Man Cave Happy Hour
Unforgettable Evenings: DJ Tom T Talks Music, Charity, and Cigar Lounge Laughs
Picture this: A chilly evening, a cozy mobile cigar lounge at Thomas McGee's, and the perfect pint of Guinness. That's exactly where we find ourselves as we kick off the Man Cave Happy Hour with the gang—Matt Fox, August Kitchener, and our special guest, the world-class DJ and philanthropist, DJ Tom T. With whiskey in hand, we share laughs over cigars (even if they're not everyone's cup of tea) and joke about the quirks of past podcast episodes, including that unforgettable Twizzler-infused vodka moment. It's an evening where camaraderie rules, and the joys of Eastern Market's local hotspots like Firebird Tavern and McGee's take center stage.
Our musical journey then shifts as we dive into Tom's globe-trotting DJ career and his remarkable charity work. From remixing tracks for the likes of Bastille and the Killers to his ever-popular "Throwback Thursday Jam of the Day," Tom entertains and inspires on and off the stage. We relive stories of friendships formed at gigs and sustained through fantasy football leagues, celebrating Tom's dedication to giving back to the community, even as he crisscrosses the globe for his next big show. His ability to balance a hectic schedule with meaningful contributions to local charities paints a picture of a truly committed artist.
As the night keeps rolling, we lighten the mood with a playful game of "Who's Smellier?" and share tales of unforgettable parties, like the upcoming New Year's Eve bash at Boogie Fever. The discussion meanders through lively anecdotes, from tailgate shenanigans to personal milestones like wedding anniversaries. Wrapping up in our snug mobile podcast studio, we reflect on the creative ways we've kept the party alive—even during a pandemic—and the enduring friendships that make these gatherings truly special. Join us for a night of humor, music, and the joy of good company.

DJ Tom T: 0:35
Fox is actually here, everybody, oh my.
August: 0:36
God, how did that happen?
Jamie: 0:38
We haven't seen Matt in a minute. I love the way that flows when it all flows together.
August: 0:41
Yeah, well, yeah, it's a little chilly out here. It's, uh, it is. And speaking of out here, we're out in the sticks.
Jamie: 0:53
Yes, we are in the actual sticks we're downtown and yet we're in the sticks again we use that joke mark at my happy place yes, I use that joke on the last podcast. It's like like podcast crazy. Tonight, deep for the week I'll eat. She just did her show. Chief, big Chief One. Love that voice though.
August: 1:12
Oh yeah, Rob.
Jamie: 1:13
I just want to listen to him, because his voice is just that.
August: 1:16
If only yeah, just talk, I'll give you a script, buddy.
Jamie: 1:26
And I'll, and I'll go to sleep. It is, it is so. And then, uh, we did a couple episodes of the man cave, so it's just like podcast crazy out here.
August: 1:30
It kind of is and we're being hosted by uh mcgee's, uh, thomas mcgee's, it's hosting uh in the eastern market, your happy place, and then the lounge itself is, as the joke goes, in the sticks.
Jamie: 1:41
But it's the sticks spelled.
August: 1:43
S-T-X Mobile Cigar Lounge. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that there's a great relationship between McGee's and the Glassware sponsor.
Jamie: 1:55
Firebird Tavern Right down the street.
August: 1:58
Owen and Eric are really good friends. Their next barrel pick is going joint between Firebird and McGee's. He didn't mention that. He didn't mention it. Yes, that's why I'm here. Glad you're here.
Jamie: 2:11
August, family Fowler enjoyed us out to the Sticks Mobile Lounge. They brought the lounge out here for us Set up right here and I'm like well, probably illegally, but you know what?
August: 2:25
What's that? Did you forget my name? No, Uh-oh, because I got interrupted. Uh-oh, you just got white-boyed. I got white-boyed Monkey in the middle. Hi, say my name.
Jamie: 2:43
Can't to Tamara. Yeah, I can't to Tamara, I got interrupted.
August: 2:48
This is a hell of a setup here.
Jamie: 2:49
Yes, we go back and look at the sticks episode that we did, because we dive deep into just the amazing setup they have.
August: 3:01
It's great when we first started doing this podcast when I first came in, I'm like guys, I'm not involved in Cigar Spot. No, come on in, it's great, I'm going to join you. When we first started doing this podcast, when I first came in, I'm like guys, I'm not involved in the cigar spot.
Jamie: 3:08
No, come on in, we're delivering drinks, it's all good.
August: 3:12
I'm not doing the whole cigar lounge thing.
Jamie: 3:14
It makes my clothes stink. It's not my jam.
August: 3:18
It's always been your jam.
Jamie: 3:20
I'm not huge on cigars.
August: 3:23
This is pretty fantastic. I mean not huge on cigars. You've had that big stick in your mouth all night. I'll drink to that. Here we go.
Jamie: 3:33
That's why I'm here. Ain't the first time we'll be like here's the nice thing. Here's the nice thing about Thomas McGee's right. See, that's a perfect pint, that's a perfect pint. It's a pet peeve of mine getting a Guinness not poured. Holy crap, I was going to ask him. We've got to do another episode down here about pouring a Guinness correctly.
August: 3:54
Aside from Thomas McGee's, because that's a perfect pour where's the other.
Jamie: 3:55
Perfect pour at the Buffalo Wild Wings. There it is.
August: 4:00
That's corporate training for you. It is.
Jamie: 4:03
It really is. There's a place Gus's Snug we're going to go to.
August: 4:07
Dude, I just went there for the first time over the weekend. Crazy great it was. We had that little weird little room in the back. We have a giant TV that you have to like literally look up into. It's like right in your head.
Jamie: 4:19
Where is this at? We're doing an episode there.
August: 4:21
I'm not banned.
Jamie: 4:23
I'm not, I'm allowed.
August: 4:24
That was the last thing I licensed before I left the city, that's not Weiss. That's not Weiss, but we didn't go into Weiss for last call. The hollow Weiss was insane. All of the cocktails there are great.
Jamie: 4:36
So good. So we did an episode about Weiss distilling. You can go back and check that one out too.
August: 4:40
Twizzler infused vodka right now.
Jamie: 4:42
That sounds amazingly amazing.
August: 4:46
They just ground up a bunch of Twizzlers, soaked it in a bottle, in a bunch of vodka. For how?
Jamie: 4:52
long Uh-oh.
DJ Tom T: 4:52
Uh-oh Stuff like.
August: 4:53

