Man Cave Happy Hour
Aromatic Adventures with Smoked Cocktails - Episode 199
Have you ever wondered if smoking cocktails is more than just a bar trick? Join us for a spirited chat in the Man Cave Happy Hour, where I'm Jamie Flanagan, sharing laughs and lively discussions alongside my co-hosts August Gitschlag and Matt Fox. We take on the smoky cocktail debate head-on, questioning whether this trend is a genuine flavor enhancer or simply a gimmick, akin to those party store signs claiming bourbon is cheaper than divorce. With humor and camaraderie, we regale you with stories from our dabbling in home smoker kits and the art of pairing whiskey and cigars.
We dive deep into the smoky world, unraveling the intricate process of creating smoked cocktails with wood chips and butane torches—it's not as easy as it seems! As we muddle through finger-stirring techniques and the occasional butane mishap, our banter never wavers. From smoky old-fashioneds to the quirky nuances of various wood chips like cherry and pecan, our quest for cocktail perfection is filled with fun tales and unexpected revelations. You might even discover why electing a new Pope came into play as we explored the theatrics of smoke.
Finally, prepare for some lighthearted musings as we chat about everything from glamping to the curious magic of smoke lingering in glassware. Our conversations take whimsical turns, from playful debates about the olfactory senses to the joys of smoky cocktails in winter and beyond. With local flavors and personal anecdotes, we keep the laughs coming and the stories rolling, promising a cozy listen that captures the essence of smoky cocktails and the joy of sharing them with friends.

We're going to drink a fine whiskey and smoke a really fine cigar.
Jamie Flanagan: 0:25
It is time for Happy Hour. The man Cave Happy Hour Whiskey, cigar, spirits, the stories that go along with it.
August Gitschlag: 0:31
I am Jamie Flanagan Go ahead oh we stepped on each other already in the opening.
Matt Fox: 0:37
It's okay, we can step on each other. All we want, that's August Gitschlag.
August Gitschlag: 0:40
That's Matt Fox over there. Hey Sexy, hey, yeah, sexy.
Matt Fox: 0:44
Foxy yeah, thank you for that Sexy Foxy. Yeah, we got a lot of stuff happening on the table.
August Gitschlag: 0:47
Get the camera here, man. There's some stuff on the table, buddy.
Jamie Flanagan: 0:50
We're smoking it, smoke it. If you got them today, I feel smoked out.
August Gitschlag: 0:54
Well, we might. We got butane torches and all kinds of dangerous things.
Matt Fox: 1:00
I'm a little late to the party when it comes to smokers. I do not own a smoker, all right, okay. So I'm interested to see what you guys come up with here, because my son-in-law has a smoker at home, so I'm just kind of shopping, if you will, right?
Jamie Flanagan: 1:14
They can get very complicated Really. The one I have is a little complicated. You brought the entire bar. There's another one there is. Hey is a little complicated. You brought the entire bar and there's a. There's another one.
August Gitschlag: 1:25
There is um all right, yours is hey, Jamie, yours is bigger than mine. Never heard that outside the hotel before everybody you've all seen the the trend of smoking cocktails. I'm still not convinced that it makes a huge change. I think it's a bar gimmick myself, I think it's. It just looks good, looks cool. It's something fun to do, right? Does it change the flavor of what you're drinking?
Matt Fox: 1:48
I think it's minimal at best it's for the nose. I don't think it's for the juice in the glass. I think it's more for the nose part yeah.
August Gitschlag: 1:57
I mean sure, but that's supposed to affect your taste buds, right? Sure, yeah, sure, yeah, it's supposed to have an effect on it. I I've had maybe three smoked cocktails in my life and I was like great, I paid you eight bucks more so you could, I could watch you put on a fucking magic show.
Jamie Flanagan: 2:11
Yeah, you know, but really most of the places they're not, uh, exponentially more expensive okay you know, at the places I've, I've. I might be exaggerating by saying eight bucks more, but you know, you know maybe two, three okay okay, uh, these are both home kits.
August Gitschlag: 2:24
They were both gifted to us.
Jamie Flanagan: 2:26
Yes, this was a gift, as I got this for christmas. Mine comes a little traveling bag.
August Gitschlag: 2:30
Oh mine. This comes in a cardboard box that had a smash corner from amazon delivery. Yeah, this was a one of my the continuing the trend of august 50th birthday presents and I figure, smoke them, smoke them if you got them, so yeah, um, all right, but uh, so it.
Jamie Flanagan: 2:45
I was hanging out at the house, right, we're digressing, okay, and and so colleen's yelling up at me up up the steps she's like hey hey, do you ever, you ever get a feeling, uh, a ripping feeling through your body like, uh, someone's torturing a voodoo doll and I'm like, no, she's well.
August Gitschlag: 3:01
How about now, oh wife's got a voodoo doll how cute anyway, so those of you that are listening, I got more like subscribe.
Matt Fox: 3:14
Leave a comment before Jamie tells anymore.
Jamie Flanagan: 3:16
I got another, so driving I was driving down 13 right here, right by the podcast, your voice studios, on the lovely border of Berkeley, michigan and Southfield, trying to sell that Berkeley angle.
August Gitschlag: 3:33
I drove through downtown Berkeley on my way here.
Jamie Flanagan: 3:35
It's trying to draw them Berkeley folks in, anyway. So driving down 13 miles through lovely Berkeley is a party store and they, you know, they put their changeable copy size. I know they're always trying to put something whimsical up there. Sure, and it was funny. It said and this is, this isn't a joke it really said it said bourbon because it's cheaper than divorce, and I'm like all right, I'm like oh, that's funny, the bourbon I drink Because actually it's the only way around it Anyway.
Matt Fox: 4:10
So in that vein, and I can, make jokes like that, because Collie doesn't listen. Hey, jamie, I'll get away with it.
Jamie Flanagan: 4:18
She don't listen.
Matt Fox: 4:19
Hey fellas, hey fellas. What did the naked man say to the elephant?
Jamie Flanagan: 4:25
You were doing these earlier.
August Gitschlag: 4:26
Did you ever spend time in a Turkish prison?
Jamie Flanagan: 4:29
How do you eat with that thing? Did you have to look that up? No, not at all.
David Wright: 4:35
I thought you were looking that up and reading it.
Jamie Flanagan: 4:37
Are you serious? I just didn't know. I didn't know. All right, but anyway, I had those two jokes in the back pocket and I wanted to get them out before I forgot them. But no, that cracked me up. It was like bourbon. Because it's cheaper than divorce, that's good.
Matt Fox: 4:51
And.
Jamie Flanagan: 4:51
I was like, yeah, okay. And then I'm like, wait a second, you don't know what kind of bourbon I drink All right, I think they're pretty expensive.
August Gitschlag: 5:00
Oh, they give you. They gave me recipes and shit, oh yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 5:03
So we have two different. But the smokers can get very, very complicated and there's some like there's a big glass box and you put the drink in the glass.
August Gitschlag: 5:11
That's the one you see at the restaurant. They do the presentation for you. These are home kits.
Jamie Flanagan: 5:15
Yeah, and then because I was going to go, because I was looking for one like yours, because I did this one at home and I didn't, anyway, well, this is all going to go into a Crown royal bag when I get home.
Jamie Flanagan: 5:26
This is going to get stored from now on, but I was looking for one like that and I was at. I went to the fancy mall, the Somerset collection. It's not a mall, it's the collection, yeah, but it was like it was like a hundred bucks and I'm like Because I was looking at it was like 30 bucks at wal, walmartcom.
August Gitschlag: 5:46
What's your brand name? What's your brand on here? Sir so mine's Omkin like pumpkin with an A it's.
Jamie Flanagan: 5:54
Smokeboards is the brand. Smokeboardscom Interesting yeah it comes with a travel bag. Smokeboards.
August Gitschlag: 5:59
So talk about what comes inside your kit, what came in yours?
