: 45:34
Yeah, uh, full deposit will be, but who's counting august? Yeah, I, I mean, I literally have a countdown on my website.
Mrs. Vino: 45:37
I would too. I would too, my dear, because I cannot freaking wait.
Matt Fox: 45:40
You guys can you say the cost for?
Mrs. Vino: 45:42
yeah, so it's um, it's it's three thousand eight hundred dollars per person, it's, um, you know, double occupancy. If you're going on your own, it's a little bit more. And then, obviously, trips like these airfares never included, because I don't know where people are flying.
Matt Fox: 45:57
OK, that's fair.
Mrs. Vino: 45:59
But, that includes four nights, five days, six different wineries. You know we're going to a couple different restaurants. Nova is a Michelin star restaurant and then we're going to restaurant. They, those race.
August Gitschlag: 46:14
It's a tire company.
Mrs. Vino: 46:15
It's Michelin, I know it is.
Matt Fox: 46:17
Hey, if you listen.
Mrs. Vino: 46:18
If you look at the history of that, it's very interesting.
August Gitschlag: 46:21
I'm sure it's incredible, but I'm just being a dick.
Mrs. Vino: 46:24
No, no, no, there's like conspiracy theories behind it.
Jamie Flanagan: 46:26
Can they throw your name around at the airline to get a little break there?
Matt Fox: 46:33
Unfortunately I'm not that cool, I was searching for a little, I know I wish um. That's like saying hashtag mad cave happy hour, you're gonna get something off yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, you can I do that, you're uh, you'll be on a no fly list all right not using that take away your real life. They'll be like hey.
Mrs. Vino: 46:52
They'll be like hey, aren't you on that one podcast? And I'll be like no, no, that's not me?
Matt Fox: 46:56
that's not me.
August Gitschlag: 46:57
No, it's be not you know, miss vino, that's a lady, all right. I'm mrs vino. That miss vino's a whore.
Mrs. Vino: 47:11
I'm like yeah, lady.
Jamie Flanagan: 47:12
Who is this? Prank call, prank call.
Mrs. Vino: 47:15
I own a square of Scotland.
August Gitschlag: 47:19
And I got a star somewhere too, with a name oh, man oh my gosh All right.
Jamie Flanagan: 47:24
So 38, and then that gets you your hotel and all the trips. Everything the boat rides yes.
Mrs. Vino: 47:31
Everything.
Jamie Flanagan: 47:32
The magic fingers in the bed.
Mrs. Vino: 47:35
Everything. There's no magic fingers.
Matt Fox: 47:37
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, Wait, wait, what?
Jamie Flanagan: 47:39
All right.
August Gitschlag: 47:40
If it doesn't come from me, it's creepy.
Matt Fox: 47:44
I know we were talking spa days earlier, but come on man, there is an optional spa day.
Jamie Flanagan: 47:51
My family took a trip to California. It was 1975. There was all six of us piled in. How we digress, yeah, lincoln Town Car, my dad's big old Lincoln driving, and then the hotels and you put the quarter in the bed and you had the magic fingers.
August Gitschlag: 48:07
Oh God, I mean, that's where he was going with this. Okay, okay, you know.
Mrs. Vino: 48:11
Jamie, I know what you're talking about because I've seen it in so many horror flicks.
August Gitschlag: 48:15
I've only seen it in like Wes Anderson movies. It's real or Wes.
Jamie Flanagan: 48:17
Anderson. Well, my parents traveling with four kids on teacher salaries, that's the hotels we stayed in.
August Gitschlag: 48:25
Hey that's cool man.
Mrs. Vino: 48:26
Hey, you know what?
Jamie Flanagan: 48:32
You got to travel you.
Matt Fox: 48:33
Roll them up.
Jamie Flanagan: 48:35
My dad was like I don't believe in jukeboxes. Well, it's right there. He's like he wouldn't give us quarters for the jukebox.
Matt Fox: 48:44
But it was the finger machine.
Mrs. Vino: 48:46
That's what it was there for I don't believe in jukeboxes.
August Gitschlag: 48:51
It's like the tooth fairy or something, yeah, yeah, he's a. He didn't want to pay the money.
Jamie Flanagan: 48:55
He's a you're watching the budget.
Mrs. Vino: 48:57
Your dad was watching the budget, just watching the budget. Your dad was awesome awesome, beyond awesome.
Jamie Flanagan: 49:02
Just watching the budget on that trip watching them well, that's it oh, and then they let, so they uh. My sister, she brought like this massive eight track player, like this big-ass boombox-y 8-track player thing. 8-tracks, those travel well, right. And so we're trying to schlep all six people, all our clothes, all the way to California and back.
Mrs. Vino: 49:25
In the station wagon In the town. Car, yeah, from Michigan to Cali and back. How many days?
Jamie Flanagan: 49:32
We went up through the Badlands and then back down.
Mrs. Vino: 49:35
Oh, I went to the Badlands. It was fun it was a riot man.
Jamie Flanagan: 49:38
It was a good time. It was snow in the Yellowstone Park in the middle of summer. It was good stuff, but it's cold in Spain. Where are you going?
August Gitschlag: 49:46
That's where you're going at. All of that was to get to it's cold in Spain. No, I was trying to bring him he's a different kind of wine drunk than he is a bourbon isn't he?
Matt Fox: 49:54
this segways I come out of this man.
August Gitschlag: 49:56
It's a whole different it's a whole different smile on his face while he's talking and I was I was, at least it's not tequila, okay tequila makes my pants fall off exactly actually hang on, I know. Like and subscribe. It does All your podcast places.
Mrs. Vino: 50:17
Yeah, so actually the equivalent. So tequila, that's, you know, mexicano, right? Arrujo is a Spanish pomace brandy distilled spirit made from the fermented residue of grape skins, so it's kind of like the Italian version of a grappa. So grappa is the same, so arujo is made from the grape skins, the grape moss, and that is there, that's Mexican moonshine. So that is there.
August Gitschlag: 50:43
Yeah, that's like whatever sugar is left in the grape skins. They're fermenting it and it's no flavor, just moonshine. It's organic material that is fermenting.
Mrs. Vino: 50:50
Yeah, and you drink that before you eat during, you eat after you eat. Have you had grappa before?
August Gitschlag: 50:59
Once and I swear it's the only time I ever had to have a filling was because it took the enamel right off my teeth.
Mrs. Vino: 51:05
Wow, you must say it has some very strong grappa.
August Gitschlag: 51:09
It was back in the old neighborhood oh.
Mrs. Vino: 51:12
Did someone make it? Yes?
Jamie Flanagan: 51:15
it was probably somebody's 55 I think it was clear.
Mrs. Vino: 51:19
To be honest, it's clear grappa is clear, depending on the varietal it's italian moonshine, yeah yeah, essentially yeah, they take every culture has their moonshine.
August Gitschlag: 51:29
They're distill it. They just just distill it and then go whoa, you want to put the poultish? Just use a lot of heavy syrups. You go to the short X, you'll see the grape syrups and the raspberry syrups because they just distill it and they just like the 151s and stuff like that.
Mrs. Vino: 51:47
They just put the syrups in it.
August Gitschlag: 51:48
They cook it down so it has some flavor to it.
Mrs. Vino: 51:50
But man, they cook it down so it has some flavor to it, but man it's just raw booze.
August Gitschlag: 51:55
Yeah, yeah was the norwegian version of it, you know now they flavor it now they age in barrels, so it gets some flavor, but yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 52:01
So the mrs, mrs vinocom, is humming and singing. You gota new website is a fresh, pretty face on that uh and so people can know it's well hers.
Matt Fox: 52:13
Oh, I thought she had an intern, or something, the website herself.
Mrs. Vino: 52:15
I do it, man. I've got a background in IT. I thought you were secure.
Jamie Flanagan: 52:20
That's where people go if they want to find out more about this Spanish adventure.
Matt Fox: 52:24