DJ Tom T: 5:01
What I said was stuff like that is why the other countries hate us.
August: 5:04
Is it coming through? Yeah, what I said was stuff like that is why the other countries hate, us.
Jamie: 5:06
He knows how to plug in a mic. He does. He's a professional DJ. He is a professional DJ.
DJ Tom T: 5:12
I also play one on.
August: 5:12

DJ Tom T: 5:27

Jamie: 6:27
You actually got a couple of these wrong on purpose, right, you've seen my browser history.
DJ Tom T: 6:30
Okay, all right, maybe I should get a couple of these wrong on purpose.
Jamie: 6:32
Go on All right. Porn star. Coffee flavor, honey passion.
DJ Tom T: 6:37
I'm going to go coffee on that one.
Jamie: 6:39
Ah, you're porn star. That has to be a porn star. That is a porn star. That is it, unless you're a moron.
August: 6:57
Stormy daniels should be both now three for yeah that's a marketing opportunity.
DJ Tom T: 7:04
Yeah, how about how, about long mint, long mint I'm gonna go with the the way I did my SATs and say this one's a coffee.

Jamie: 7:44
There you go.
August: 7:46
That's the game show. I played odds on that.
Jamie: 7:50
Tom, you had no idea we were doing that did you?
August: 7:52
No, I was out of nowhere. What does he win?
Jamie: 7:57
The ability to be on our podcast. Well, there you go.
August: 8:00
All right Sorry about that so we're going to start up with the obligatory question that we always ask of our first guests.
Jamie: 8:09
Tom, tell me about your childhood.
DJ Tom T: 8:11
It was pretty damn good. I grew up in Toronto so I had a great time.
Jamie: 8:15
I had a lot of fun there. I love toronto. Yeah, me too. Let's talk about me a little bit more. I would. I would go to toronto to see we take the train. No, I'm gonna talk about me. Uh, we take the train. I did this in the first one. I it's like we would go to see the kids in the hall and they would like they was. Uh, oh, my, oh, my God. I would love it. We would get tickets and we'd go see kids in the hall. Like you know, the kids in the hall, that's really cool.
DJ Tom T: 8:39
I mean, I'm old Before we came on we were talking about Saturday night live and some other stuff and kids in the hall, a lot of those people that were in the Toronto kids in. I had two or three of them, yeah, and Game of Second City, Yep, yep and various other.
Jamie: 8:53
Oh my God.
DJ Tom T: 8:53
It was great.
Jamie: 8:54
But Shadowy Men on the Shadowy Planet. The bleachers, the seats for the guests, were just like these crazy wooden bleachers, and there's a scaffolding and there's this wood platform and the Shadowy Men on the Shadowy Planet a little three-piece.
August: 9:12
They're up on this wooden platform playing in between skits.
Jamie: 9:14
We've lost every listener. Now. My favorite thing about Toronto I love Toronto. Anyway, Tom, I didn't know you're from Toronto. How'd you get over here? Are you here?
DJ Tom T: 9:22
legally. Yeah, my dad's job moved and I ended up. Actually, is INS going to come here?
Jamie: 9:28
Urban Chris got deported. He was Canadian. Rest in peace. Yes, that was my dude man. I love Chris. Yeah, that was my dude.
DJ Tom T: 9:36
I know I came over here. My dad's job moved. Bill Clinton signed the NAFTA free trade agreement. I'm aging myself now, but my dad's job moved as a result and we came here. So I did my last year of high school at West Bloomfield High. I graduated.
Jamie: 9:49
Oh, nice and.
DJ Tom T: 9:49
Michigan State University.
Jamie: 9:51
Okay, this gentleman over here. That's where things all went to Hades in a handbasket.
August: 9:55
Who's going to tell the story you?
Jamie: 9:57
go ahead. Wait, wait, wait, go green. All right, go white. Yeah, there you go, Fair enough.
August: 10:02
This guy gets DJ Tom T. He's a college entrepreneur right, starts his own business in college. Yeah, shows up to DJ the Kiva at McDonald Hall, which is where I was living, and I wandered down and I was just like a I'm sorry, matt, what would you like to end up Going into Kiva Hall? Musically? You're like I'm going to play X, y and Z, but what was X, y and Z? Well, I mean, you know at that time, you know it was college kids and so was pop music but at jam with tom the thing.