Jamie Flanagan: 6:02
So there's a whole like eight by eight, uh square well milled piece of wood, yeah, a big, nice, solid, and it's got the etched logo on it, not cutting board quality. There are three sizable containers of uh wood chips. What are? Your flavors there, so I got cherry. There's apple and pecan okay, all right.
August Gitschlag: 6:24
What's your little glass there?
Jamie Flanagan: 6:25
so, and here's the thing, here's where it gets complicated, right. So there's a jar with a lid. It's a like a, like a can like a. So, yeah, there's a jar with a with a lid, yeah and uh. So the process is you take the, you take the chips and you put them on your board and you start the fire. You make your cocktail in another glass, oh, or you make your cocktail in the. You're like trapping a fart.
Jamie Flanagan: 6:53
You put the glass over the smoke Over the smoke, capture it, then pour your drink in, then seal it. Let it absorb it for a moment or two, oh yeah, let's do yours first. That sounds dumb. Right, it sounds dumb and right sounds dumb. It sounds really freaking stupid. Uh, so capture the smoke in the jar. Uh, pour your drink into the jar, swirl to infuse the smoke and then pour smoke drink into glass over ice, enjoy.
Jamie Flanagan: 7:18
Uh, so yeah well so I don't know you're going first matt put pull my camera and point it down while I do this. Uh, apple or pecan. We got buffalo trace. I got buffalo trace. I got I'm going to go apple Apple.
August Gitschlag: 7:33
Well, I've got. You have pants?
Jamie Flanagan: 7:35
on. So I have a different kit.
August Gitschlag: 7:36
Because I got orange bitters. So I have a different kit. It's a whole different method. And I'm doing old-fashioned. I have pecan cherry, as do you, but they're small. Yeah, they're much smaller. Yeah, little samples. I have beach, I have apple, and then I have pear and oak. Huh, I'm going, I'm going cherry, I'm going cherry, so yours, mine is a whole different setup. Like my whole idea on this one is you put this little, so I have this little lid right With the holes in it.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:08
Right. Are you smelling anything in the wood? I'm not smelling anything?
August Gitschlag: 8:12
Is this cherry? You put this little fire condom in here.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:14
Yeah, okay, a little little basket.
August Gitschlag: 8:17
Tasket, a basket. You put whatever chips. Well, we'll do that, but it's just a whole different setup and the whole idea is like, when it's done, you drop this little sucker on there and let it smoke into the glass.
Jamie Flanagan: 8:26
So before I set the roof, the roof, the roof on fire, I'm going to make an old-fashioned. So I got some sugar. I don't have simple syrup. I'm going to do, I'm going to go rock it. Old school, that's sugar in the raw Sugar.
Matt Fox: 8:43
sugar for me big boy, yeah, you gonna finger bang it too.
August Gitschlag: 8:50
Oh no, he has a stir stick, and then we got some Fee.
Matt Fox: 8:55
Brothers. Orange, bitters, that's the non-alcoholic one right Fee Brothers.
August Gitschlag: 9:02
I don't know. I thought they all had a little smidgengen I think that's the non-alcoholic I don't know check it check check it out the goddamn window
Jamie Flanagan: 9:09
what are you trying to kill me with this? All right, and then you, you're supposed to.
August Gitschlag: 9:16
You know that the that muddles the sugar in look at you muddling in the, in the thing, a little bit muddling and meddling. You wasn't for you meddling, meddling kids.
Matt Fox: 9:25
Oh, yep, I guess there is alcohol flavors.
August Gitschlag: 9:29
This one has open flame on a wooden board. How do you get to burn wood on wood? Yeah, I don't know. This is a little different to me. Right? You got a fire extinguisher in here by law.
Jamie Flanagan: 9:37
Yeah, this building. We don't have an elevator in this building. This, this building. We don't have an elevator in this building. This is so. This building, I think, is so noncompliant.
Matt Fox: 9:48
Don't say that out loud.
August Gitschlag: 9:51
So is our broadcast by FCC standards.
Jamie Flanagan: 9:55
Should I just make two? I'm just making two, and we can divide it three ways.
August Gitschlag: 9:58
That's fair. Okay, all right.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:01
Yeah, because we don't need it. We got a second cocktail there, all right, all right. Yeah, because we don't need it, we got a second cocktail there, all right. So I got the cocktail poured in this glass, did yours?
August Gitschlag: 10:10
come with recipe kits. I have recipes in my instructions they gave me recipes for Dulce Lola Sweat Pam. I dated her in college.
Matt Fox: 10:21
Is it Dulce or Dulce?
August Gitschlag: 10:23
Dulce Lola, fine, yeah, I'm a in college. Is it Dulce or Dulce? Dulce Lola, fine, yeah, I'm a troglodyte. Capitano Felipe and old-fashioned smoker Whiskey, bitters, ice, cube sugar, cube orange peel cocktail cherry.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:37
Yeah, all right, all right. So there you go. So the cocktail is made, the sugar never really. The roof, the roof, the sound of a torch.
August Gitschlag: 10:49
The roof is on fire.
Jamie Flanagan: 10:50
I forgot to bring the paper towel in here, all right.
August Gitschlag: 10:52
I got it. Oh yeah, we didn't clean things up, did we?
Jamie Flanagan: 10:54
And then my Bring a wet one too, just in case. Then my torch and my kit wouldn't take the butane. Did it tonight when Matt tried to no, kit wouldn't take the butane. Did it tonight when Matt tried to no, Matt, it wouldn't do it.
Matt Fox: 11:04
I thought it was just me.
Jamie Flanagan: 11:07
I never have. I have the worst luck with the butane torches. So I went and I tried to buy some more butane, because I had a thing of butane at home and I tried filling that and I'm like, okay, well, maybe it was just old butane, I don't know, that's even a thing. So I went and I went to the local smoke shop and I purchased. So you light your cigarettes.
August Gitschlag: 11:27
Yeah, yeah, yeah, mine worked. Matt got mine to work right away. I've never Not a smoker, never been a butane or lighting a Zippo type of guy. My middle name's Pyro.
Jamie Flanagan: 11:39
I was having a difficult time with it. Keep that paper towel nice and close to the wood and the flame.
August Gitschlag: 11:44
That's why I said make it wet.
Jamie Flanagan: 11:46
That's a good idea. He did we got alcohol on it. So now I burn the wood is what it calls to do. This just seems like I'm glad there's not a fire suppression system.
Matt Fox: 11:56
There's a little smoke coming off of it.
August Gitschlag: 11:58
You're supposed to turn that thing. Get that thing, catch that smoke.
Jamie Flanagan: 12:12
H that thing. Get that thing, catch that smoke, hover with your other hand. It's supposed to hover that jar over that fucker. There you go. Yeah, catch that fart. There you go right over the top. All right, so now I've burnt the wood and the jar is. Use the torch to burn light wood chips.
Matt Fox: 12:20
Capture the smoke in the mason jar which it looks like it's capturing fairly well yeah now are you gonna pour smells nice?
August Gitschlag: 12:28
I would bang it around a little bit. I can smell. Yeah, you're right, yeah does it smell cherry? Yeah, no, it doesn't just smells like like a fire, like the fire alarm.
Jamie Flanagan: 12:34
Yeah, yeah, I saw, I'm a little worried about actually, but there's, I don't, there's, I don't know I mean, it's not like it's thick, it's just all scented I put uh, I put like air uh masking tape over the sensor. No, no, no, no, no, no Sound dampening foam above the ceiling tiles. And as I was up, you know do above the ceiling tiles back when I did that there, there, there isn't Jack for air for any kind of all right, All right, so now that's, that's full.
Jamie Flanagan: 13:00
And then it says pour your cocktail, you're going to lose a little smoke into your cocktail, into the glass. I don't know, that's what I'm saying. I'm not enamored with this.
August Gitschlag: 13:12
There's barely a fart left in that jar.
Jamie Flanagan: 13:14
Catch that fart, swirl it around, get a swirly. Do we even want to yeah?