Jamie Flanagan: 52:50

Jamie Flanagan: 53:32
I shouldn't be fuzzy, Eh no.
August Gitschlag: 53:34
It's just the cameras. I'm also lit like an asshole Camera twos a jerk Bad lighting and no makeup, and just terrible.
Jamie Flanagan: 53:43
It's that soft focus. I don't need that at all, I'm not very old. It's that, sybil Shepard, soft focus.
Mrs. Vino: 53:49
I don't need that. I'm not Sybil Shepard.
Jamie Flanagan: 53:52
You can take the Vaseline off the lens you can moonlight as something else.
August Gitschlag: 53:57

Matt Fox: 55:03
It's, uh, it's november 3rd through the 7th? Oh my gosh, as that's close. So when do they have to sign up by for a guaranteed slot?
Mrs. Vino: 55:13
yeah, so, um, the full deposit will be due in august. Um, just to book your seat, it's fifty dollars okay um, and if for some reason we do not go, maybe there's another blackout or brownout, that $50 will go towards another trip. And this company, this, this business partner that I have, they have, uh, four or three other trips happening around that same time. One is in mexico, one is in spain, another one is, um, in north um or, uh, southeastern spain. So they're constantly, they constantly have trips. So so, $50 deposit, that's not bad.
Jamie Flanagan: 55:55
And then obviously.
August Gitschlag: 55:56
No, it's not. I've got to figure out how to jack Dawson this trip.
Mrs. Vino: 56:00