DJ Tom T: 10:37
Yeah, yeah, you know my age is the subject of some debate and we'll leave it there. So, um, at that time that was the pop music. The problem is I'm doing this gig for the school and I my only thing is I cannot play cuss words, right, so I got to play clean versions of all these things, bo, which is totally fine because I had access to a lot of that stuff.
August: 10:57
Actually, 90s dance was not dirty and the rap dance wasn't really a thing. It wasn't dirty in the connotation.
DJ Tom T: 11:04
It wasn't.
August: 11:06
But you can figure this, the fuck out.
DJ Tom T: 11:09
Let me back up. It wasn't raunchy, it was dirty. It wasn't raunchy For every 2 Live crew. There was a biggie For every NWA there was a Wu-Tang Clan.
August: 11:21
There was also Power, which was earlier. Yeah, but I mean you can't.
DJ Tom T: 11:26
It was a lot more diverse back then. A lot more diverse music.
August: 11:29
I woke up to this guy. I don't know. I'm like, uh, hey, can you play? Uh, how do you want it?
DJ Tom T: 11:35
bye and unfortunately I did not, anyone did not 30 shit right.
August: 11:40
And he's like no, I can't. I'm like well, I got the super maxi single with the. Uh, you know radio version on cd. Bring it down. Yeah, I'm gonna go get out the room. Brought down my folder of the of cd.
Jamie: 11:56
Oh, yeah, yeah that was the room dj you know and brought it down and like played it.
August: 12:03
This rule is up on floor three and so this is before. Anyway, well, I'm gonna say I'm gonna leave that part out. He says hey look, I'm djing at this club next weekend. Uh, you know, bring this boulder over there, we can have some fun with this. We're going to be doing it at this bar like cool. So that saturday that next week comes up and he calls me in my dorm room and goes hey place, I'll go and dj. I just got shut down. They've been serving underage kids. That's why we were going there.
August: 12:32
We just got shut down, Okay cool, but we kept in touch. And then this is absolutely true Right after college I got Tom into a fantasy football league.
DJ Tom T: 12:45
Yes, of all the things that keep us together.
August: 12:49
Fantasy football, and we're talking a couple decades into this. Yeah, it's a minute.
DJ Tom T: 12:54
So to this day, we're in the same fantasy football league.
August: 12:56
To this day as we speak, I actually just beat him last week.
August: 13:01
Yeah, well, that's because I made a mistake. I played Jaden Daniels. I have Lamar Jackson. Jaden Daniels was hot but he ended up scoring seven. I would have had you. I would have had, you Could have, should have coulda, shoulda, woulda, but also tom is. But let's, we're getting away from the point that tom is a world-class dj who's traveled the country, traveled the world, and he's done so much for so many local charities, as well as these two gentlemen. They've always dj'd all my charity parties in ham tramic. We've raised together thousands of dollars for the hero foundation, for House. We just keep, and you never turned down a charity gig.
DJ Tom T: 13:38
No.
August: 13:38
I flew back.
DJ Tom T: 13:40
Yeah, you flew back. You really got off a plane from.
August: 13:42
Montreal Yep. And one time it was from Dubai for a Ferrari party Yep. And you got off the plane and came right to Whiskey in the Jar, with no sleep, to a dive bar in Hamtramck just to DJ my charity party. So, tom sleep to a dive bar in hamtramck just to dj my charity party. So tom has been on it. He's been on it for years and like, look, he did my my now ex-girlfriend's 40th birthday party in the backyard during covid. I was there, you were there. Well, we're all.
Jamie: 14:04
I saw you, tom.
August: 14:05
There's a very limited limited population for that party, but it was outdoors and, uh, we had a good time with it. It was fun as as famous and as good. Tell me about some of the stuff you've remixed, some of the work that you put out there.