August Gitschlag: 13:28
Thanks to Firebird Tavern. Our glassware sponsor, Catherine, is working their opening day and we all have tickets to their tent. Any one of us can walk in now. I like it. Us is the collective man cave-offs, yeah man cave-offs I like that.
Jamie Flanagan: 13:41
I like that. All right, so the stuff is in there. We've shaken it around.
August Gitschlag: 13:51
We put our ice in our glasses. Dong, dong. The resonance of the glasses and microphones.
Jamie Flanagan: 13:55
So I've got. Well, there's still smoke coming out of that right.
August Gitschlag: 14:01
Over a nice cube you know what we should have done. We should have a little, get a little plastic glass, if you can grab them, so we can taste regular buffalo trays next to it and see if there's any difference. Well, I, because there's bitters and oh, it's a straight up old-fashioned you're right, yeah. I wasn't going to mess with that kind of stuff. We're just going to do straight heat when I do mine.
Jamie Flanagan: 14:21
All right.
August Gitschlag: 14:25
All right, heat when I do mine, all right, um, all right. And then do we want a luxardo in there for good measure? No, I want to see. I want more flavors. Let me see if I can get some flavor.
Matt Fox: 14:28
It's already cheery, uh, all right, yeah there we go, so there's a cocktail nothing on the nose.
August Gitschlag: 14:38
I think there's more in this orange. There's more. I got a lot of orange going on over. I mean the air. It does smell wonderful in this room now yes, right now it smells great I don't know I, I don't, I'm not sold on that method. I mean it makes this room smell great.
Jamie Flanagan: 14:53
It's a nice little production yeah but capturing it and pouring it into the jar that you have to flip open the up and now I gotta clean this jar, you gotta make your cocktail and another thing, and yeah, yeah so that's the beauty of this one, which I don't know.
August Gitschlag: 15:08
I'm not saying this is better yet. Um, we haven't fired it up, but it's made to just smoke your drink. It's not a bulk smoking unit.
Jamie Flanagan: 15:15
Right, right, Well, no, this is made to do one at a time too. I just made a double cocktail, yeah you didn't lose anything by pouring it that way. And I think we could do it. Honestly, there's nothing. I don't normally use Fee Brothers. I'm getting a little on my tongue. Are you getting a little?
Matt Fox: 15:33
No, I got one word for this old-fashioned that's been smoked with the cherry wood. I got Fanta. I got orange Fanta going through my palate.
Jamie Flanagan: 15:42
I might have went heavy on the orange bitters Okay.
August Gitschlag: 15:45
That would explain it Honestly. I think that by mixing the old-fashioned, we took away from the experiment of the smoke. And I'm not saying it was the- wrong move, because I love old-fashions and that's how I usually drink my whiskey, yeah, but I think we can do it again. We'll revisit that on the flip. I'm thinking now that perhaps I should smoke mine in a shaker instead of in a glass.
Jamie Flanagan: 16:10
We'll do our individual glasses. We need more glasses. We can use your pint glass so we can at least see the smoke, our glassware sponsor, firebird Tavern. But they're not pint glasses, no, they provided us some pint glasses. We got a couple Firebird pint glasses.
August Gitschlag: 16:26
I'll be right back. Can you have one of the interns go grab us a pint glass.
Matt Fox: 16:30
I'll be right back. Can you have one of the interns go grab us a pint glass? I'll be, right back.
August Gitschlag: 16:31
I didn't mean you, Matt Fox. He's sitting on the end.
Jamie Flanagan: 16:35
We got to keep our eye open for Dave too.
August Gitschlag: 16:37
Yes, because we have to let him in, because we're locked. I have different. These are nice little containers, though it still smells nice in here it smells lovely. Oh, I have much smaller, so mine's more granular.
Jamie Flanagan: 16:49
But you have a smaller portal.
August Gitschlag: 16:50
Yeah. So we haven't pointed it down here. When we get some, there's a pint oh yeah, great, a pint glass. Okay, all right, we got some more, so I'll do a bulk version of it too. So we got to turn the.
Jamie Flanagan: 17:01
Let me get our camera down into this general reason oh, okay, no all right, yeah, you can turn that around all right. Bye, jamie all right, I'm, I'm, I'm just pants on, I'm cut, I do today cut out today.
August Gitschlag: 17:15
All right. So this system is different. It shows up in this little box okay, man, it's okay it's got the uh, the useless whiskey stones the useless whiskey stones.
Jamie Flanagan: 17:24
The useless whiskey stones I don't like whiskey stones a useful silicone big ball of ice. Love those. I brought one of those.
August Gitschlag: 17:31
Yeah, this one came. In this case, like I said, I'm going to end up putting it all into a Crown Royal thing. This is a gift from Mr Michael Montgomery, who was supposed to join us today. Thanks, mike. So we got oak, apple, beech, pear, pecan and cherry. So I think what I'm going to do? Well, first of all, we got to make. Well, we have more glasses, cool.
Matt Fox: 17:50
Yeah, so the intern took care of that. The idea with this one is that it has this little cap.
August Gitschlag: 17:58
It has holes around here. You're supposed to put this little smoking condom in there, put in your wood, fire it up and then plop this on top and let it let it aerate into the glass. Yeah, so it's made for like the, the, the easy cocktail, like your single cocktail, size, right, right, right, like that. Where am I? Yeah, but we're going to do it this way so we can see the smoke there we go, I can give it to all of y'all.
Jamie Flanagan: 18:25
Fill it up. So we just did the cherry.
Matt Fox: 18:27
Do you want to do oak or do you want to do pecan?
August Gitschlag: 18:29
I don't know. We got apple, we got pear, we got cherry. Does that say beach? It says beach. You want to do beach? Let's do beach, son of a beach. That's B-E-E-C-H.
Matt Fox: 18:40
Beach. Okay, I don't know what that means.
August Gitschlag: 18:43
So you got our juice.
Matt Fox: 18:49
All right, buffalo Trace, buffalo Trace.
August Gitschlag: 18:54
Is that beech wood? What do you think it is? No, it's beech plastic. I'm sorry.
Matt Fox: 19:00
It's a beech plant, yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 19:05
It's a tree.
Matt Fox: 19:06
Beech tree.
Jamie Flanagan: 19:07
All right, oh my God, you're making full drinks. No, this is going to be distributed Tree Beach tree.
August Gitschlag: 19:10
Oh my God, you're making full drinks. No, this is going to be distributed. I'm not putting all that crap in there.
Jamie Flanagan: 19:15
Pour three little tastes of the buffalo. So we can do side by side.
August Gitschlag: 19:19
Oh, okay, yeah, because I'm going to go clean.
Jamie Flanagan: 19:21
There's some naked buffalo. There Are we on camera. Oh my God, matt, what. It's President's Day, but I was going to do President's Day, but we did President's Day two years ago we did President's Day.
August Gitschlag: 19:33
I remember doing it Two years ago. Yeah, I did the McKinley. Yeah, I remember doing it.
Jamie Flanagan: 19:36
You did peanut butter. You did Jimmy Carter. You brought in a screwball. Oh, that's right, I brought in a screwball you brought in than yours.
August Gitschlag: 19:46
You have like chunks, but I'm still kind of burning wood on wood but with a little aluminum condom here and I have this thing. I guess this is like a cleaning tool.
Matt Fox: 19:56
That's more of a grabbing tool.
August Gitschlag: 19:57
Well, yeah, but to clean out the ashes maybe Tongs I don't know what the fuck they are.
Jamie Flanagan: 20:01
Tong tong tong tong. It's a tong Tong tong tong.
August Gitschlag: 20:07
Oh, by the way, Mayor Lesich says hello and did a great job at the Blue Jean Ball.
Jamie Flanagan: 20:12
Thanks, Mayor Lesich. Yeah, I try to you know. Did I say that right? Oh yeah, we got a date coming up at Gus's Snug. We can talk about that, yeah, and.
August Gitschlag: 20:25
I got an email Tim at Grand Trunk tomorrow. The DRLA reached out to me today to ask if I followed up on that.
Matt Fox: 20:30
I'm like okay I turn to play with fire.
August Gitschlag: 20:33
Yeah, go for it fire, fire, fire, fire fire fire.
David Wright: 20:38
Oh, look at that, see, that's a much more uh that's aggressive
Matt Fox: 20:42
smoke sexy that's much more aggressive smoke, yeah oh, that is sexy cap that baby, let Look at that sucker fill up with smoke.
Jamie Flanagan: 20:55
When you're at the restaurant they smoke it up and then they bring it to your table and then they lift it off. So do that big reveal there.
August Gitschlag: 21:05
Actually I might zap it a little more.
Jamie Flanagan: 21:08
Zip zap. Why waste it? There's just bourbon in there. You didn't put anything else. Yep, you're so bad. That's a lot of bourbon. It's like a whole freaking glass of bourbon. Between three of us. And then we got these little baby ones too.
August Gitschlag: 21:22
I'm going to use my big ice cube here. Uh-oh, we got more ice cubes in here.
Matt Fox: 21:25
I got more ice cubes in here.
August Gitschlag: 21:34
You got water to rinse it, if you want. Oh, door's locked, all right, be right back. I'll wait for you. I'll wait for you, oh look at that.
Jamie Flanagan: 21:37
I like this. This is a better look, I think, yes, much better. And then, when you do the big reveal with it, um, yeah, all right, so rinse out my ice glass give it all that, that orange, and we have an extra glass for Dave, because there you go.
August Gitschlag: 21:52
There's a fourth way we can spread this out now.
Jamie Flanagan: 21:56
You're scaring me a little bit. I can't roll with the big dogs.
August Gitschlag: 22:01
Come on, you are the big dog, you are the alpha male here. I guess we're going to pause the tape right now. Pause the recording until we get back.
Jamie Flanagan: 22:14
Phil, I'm reaching for more ice cubes. Okay, it's 100% August show. Right now, you have both cameras pointed at you and only you.
August Gitschlag: 22:20
Oh my God, it's a dream come true, one's at my junk, one's at my face.
Matt Fox: 22:25
This is the best ever.
August Gitschlag: 22:28
All right, so we're gonna take the lid off. Oh so it's. It's been marinating, has it? It has the lid off. Take the lid off.
Jamie Flanagan: 22:35
There's a lot of uh, accessories on the table, you know. Turn up the volume on number four. Oh yeah, we can if you want. There's a lot of accessories out here. Oh, all right, are we pouring our own?
August Gitschlag: 22:51
Yep. Whatever glass you want to, pour it in.
David Wright: 22:56
Thank you, Matthew.
Jamie Flanagan: 22:57
Smoking.
Matt Fox: 23:00
Four is up for you there, david, all right. All right, do I get an ice cube If you want it?
August Gitschlag: 23:10
Take it out of your frozen, cold heart.
Jamie Flanagan: 23:12
There's a scully one here, that's clean. There you go. Here's a clean, nice finger banging his old one.
August Gitschlag: 23:17
I got it. I got to use finger banging on this podcast. 17 consecutive podcasts I've used the phrase finger banging.
David Wright: 23:27
I'm just getting in on the party as long as you're not doing it while you're talking about it. Yeah, I wish so.
Jamie Flanagan: 23:35
So yeah, alright, so cheers, gentlemen, cheers.
Matt Fox: 23:44
See, I smell the smoke on this. I can smell it.
August Gitschlag: 23:47
The technique is better for smelling the smoke. It's just the way it's. You have a a fun presentation on the wood board, but man, that's messy. Oh, I guess you can pick that up. Oh hi, how are you?
Matt Fox: 23:59
So I'm actually not hating this one. I didn't hate the other one either but so that's regular.
August Gitschlag: 24:06
Now I got to try Buffalo Trace without the beech wood.
Jamie Flanagan: 24:11
Yeah, give it a sip.
Matt Fox: 24:14
I've had Buffalo Trace enough to know the difference. I feel, here you go, Dave. Is this the Buffalo Trace? Yeah, just straight Buffalo Trace.
David Wright: 24:23
Oh, just straight. Well, they're both straight.
August Gitschlag: 24:26
They're both straight, One's smoked, one's not Well this one's smoked, it's kind of by the bowl straight one.
David Wright: 24:33
Well, this one, this one, smoked it's kind of by yeah, works for me.
August Gitschlag: 24:35
All right, again you're at what you got, what we said in the open when we're talking about this. Yep, it's all in the nose, yeah, it's. I don't catch any different flavor really, but the smell that comes through is a whole different experience yeah, the permeation of the smoke, I don't know I'm getting a little.
Matt Fox: 24:55
I'm getting a little it's, it's lingering, isn't it?
Jamie Flanagan: 24:59
I'm getting a little. I'm getting a little different feel on it. I don't know. Maybe I maybe just because I want to. I don't. I don't know.
August Gitschlag: 25:05
No, I, there's definitely a nose. It did not carry over from the mason jar trapping it. I also let it sit for about two minutes, which was longer than you let yours, yeah, but I also. We all watched all the smoke escape from that jar.
Jamie Flanagan: 25:18
When I went to flip it and pour the cocktail in it.
August Gitschlag: 25:20
It all came out. I mean, yep, but here it's only sitting on the top ounce Right, it really isn't. It's not exactly infusing. I it really isn't. It's not exactly infusing. I don't know if you're, I didn't shake it, or anything.
Jamie Flanagan: 25:30
No, you're not supposed to shake that.
Matt Fox: 25:31
So really the difference between these two kits. Really, jamie, the quantity of wood chips that you got. There's a lot of wood chips going on there. But, august, you got these little tins but they're a finer stuff.
August Gitschlag: 25:45
They're made for one they're like snuff.
David Wright: 25:49
So I don't know if you guys have talked about it, since I'm in late, but there are different ways of smoking. Also, I don't know if you guys have seen the dome smoker where it just covers the drink.
Matt Fox: 25:57
Yeah.
August Gitschlag: 25:59
And I feel like that gets more. So this is a single cocktail version of it. It's the same theory, right, it's the box. Sorry for punching the microphone theory. Right, it's the box. Sorry for punching the microphone. It's like my first time.
Matt Fox: 26:11
That's all right.
August Gitschlag: 26:12
I'm sniffing my microphone, so you're all right, yeah okay, we did beach, right, yes, we did beach, beachwood.
Jamie Flanagan: 26:20
I don't know. I'm saying there's a little bit of smoke flavor in this to me in the Buffalo I'm going to do this again.
August Gitschlag: 26:27
I'm going to play with this again. This is worthwhile, I think.
Jamie Flanagan: 26:32
I am saying and that's why I said your style is the style I wanted, because it's the one that comes in the restaurant.
August Gitschlag: 26:39
There's still all this uncooked, I'm going to give mine another hit.
Matt Fox: 26:44
Are you going to go beach again?
August Gitschlag: 26:45
I'm going to go. I still got uncooked sawdust in there.
Matt Fox: 26:52
We can Tap it out of the something.
David Wright: 26:53
So, yeah, look at how that fills up. Oh, okay, yes, I see that. Oh, then you get the cap on yes, okay, oh yeah.
Matt Fox: 27:00
Oh yeah, oh yeah oh yeah.
August Gitschlag: 27:05
I could have kept going, I feel like there's like sticky buns.
Jamie Flanagan: 27:08
Let me see your sticky buns.
August Gitschlag: 27:09
So, yeah, this and this little uh, these little tongs here, they're still uncooked Uh, so I didn't feel exactly fill the thing up either.
Matt Fox: 27:15
Yeah.
August Gitschlag: 27:16
Man, it's a great smell though, isn't it?
David Wright: 27:18
It is oh, there you go the roof the roof.
August Gitschlag: 27:31
Now you're. Now you're smoked. I invite all of you to take a shot at this, if you'd like to and the unveiling I'm going to pick it up for you.