DJ Tom T: 14:19
I mean, I did stuff for a lot of different bands Bastille, the Killers a lot of different things I've done. I did a lot of work on, and to this day continue to do, a lot of work on, movie soundtracks, stuff like that and like that, and there's a lot of different uh like commercial beds, just a lot of different miscellaneous music projects, here and there, voiceovers you got.
Jamie: 14:36
You got some nice pipes yeah, thanks, I appreciate that. That's the the three whiskeys in the cigar.
DJ Tom T: 14:42
That's a cigar, by the way this is a shout out to stx.
August: 14:45
This is six is amazing, beautiful situation I like this uh, yeah, he's gonna bring this, bring some of his gigs, yeah, actually, yeah.
DJ Tom T: 14:56
This would work pretty nice yeah.
August: 14:58
Oh yeah.
DJ Tom T: 15:01
No, this is a really nice setup.
August: 15:04
They do good work. They do good work, and so then I lost my train of thought. God damn it.
Jamie: 15:10
Where were we going?
August: 15:12
I was going towards the stuff that he's done and where he's been and talking about time. Oh, let's talk about your Throwback Thursdays.
DJ Tom T: 15:19
Yeah, so I started this thing on social media a long time ago, and so it's called Throwback Thursday Jam of the Day, and I'll just pick a song you know, literally out of random, Because when you say throwback I mean I have 50 plus years of music to choose from. A lot of times it's just something that I've heard during the week in my life. You know, just random things that affect people. But it really took off. A lot of people pay attention to it. It's actually a lot of fun. I have fun with it. It's pretty cool.
August: 15:45
Yes, Tracy Thorne was today Kind of a very underground hit that you don't know who sang it, but then when you hear it, you know the song. Oh my god, I remember that. And how do?
DJ Tom T: 15:57
you play genesis. That, how do you play it? Play it loud.
August: 15:59
Play it loud play it loud, always play it loud, always like that. So, uh, you, uh, are you have any residencies right now? You've been bouncing around a little right now right now.
DJ Tom T: 16:08
So since covid the dj market has been a little weird. So I'm not technically a resident anywhere, I do a monthly at TV. I am in and out of Boogie Fever once in a while.
August: 16:17
Dude, you haven't seen your post at Boogie Fever been lit.
DJ Tom T: 16:20
Yeah, that place is crazy man which is great because for me it's fun Because again now it goes back to, I get to pick from 50 years of music. I like the nightlife I like on the disco run. Absolutely that song.
August: 16:31
Absolutely. It makes me cringe. I like the phrase Well, I you know I get.
DJ Tom T: 16:34
I get to pick from 50 years of music.
Jamie: 16:35
So like it's a blank canvas.
DJ Tom T: 16:37
So it's so much fun for me because I can just I can go anywhere with it. When we stopped at Lumen, yeah. Like so.
August: 16:48
I'm a little bit there site I'm going to do a little self-promotion here, djtomtcom.

August: 17:11
Technics 1200 was always his Fantasy football team name.
DJ Tom T: 17:13
Yes, oh nice. Well, now it's Natural juices and berries, but yeah, for obvious reasons.
August: 17:19
Wow he's. He is also an entrepreneur Of many Stuff and things. Yes, hands in many things. There's so much talent Going on in this room. Oh my gosh, I am the least talented Person in this room, which is always the truth. You should speak highly of yourself. He is.
DJ Tom T: 17:35
I am.
August: 17:39
I should say more highly I'm amongst friends.
Jamie: 17:43
What you got there, James More games.
DJ Tom T: 17:45

Jamie: 17:49

Happy anniversary, Paul and his wife With a proper smoking jacket on.
August: 19:54

Jamie: 20:05
He was, he was he was saying no, I cannot attend. And his life. His wife was like I gotta pick up the kids and I got crap to do, so you should probably go hang out with those boys. And he's like really, it's like it's almost a hall pass.