Jamie Flanagan: 27:37
Yeah, I'm going to add my raw buffalo to this buffalo.
David Wright: 27:40
I was just thinking the same thing, and then I'm going to re-smoke, See that's pretty.
Matt Fox: 27:44
See that is a pretty looking thing.
Jamie Flanagan: 27:46
And that's the thing. And Now it hangs out in there.
August Gitschlag: 27:48
If you want some more beach, I can give you another hit of my snuff, but the second one's going to cost you.
Jamie Flanagan: 27:55
The first one's on me.
August Gitschlag: 27:57
Oh, look at this smoking cocktail.
Jamie Flanagan: 27:59
Now it's fun, this is fun, yes, yeah, and there's a friend of mine, stir it up a little bit.
August Gitschlag: 28:07
You don't get much in there I don't want any more than that.
Matt Fox: 28:11
Then you take the lid off.
David Wright: 28:12
That's a great presentation.
Matt Fox: 28:14
That's an aesthetic, is what that is If you want to give it another pinch? Careful, it might be hot. The metal might be hot. You can shake it up. Here's the tongs Mix up, go.
August Gitschlag: 28:29
Here's the tongs Mix up what you have there, what's in there. I don't want you to skip this. Ashes and shit Got it.
Matt Fox: 28:35
That's fun.
Jamie Flanagan: 28:35
You can dump that out actually.
Matt Fox: 28:37
I like the aesthetic of the smoke rising from the glass.
August Gitschlag: 28:40
It mentions smoking the ice, and I feel like that's what we're doing. This is like smoked ice. I'm smelling the ice before the cocktail gets to my face.
David Wright: 28:49
There's a lot of uncooked in there. You've got to put the aluminum part in there.
Matt Fox: 28:52
first You've got to use a little metal condom. It's hot.
Jamie Flanagan: 28:57
Hot condom.
David Wright: 28:58
It's all good.
Jamie Flanagan: 28:59
Are you using metal?
August Gitschlag: 29:00
condoms. Use that little thing as a little funnel.
Jamie Flanagan: 29:03
Don't reuse metal condoms.
August Gitschlag: 29:08
David's finger banging my beach.
Jamie Flanagan: 29:10
It's been the gross's finger banging, his finger banging my beach.
August Gitschlag: 29:11
It's been the gross hey, finger banging my beach beach no, I just washed my hands okay and that's a good thing. His ungloved hand is finger banging my beach and he's a. He's like a professional professional what?
Jamie Flanagan: 29:26
yeah, I'm professional, a lot of got to say hi to a few people checking in. Lee, he's one of our podcasters here and he was deciding what he wants his studio to look like while he's recording here in the podcast.
August Gitschlag: 29:39
You're good David. You're good David, put that. Yeah, there you go, Put that sucker in there for a minute.
Jamie Flanagan: 29:44
And he was like he just did a screen grab of us doing this.
August Gitschlag: 29:51
He just did a screen grab of us doing this. He goes I like this backdrop, I'm like, well, because it's mine, yeah, it costs just $17 more. This is daddy's show.
Jamie Flanagan: 29:55
We're the big show.
August Gitschlag: 29:57
No, you don't kid, it looks good, this is prime time, this is SportsCenter.
Jamie Flanagan: 30:01
Yeah, this is Poppy's run here. There you go, david oh yeah, there you go man.
Matt Fox: 30:12
Jamie, sorry, thank you All.
David Wright: 30:12
Oh, there you go, david. Yeah, there you go, man, I'm jamie, sorry, thank you all. Right, right in front of you, there's your tongues I just do one little finger banging, it's easier half a tweeze the resurgence of finger banging.
August Gitschlag: 30:18
I love it. Everything should be finger banging, all right half a half a tweeze of uh I am happy with this. Michael montgomery, thank you so much. This is a fun kit.
Matt Fox: 30:32
Well, you just want to have one or two drinks. You don't want to go through all that pressure of the big smoker.
August Gitschlag: 30:38
This is something that happened. You get no smoke through there. You got to use the. Is that a fresh whole batch of stuff? You got to stir it up.
David Wright: 30:44
Oh, I did Stir up the tongs. Oh, probably got it gets plugged.
August Gitschlag: 30:47
Yeah, it's plugged up, so you got to stir it up, stir it up. You got a finger bang the metal condom in there, Jesus.
Jamie Flanagan: 30:55
The cup. Ok, I'm just curious, because we do like AI show descriptions. What word is it going to trigger on?
David Wright: 31:04
Yeah, Well, since that's what's said about 100 times, it's probably right, that's what I'm saying. I'm going to be a while. Right, that's what I'm saying.
Jamie Flanagan: 31:09
I'm going to take a wild guess I'm really looking forward to how the AI.
Matt Fox: 31:13
I'm going to take a really wild guess. And it's going to be waving.
August Gitschlag: 31:16
Okay, all right, let's see how yours fills up here.
Jamie Flanagan: 31:21
There you go, bring it up For people listening.
August Gitschlag: 31:23
There's a smoke point we're doing that that's a beautiful thing smoky, they call me smoky hey, I think smoking the ice is like really like one of the things we're doing. They'd say to put the ice into a jar and then oh, really, smoke the ice first yeah, okay, and then use the ice.
Jamie Flanagan: 31:49
Well, I have a jar, that'll be. Yeah, it's an ice smoking jar so this is, this is kit. I got Dave with the board and the bigger chips, but you make your cocktail in a different glass and then you burn the chips and you get the smoke in here, then you pour your cocktail in here, then you do that, then you swirl it.
David Wright: 32:07
There's a whole lot.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:07
Put it back in the glass, yeah and then you put it back in the glass, then you put it back in the list.
Matt Fox: 32:11
That's a lot, it's too much. So I just took another sip of mine and it's got a real smoke taste to it, if you will, because it's been sitting in there.
David Wright: 32:19
The ice has been sitting in there for a while. I think you've got to let it sit for a little bit and just let it get.
Matt Fox: 32:23
Yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:24
All right. Well, there's a smell on the nose.
Matt Fox: 32:27
You're still smoking too.
David Wright: 32:29
Oh yeah, you can smell it right off the bat.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:34
Ah, and that's what I've noticed in the restaurants. It's getting a little burny feeling. I think you'd probably want to clean that out and not do it through the ashes so much.
August Gitschlag: 32:45
All right. Well, I'm not going to do it through the ashes. I'm not allowed.
Jamie Flanagan: 32:48
I'm getting a little ashy. Do it through the ash, I'm kidding.
August Gitschlag: 32:58
Okay, why isn't carlson here for those jokes? Oh it ain't unusual oh man but uh.
Jamie Flanagan: 33:10
So yeah, no, that's uh, but it's a. I think, yeah, there's much more flavor in those.
August Gitschlag: 33:14
I can always just take. They have a backup condom. Oh, that's hot, that's hot. But you know there's a backup, oh, a backup basket. Yeah, backup basket, Secondary basket. That's for the second. It adds to the second.
Jamie Flanagan: 33:24
Doing it I think this one adds a lot more flavor, or is it just?
August Gitschlag: 33:30
going through your nose. I get it A thousand percent more. You have better, cooler looking jars and stuff. Yeah, but I think this method works better.
David Wright: 33:40
Right. I wonder if these chips would work in that.
August Gitschlag: 33:46
If the bigger chips would work in that smaller thing, there's a reason they ground them up this small?
Jamie Flanagan: 33:48
I think Probably so. I think they burn better yeah.
August Gitschlag: 33:51
They burn better and quicker.
Matt Fox: 33:52
Mm-hmm.
August Gitschlag: 33:56
Yeah, I think they burn better. Yeah, they burn better. And quicker.
Matt Fox: 33:59
It's called kindling for a reason. What's that reason? Because it's about children. I said kindling, not kidding Kindling. Kindling Because it's thinner, it's going to burn quicker.
August Gitschlag: 34:07
I know Where's my tongs please, tongs Great smell on that, and we do have the Southfield Fire Department on alert, by the way.
Jamie Flanagan: 34:17
They are ready. They're ready and willing to come. Hey, make me one of those. It's like what Do we elect a new Pope? What is this?
August Gitschlag: 34:27
Well, we have to change the wood in different colors. We change the smoke we get a new Pope, all right. Well, I think I'm going to smoke one more with a different flavor.
Jamie Flanagan: 34:37
Who saw the Vatican? No, was it the Vatican?
August Gitschlag: 34:39
Conclave not yet. Well, let me spoil it for you. Okay, I mean what?
Jamie Flanagan: 34:44
happens. The guy becomes pope, somebody becomes pope, somebody becomes pope. They pick a pope In a very auspicious way. Now you can pick your nose, and you can pick your nose and you can pick your Pope. Just don't pick your Pope's nose. How long have you?
August Gitschlag: 34:59
been sitting on that.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:01
I don't even know what that means.
August Gitschlag: 35:03
More different ice cubes. I feel like this ice cube is now smoked.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:06
There's a scully ones, I guess I could rinse it off, right, it would.
August Gitschlag: 35:09
it would no, no, no, no, no.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:11
We got five more fresh big ice cubes and these are Scullies. These are Scullies. There you go. You got a Skull Ice Cube, yeah, but the bigger, more complex ones, I don't know. But now, my friend, we went out to post-Valentine's. We're too cheap to go out on the 14th. We went out on the 15th, valentine's dinner, you got your senior discount. Did you, I did, we got our senior discount.
August Gitschlag: 35:37
There is a little char on the lid, on the wooden lid, which I expected.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:41
Yeah, but we went back to his house and he got a new.
August Gitschlag: 35:45
There's a lot of unburned in there. Yeah, I think we got to use less.
David Wright: 35:49
Maybe, maybe, don't pack it, put it in lighter.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:53
Is there a suggestion?
August Gitschlag: 35:55
No, it says, put it in basket, set fire.
Jamie Flanagan: 35:58
So it's probably just one grab Maybe one pinch instead of five bangs.
David Wright: 36:03
Yeah, I can see that.
August Gitschlag: 36:05
That makes sense, right, yeah?
Jamie Flanagan: 36:07
This is where.
August Gitschlag: 36:08
Dave burned the shit out of it by taking a Marine Corps World War II bloat flamethrower to my smoking kit. Let me get this.
Jamie Flanagan: 36:16
Let me get this. I got this weed. I got this weed burner in my shed, all right, I was gonna go for good morning, but but we had, he's got it. It was an interesting one. Uh, you did cherry, right, I did. Uh, I did cherry, yes, and it was almost like a hookah. So it was a gun. It was a gun like this, except the gun itself had the reservoir for the wood that's called a bong.
August Gitschlag: 36:49
I wouldn't know anything about those things.
Jamie Flanagan: 36:51
And then there was a pipe, a hose that came out of it, and the hose had a plastic circle on it about the size of the cover of the wooden one that we're putting over the cocktail glass. So at the end of the hose, and so the lighter and the reservoir built into one thing and it sits stagnant and it burns the wood right in the lighter itself and then it travels through the hose, which looks like a hookah hose, okay, and then they put the plastic lid over your thing. But it's not as sexy as this. You got the natural wood. That's a sexy little piece. All right, I used august. You are a sexy little piece thank you.
August Gitschlag: 37:30
I told you that about a quarter of the wood that I used in the beginning. Yeah, this is I'm. I'm doing this as if it's just like this one cocktail, because the next person might want a different flavor.
Jamie Flanagan: 37:39
Right, sure, yeah, so that's how I'm gonna fire this one up all right, my lighter wasn't as strong as yours, I think you, yeah, look at that, so it smoked it up just as much as when I put a ton of stuff in there and fought through the others.
David Wright: 37:52
Actually, that's probably better. Just have a less.
Jamie Flanagan: 37:55
A small pinch is good, less wood is better.
Matt Fox: 37:58
Yeah, that's not what she said Because, the more wood hurts.
David Wright: 38:04
Hey, too much wood it goes to waste Gets thrown out in the backyard for.
Jamie Flanagan: 38:10
Don't even start talking about it. Don't talk about splinters.
August Gitschlag: 38:14
At this rate, this kit and all these wood chips would last me a lifetime. If this is all I need, I don't need your giant jars.
Jamie Flanagan: 38:22
No, I mean the jars are ginormous.
August Gitschlag: 38:24
You can take that stuff and throw it in your smoker with your food.
Matt Fox: 38:27
now, yeah, absolutely Soak that with water. Put some water in there.
Jamie Flanagan: 38:34
Get them wet and throw them in your smoker. Save it for our man cave.
Matt Fox: 38:37
Save it for the man cave Gifts right.
Jamie Flanagan: 38:41
Look at that. But dad, it's smoky. Remember the K-Tel. Remember the K-Tel. But, dad, it's smoky.
August Gitschlag: 38:51
I don't know what the pair is any much different. It's definitely a different nose than the beach. When I smell beach wood, honestly it smells like a campfire. To me, beach is a campfire. The pear is not campfire smell. This is a different nose, if you want to give it a shot, give it a shot.
Matt Fox: 39:14
Or just might Beechwood Four or five.
August Gitschlag: 39:17
Beechwood Pearwood.
Matt Fox: 39:20
Should I clear this out or put more in.
August Gitschlag: 39:23
You got to give it a look, dig around, see if there's anything in there. You're going to make a mess.
Jamie Flanagan: 39:28
I have a dump, a safety water thing he did Safety squirrel over here was taking care safety water thing he did. Safety squirrel over here was, and I think, gutting it out, I think scraping it out and having a fresh burn for the fresh cocktail. Because by the time I did it.
August Gitschlag: 39:42
I was like I was sloppy.
David Wright: 39:45
So when.
August Gitschlag: 39:46
I saw you cleaning it out. You were the first clean out.
David Wright: 39:48
I did clean it out. I saw a lot of fresh wood.
Matt Fox: 39:53
A lot of fresh wood in there, so I got a little bit of pear wood chips in there right yeah, because if you look, you can see just how much, how many different flavors.
Jamie Flanagan: 40:06
You got there Six. We're going to have to go through six cocktails. I don't know.
Matt Fox: 40:09
I think you don't have school tomorrow, Jamie. No, I don't.
August Gitschlag: 40:12
How much of that is not burned?
Jamie Flanagan: 40:14
No yeah.
Matt Fox: 40:17
Quite a bit. All right, I got the other skull ice cube here.
Jamie Flanagan: 40:22
I think it's fun. I still, I still say I taste the flavor, but is it because the smoke is hanging in the air, that's absolutely it. We're. We're in a tight spot. I mean the that's fair in here.
Matt Fox: 40:31
We're in a tight spot.
Jamie Flanagan: 40:32
That's fair. The Podcast, your Voice studios are palatious.
David Wright: 40:37
They are. It's the palatial studios, as I say.
August Gitschlag: 40:38
We contain ourselves, the nook that we are in to record. Oh, look how that filled up.
Jamie Flanagan: 40:43
Nicely, that's beautiful and it just kind of snakes on through and rolls on through. Break on through to the other side. Oh, you don't want my janky ass.
David Wright: 40:53
Oh, I forgot, I had one over here.
Jamie Flanagan: 40:54
No, no use that one, you got better.
David Wright: 40:58
You got a better push on the other one. Wait till you're done, matt August, if you could throw me the pecan one right there, sure.
August Gitschlag: 41:06
I got pecan peach apple oak cherry. I'll put this right up to the camera Ready, Jamie.
Jamie Flanagan: 41:11
Oh, here goes the reveal. There it is that's fun? Yeah, all right, yeah. So people listening to the audio version of this, there's a bunch of dead spots. We apologize, you'd need to check out. I say a lot man.
August Gitschlag: 41:29
I made it a point when I became a podcaster and I go my safe word is so and I had a very professional and I go um. Uh, my, my safe word is so, and I had a very professional person uh like like, not like, you aren't review my first ever co-host or co-hosting.
Matt Fox: 41:42
Uh, my first co-hosting.
August Gitschlag: 41:44
And I had asked her. I'm like, how did I do? She's like you only said um or uh twice in an hour. You did really well and I'm like that was the only thing I wanted to do.
Jamie Flanagan: 41:53
I do a lot. But here's the thing right, we're not scripted and we really wing it.
August Gitschlag: 41:59
We're very little produced here. Minimally produced. Okay, sorry, we didn't help you there. Dave, I got it.
David Wright: 42:11
You guys are doing your thing, you're okay.
August Gitschlag: 42:14
Every microphone banging every camera Because we didn't pick up the fucking lid for you.
Jamie Flanagan: 42:19
I'm talking about me.
August Gitschlag: 42:21
Hello, here's the safety water. You have the tongs in front of you right Tongs. They were in front of you, matthew Fox. Didn't you hand them to?
Matt Fox: 42:33
him. I tried to.
David Wright: 42:35
Oh, there they are, got them back.
Jamie Flanagan: 42:41
Oh, the ums Talking about me and my ums. I do way too much.
August Gitschlag: 42:46

You probably could have got another one and as we're using this, I can see you probably could have got another burn, yeah because there's still some on your ums but we don't know what the hell we're doing. This. I can see you probably could have got another. Another burn, yeah, because there's still some. Yeah, but we don't know what the hell we're doing. So that's fine with me.
Jamie Flanagan: 42:55
The more the more we're winging it, the more I arm it up true, okay, the more we're winging it, uh okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay okay okay, okay, okay, fuck you in the drive-thru so, while dave is doing this thing, um so this, I still taste it in here. I still, I still, I taste it in here now.
August Gitschlag: 43:16

Matt Fox: 43:18
I'm telling you so we record whenever you were. You listen to the podcast whenever, however. So this is the day after the 50th anniversary of saturday night live dead of dead.
Jamie Flanagan: 43:30
Of winter in michigan it's cold as balls. Yes, we've had five days of snow and there's about waist high. No, it's not.
Matt Fox: 43:37
Did you ever think in your life that you would see Nathan Lane do a line of cocaine and then start singing about cocaine and vodka in New York in the 1980s?
Jamie Flanagan: 43:47
I wonder if that was real. That's how you know Mulaney was.
Matt Fox: 43:50
I wonder if that was a real toots.
Jamie Flanagan: 43:52
I wonder if it was a real toots. Oh, you're filling up nicely there, Dave.
August Gitschlag: 43:55
Nice, that is that.
Matt Fox: 43:57
I never thought I would see the day that Nathan Lane would open when you open that.
Jamie Flanagan: 44:01
You got to do it in front of the camera?
August Gitschlag: 44:02
Yes, absolutely, but let it sit, for a solid it's going to sit in.
Jamie Flanagan: 44:08
You never thought that's like Tuesday for a Nathan. What are you talking about? He did? It apparently you haven't been to the right dressing rooms nice socks here we go. Here's the big reveal there you are that's it, that's all that's so nice. And then when they bring it to your table and it lingers like that, it's just a nice aesthetic. So you don't want to nose that, because if you nose that it's gonna hurt I am gonna nose it.
August Gitschlag: 44:37
Oh did it hurt you, just, I just blew it did not hurt it's like you're, it's good though yeah, you're smoking a palm all back in the 70s unfiltered came out your nose like a lucky strike in 1988. So when you're camping, that's 1888 so what do you when you?
Jamie Flanagan: 44:54
camping. What do you do? You move to get the fire out of your face.
August Gitschlag: 44:57
What the fuck is camping? That's a shit that poor people do. I can't afford a hotel.
David Wright: 45:05
They couldn't afford the trailer. They had to go in a tent. No, no, Okay so full disclosure.
Matt Fox: 45:09
JB does not camp, he glamps.
Jamie Flanagan: 45:11
Get the fuck yourself.
August Gitschlag: 45:14
How big is your RV?
Jamie Flanagan: 45:17
I don't have an RV. No, we do a tent.
August Gitschlag: 45:19
This is over there vaping.
Jamie Flanagan: 45:20
We do a tent.
August Gitschlag: 45:22
Hillbilly.
Jamie Flanagan: 45:23
We got a tent, your tent has a patio.
Matt Fox: 45:27
For God's sakes.
Jamie Flanagan: 45:28
Well, we lay down a carpet.
August Gitschlag: 45:33
Look, I was a boy scout. I did all that shit for years. I'm just being a, I'm just being me, yeah yeah, but uh, so I.
Jamie Flanagan: 45:40
But we lay down a like we had, like a I was a boy area area rug, little square area right I would throw it down and we got a queen size inflatable mattress, but it's it's got. Uh, I have that too, it, but it's not on the ground, right, it's got the X and out folding chair. Yeah prison cot.
August Gitschlag: 45:58
Yeah, the legs on it.
Jamie Flanagan: 46:00
So it's built into it and so it sits up off the ground, because getting up off the ground At your age All right, so I just went to rinse my glass out here with water and I still get the smoke.
August Gitschlag: 46:13
It's in the glass now it's in the glass.
Jamie Flanagan: 46:15
Now, it's in the glass or the ice.
August Gitschlag: 46:16
Well, the ice melts right.
Jamie Flanagan: 46:19
So I burned off that layer. You're only smelling.
August Gitschlag: 46:22
I'm smelling smoke still and it's in the glass.
David Wright: 46:25
It could be because the whole room is filled with smoke. It is.
Matt Fox: 46:28
Yeah, your olfactory senses are just kicking right now. What's that word Olfactory? Wow, you're a smart guy.
Jamie Flanagan: 46:36
You work at a bank, don't you?
Matt Fox: 46:39
No, he works in an oral factory Oral factory, did I say it right, oral factory, olfactory, olfactory. Okay, thank you, don O-L-E factory Olfactory I was going to say which is different than an oral factory. Did I say oral?
David Wright: 46:52
factory I love visiting the oral factory.
Matt Fox: 46:54
That's already in my algorithm.
August Gitschlag: 46:57
I cannot wait for AI to try to make sense. It's already in my algorithm.
Jamie Flanagan: 47:03
The transcription on this is going to be gorgeous.
David Wright: 47:06
I may or may not admit oral factories in my Google search history. There's a couple of cookies from oralfactorycom.
August Gitschlag: 47:14
That that ca? Yeah, I can skip past the age registration.
Jamie Flanagan: 47:18
it just goes right in oral factorycom I'm gonna get my ass over to go daddy right now and get that you're welcome oral factory.
Matt Fox: 47:31
You know it's already taken. What's's that?
August Gitschlag: 47:33
And I'm not going to look, you'd be.
David Wright: 47:35
It's already. Yeah, you'd do it. I'd be so surprised it ain't going to be the worst thing.
August Gitschlag: 47:39
I Googled this today.
Matt Fox: 47:41
I had the day off.
August Gitschlag: 47:41
Dave, I had the day off. It's President's Day.
Jamie Flanagan: 47:44
Google's been silly. So, yeah, I thought we were going to do. I thought, oh, maybe we'll do a President's Day, because we went to Nashville and we toured the Bellmead winery and they have a distillery. There's Bellmead whiskey, bourbon, and so I have a fifth of it and I'm like, oh you know, I've been hanging on to it to do an episode. Sure, I got like five, six, eight bourbons at home.
August Gitschlag: 48:12
It's available. I'm telling you oral factory.
David Wright: 48:13
See what, I see what, see what the url costs yeah, the guy go daddy, oh yeah yeah, yeah, yeah so
Jamie Flanagan: 48:22
so you're in tennessee so and I thought the bell mead that we had but there's no president lived on that I thought it was. There was a harding, but it wasn't the right harding, uh so I was like oh crap, what are we going to do on president's day?
Jamie Flanagan: 48:34
and I'm like, well, it's cold out. I'm like I, you know these nice, uh, these with these smoky cocktails, right, some, you know, so do you want to do? This is winter and it's very nice and very fun, and it's warm, smoky in winter, you want it for one cent for oral factorycom is available oh we are dirtier than we really think.
August Gitschlag: 48:54
We are. We are above and beyond our dirty. We've gone over the dirty and I didn't think that was possible in this day and age.
Matt Fox: 49:01
Is Harding Oral Factory available, that's?
August Gitschlag: 49:03
on your phone. I gave you Oral Factory.
Jamie Flanagan: 49:08
Yeah, but this is a nice winter cocktail. We're in the dead of winter here and two feet of snow, but would you do this? Would you smoke a cocktail in the summer?
David Wright: 49:18
I would yeah. Like out on a patio having a cigar kind of.
Jamie Flanagan: 49:21
Maybe you're mixing smoke flavors, okay, All right, I'm just thinking is this a winter adventure?
August Gitschlag: 49:28
No, I was going to do this Dave argues for the summer.
Matt Fox: 49:31
It'd be more of a fall springtime thing for me.
August Gitschlag: 49:34
I think you do it in a contained space, it's not an outdoor thing. I think you don't do this at a tailgate. I think you do it out in a room.
David Wright: 49:40
Well, on your own patio, Well, but I just think the idea of how it makes the room smell. Hey, we're going to do cherry cocktails tonight.
August Gitschlag: 49:47
Right, yeah, and just the room starts to smell like that. I think that's worthwhile.
Jamie Flanagan: 49:52
But if I'm having a cigar on the patio after work and I'm doing a cocktail, I might smoke one in the summertime.
August Gitschlag: 49:58
Then go see your counselor about your problems.
David Wright: 50:00
Yeah absolutely I'll be there, jamie, you and I, all You'll be there for us.
Matt Fox: 50:04
Yeah, we'll have a session. Yeah you'll sit in the hot tub.
Jamie Flanagan: 50:07
Yeah, there's nobody more screwed up than a high school counselor.
David Wright: 50:10
Can you imagine? No, I just like that. How about a therapist?
Jamie Flanagan: 50:17
Yeah, yeah, oh Jesus.
August Gitschlag: 50:19
It's like all right, never mind, All right yeah.
Jamie Flanagan: 50:22
No, this glass is empty Story time and I smell smoke in it.
August Gitschlag: 50:26
Yeah, Actually, maybe it's just the air. It could be in your nostrils.
David Wright: 50:31
In your olfactory, it's in your oral factory. That's what it is.
August Gitschlag: 50:36
It could be in my head it could be making it up. Is it all in my head? Let's ask the magic eight ball Is it all in my head.
Matt Fox: 50:44
What's it say? What's it say? It's a loud ball.
David Wright: 50:46
I got it. I got it, come on.
Jamie Flanagan: 50:49
Oh, you moved it, the magic is gone.
Matt Fox: 50:52
No same one.
Jamie Flanagan: 50:54
And the magic eight ball says Can't focus, try again.
August Gitschlag: 50:58
Couldn't focus because I didn't have my glasses on.
David Wright: 51:00
There you go, it knew it.
August Gitschlag: 51:03
We're approaching our one hour mark. Guys, I know who cares.
David Wright: 51:07
That's just me next, so don't worry, I've been bumped on. It just says bummer dude, bummer dude, you've been bumped on.
August Gitschlag: 51:14
What was it just? Says bummer dude, bummer, dude. And what was the question?
Jamie Flanagan: 51:16
you've been bumped by better shows than this is it just?
August Gitschlag: 51:18
is it all in my head?
Jamie Flanagan: 51:20
bummer dude. Oh yeah, yeah, bummer, it all in my head, so that's a yes I suppose yeah, I don't know, I'm, I'm, I will. I will advocate that I still get it in the glass.
Matt Fox: 51:33
Yeah, better than in the Never mind.
August Gitschlag: 51:37
Yeah, I get a different smell when I put the glass.
David Wright: 51:43
It's definitely in there. It's in there.
Jamie Flanagan: 51:44
But I don't, it's in there. Where's the bell?
August Gitschlag: 51:49
You should get a bell here there it is. That's what she said.
Jamie Flanagan: 51:52
bell, Alright, so smokers Simple as best. That's what she said, Belle. Alright, so smokers simple as best. I like that. Just on the top of it one. All the other ones are way too complicated for home, unless you're really just having a cocktail party.
August Gitschlag: 52:03
Give me another style. The box is also presentation. I want the box.
Jamie Flanagan: 52:08
Mine is a nightmare. I don't think yours works. It's not that it's a nightmare.
Matt Fox: 52:13
It's just the wood chips are just too big.
David Wright: 52:17
No, no, no, that whole capture the whole.
Jamie Flanagan: 52:20
catch the fart thing. Fart in a jar yeah.
August Gitschlag: 52:22
Basically, it absolutely is. That's a fart in a jar. It's a fart in a jar.
Jamie Flanagan: 52:25
Yeah, I mean, it's a nice jar. It's a nice jar. Yeah, I might use that to smoke my ice cubes there you go.
August Gitschlag: 52:34
By three at a time, yeah, but then again the whole point is, you've got to flip it over and you lose.
Jamie Flanagan: 52:41
I'm going to get one of yours and I'm going to put my ice cubes in here and I'm going to smoke my ice cubes in here.
August Gitschlag: 52:44
Yeah, you can put your ice cubes in a pint glass, a shaker a little shaker.
David Wright: 52:59
Smaller the wood chips, the better. At this point, yeah, from what?
August Gitschlag: 53:00
from what I've experienced, put those in a ninja and grind up a little well even these, even that last burn I did, and I didn't put that much in, but there's a lot of unburnt. Yeah, you can see it. Yeah, it is. Uh, and I used. I thought we used just a little bit I mean, I think that was two pinches yeah, that looks like a lot of fresh stuff in there this is, uh, this is a nice kit. I like this setup, mike. You said Mike Montgomery, mike almost came, he almost got him here, pumpkin with an A.
David Wright: 53:23

August Gitschlag: 53:35
Should I put this butane thing back in here? How does that work? Sure, yeah, yeah, put it back in there.
Jamie Flanagan: 53:39
That's fine, as long as you're not taking it on a plane or shipping it Today, you know, shipping it across state lines. You know I think you'd be all right that I was all set to make, like, honest to God, old fashions, I had the Luxardo's I was going to do. You can still make us one while we sit in there and have a drink while these two are talking about nonsense In the next show, mental health and helping people.
August Gitschlag: 54:04
Like I said, nonsense.
David Wright: 54:07
You know crazy. We're talking about phobia of smoke today.
August Gitschlag: 54:12
Quit smoking. How to hypnotize grandma to stop smoking nice segue.
David Wright: 54:18

August Gitschlag: 54:57

Matt Fox: 55:26
I've been there. The original one that was opened up was at Novi way back in the day and they actually shipped the actual bar they have there in from ireland and some of the some of the flooring that they had was from the guinness factory, right, so you know the the gus folks, they, they just do it, they do it yeah so you know who's a regular.
August Gitschlag: 55:44
There is tony from firebird oh, that's like his regular bar do we invite? Him and then have like. It's almost like having someone get like at your wedding. Is that what we're doing? Are we bringing another bar owner into this bar and we're going to talk to them about both bars. But we've already given Firebird all the props they deserve Cross-pollination man, or we can call in Craig Folley again I don't know yeah yeah, yeah, craig's another voice, I feel like I can't talk when I'm around him.
Jamie Flanagan: 56:10
Get him in it. Get him. Yeah, he's an easy guy, he knows his way to closet he knows he might be on time, this time.
August Gitschlag: 56:14
So he might be on time.
Jamie Flanagan: 56:16
So Gus is. We had a crap weather day. I love that man.
Matt Fox: 56:19
He's a good dude he's good people, but Gus is snug. Is that what you said?
